Help me with my bland hallway- ideas needed

Desperately in need of help. No idea where to start. I have oak doors and beige tiles throughout the hallway which I'd like to keep if possible. I have looked into buying black doors, but not sure if that will suit. The white walls make my house look clinical. i want a warm inviting hallway, not grey though. I've been looking at paneling the bottom half and that looks good. I have no idea which apps to use, but I'm sure we have some creative ladies on here that can help me. here are pics of my current hallway

leave the doors alone. They are lovely. What you need is to soften the effect. It would be nice to have different flooring (wooden) but if that’s not an option you definitely need rugs. A lovely bright runner. I would also say a woven bench (ie a wooden bench with woven top). Some beautiful framed art posters on the wall. Just bring in colour and softness.

verycloakanddaggers · 29/10/2025 17:40

The easiest way is just some nice warm paint. Don't bother with the wall that goes up the stairs. If it's the wrong colour paint over it. Plus a rug. Plus a couple of prints, pick something a little personal like a nice print of your home town, not something generic from a furniture shop.

TMMC1 · 29/10/2025 17:43

Change the plant pot thing in the window to a green olant. Add some pictures in matching frames, wood to match the doors or black to pick up the decor. Add a runner with a bold pattern. Change the silver mirror to a black frame.

My most expensive suggestion is to upgrade your front door to a lovely heavy oak to match the internal doors. That’s the biggest 😬 to my eyes looking at the photos. It cheapens the look.

UpToonGirl · 29/10/2025 17:46

I agree with all @siucra ideas. I'd go for a nice warm taupe colour. I would definitely paint the inside of the front door. I do think changing the floor would make the biggest difference but obviously ££.

I wouldn't change the oak doors unless they look more orangey in person but I would stain them rather than paint. You could change the handles though, brushed bronze would go nicely with a warmer wall colour. Also maybe some wall lights or a lamp so you don't always have to use the spotlights?

bowlybowl · 29/10/2025 17:50

Don't add more black & I would not add paneling.

Definitely some rugs & agree with the pp that the front door looks a bit out of place.

Do you use the two lamps on the table?

Iclyn · 29/10/2025 17:52

Decide on the design of furniture , and get it all matching . Paint the walls in a warm colour and hide your shoe mountain ! 😂 😂
I have hall envy .

NancyJoan · 29/10/2025 17:54

A blind at the window, a nice runner rug on the floor and a larger rug where the hall gets wider.
Black doors would be HORRIBLE. Your doors are a nice warm colour, leave them as they are, and add a warm colour to the walls if you want to paint. Keep it light though. Maybe something like this:

mumof5andfat · 29/10/2025 18:00

Thank you for the responses so far, very helpful. I might not go for paneling, as trends change so fast and should i come to sell one day, future buyers may be put off thinking I'm hiding damp issues., so thank you for the advice on just going with a warm paint palette. I'm looking to recarpeting the stairs, what would suit? the front door needs replacing too. what to go for? pictures would really help as I really am completely at a loss (no creativity at all).

I would move the orchard from the tall boy and put a picture or something up on the wall behind.

Orchid onto the console table, get a different mirror and put it behind the table.

Put some prints on the wall

bowlybowl · 29/10/2025 18:03

i didn't see the other photos. Yes to blind at window.

bowlybowl · 29/10/2025 18:03

why not put the console near the window

i did actually have a console under the window, but recently moved it as I am having a loft conversion starting in the next few days, so took down the blinds and have tried to clear the hallway as i know a lot of dust will be created whilst the builders are here.

Download the Dulux App and play around with wall colour. I really like it but a large plant and a runner would add layers to it

no, the lamps are never used. its because i have no socket on that side of the hallway on that particular part of the wall lol. So that is one thing i want to ask the builders to do for me when they get a chance from doing the loft

I think it looks like two separate styles, I like the black section although the top of the sideboard is a little cluttered. I’d move the black mirror to where the grey arched mirror is, where the black mirror used to be I’d have some artwork.

bowlybowl · 29/10/2025 18:14

@mumof5andfat That makes more sense as you tend to dump stuff near the front door.

I wouldn't bother with the lamps tbh but maybe put an actual light in the hall rather than spotlights. You could have two, one nearer the front door & one further down with separate light switches so you can turn one off. Lighting contributes a lot to warmth.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/10/2025 18:32

Nothing wrong with the stair carpet, it's warm and goes well with the wood.

You need a large storage bench to sit on to put shoes on (and dump them all in when you don't want everybody to see a great heap of crap by the front door). You could put a rug underneath it to create a bit of colour, softness and warmth underfoot, something with a touch of red/pink would go well, which could also be picked up in a large picture with reds/pinks/greens.

Green would soften whilst going well with the wood (and the black stuff). Plants - big, leafy, green ones like a large Aspidistra. You could bring in a bronze textured pot cover to add more warmth.

The only thing I would say is avoid more monochrome and whilst it's a lovely colour in other circumstances, anything blue/aqua/watery coloured with those doors, walls and tiles would carry the danger of making people tend to turn right for the hygienist's room.

connectingthedots · 29/10/2025 21:55

I think a carpet or wood/laminate with a rug will really help as the current floor makes the space looks quite cold.
Agreed with warm paint or maybe even wallpaper.

I don't think the black desk is helping. I find Instagram is really good for inspiration you could search for #hallway or similar.

I've asked Chat GPT to give me a Sage green look. too dark? what colour rug should i go for? i think wall lights would be needed to give it a more warm and cosy feel, can anyone suggest what type of lights could suit the space. I regret the LED lights, they're truly awful and cold. I might get an electrician in to put me in a hanging light. any recommendations would be welcome

That sage green looks a million times better already. I’d change the floor to wood if you could, and the front door to something better, and put a kilim runner on the floor. Replace the mirror lamp with something in wood. I’d take off the stair carpet , paint the stairs, and put on a runner instead. If you want to change the lighting, I’d have several pendants, depending on the length of the hall.

Edited

the floor would cost too much at this stage, especially with all the rest of the building work going on, so maybe I could do something with the right rug/runner. I agree a wooden lamp would look great. I've never thought of having the stairs painted an a runner, I should look up a few images to see what would suit. Thank you!

Look up Roger Oates runners. I have Inchyra blue stairs and one of the colourful RO runners.

KnickerlessParsons · 29/10/2025 23:24

Some nice warm coloured rugs and art on the wall will do the trick, and possibly a warmer colour carpet on the stairs.
your black and silver furniture and Knick knacks aren’t helping much either.

Ia there enough daylight for a couple of plants?

Calliopespa · 29/10/2025 23:32

Using the lamps will soften the look enormously at night (if you turn off the overhead lighting).

That plus a runner and, (I'm sorry because it's expensive, changing your front door to echo the nicer oak ones as a pp suggested), would do the trick I reckon.

I think there is a slight conflict going on between your black/ silver monochrome look and the wood doors. To me the doors call for warmth and the furniture and accessories are wanting to take it in a cooler palette/shade direction.

Namechangerage · 29/10/2025 23:35

I think the tiling is really strange for a hallway etc. it’s like a bathroom tile. A warm wood be so much better. I know you said that’s not an option but it’s what is needed. But changing the wall colour would help too, I like the green.
