This follows on from a previous thread I had but can’t be bothered to change user name back. Immmaking my small single into a spare single which my DC will use when back from
uni. It’s tiny so thinking just lovely rug, lovely bedding and maybe dark colours to make it feel nice and cosy and a fabulous lamp and textiles. Show me yours if you don’t mind. Or any lovely pins you know of if working on your own little teeny room? Thank you 🙏

Pollypolspol · 12/10/2025 21:51

It’s like this. (Floor plan stolen from previous Rightmove listing I used for carpet sizes !)

So when you incorporate the door way, this is barely 4ft x 4ft.

How long was this your daughter’s bedroom? Did she study for her GCSEs and a levels in there?

3packspls · 13/10/2025 06:36

Minimum square footage of sleeping area for a person over 10 in HMO set by the gov is 70 sq ft

this is 40 square foot

You are sounding very judgmental. Not everyone has the luxury of space, or the option to move to get more space.

She’s just asking for design recommendations. Why are you asking if her daughter studied for GCSEs in that room? Are you going to call social services?

Mehmeh22 · 13/10/2025 06:47

Jeez just give inspiration...she doesnt need the third degree!

No, it's bigger, judging by where the measurement arrows sit on the floorplan. The area inside the door is additional, and the door opens outward, which helps. And this isn't an HMO but a family home: the occupant of that small room has access to the whole house, not just their own room, so size isn't the same issue.

FenceBooksCycle · 13/10/2025 07:31

You could put a toddler in a cot, or an under-6yo in a cotbed in there as it is, but not a single bed. The 6'9" dimension incorporates the doorway so the bed would have to go along the 6'0" wall which is only 182cm, and a single bed is 190cm uk size (though if the room is for a teen a 200cm euro size is better)

Do I understand correctly that the corner cupboard starts at about waist height and the lower half is bulkhead over the stairs? In which case I would take out the cupboard and build a platform above the bulkhead. The under-bed space that isn't bulkhead can be filled with storage space (if the child is young they may like it to be half storage and half beanbag reading nook). Then book case (from just above the mattress height up to the ceiling) at the foot of the bed and wardrobe on the wall facing the doorway and leave the rest of the floor clear. It's easy to buy a sprung slatted bed base without legs to incorporate into a self-built design like this

I woukd use ikea-style white furnitureboard because the light colour helps with rooms that will otherwise seem pokey. When making custom-built furniture for projects like this it is possible to buy ikea cupboard doors without buying a whole furniture unit.

I won't share a photo of mine as it would be too uniquely identifying, sorry, but I know it's feasible.

This is my 16yo room. Not quite finished in this photo though. End of bed touches wall and photo taken from doorway.

Fair enough
apologies op

Pollypolspol · 13/10/2025 12:34

For size idea, it fits a single across the window which almost both ends of the room plus a small desk next to the bed which goes up to where the bulkhead is. That’s it. There’s floor space but no other usable place to put furniture

Where is clothes storage?

Pollypolspol · 13/10/2025 19:20

I’m leaving the thread. The size of the room is common to all the houses on my street. Does not need outrage about the space afforded , does not need concern for my child’s welfare. This is Mumsnet at its worst when people blunder in and start telling someone in a perfectly decent semi detached in what’s considered a nice area that they’re essentially having their child live in neglect. Well from me - go judge someone else.

My cosy box room - 7 x 5 feet. There is a tiny wardrobe too but it is being painted.

Really, @Pollypolspol ? One solitary poster raised issues about the appropriateness of the room as an adult bedroom, based on a misreading of the floor plan And when the mistake was pointed out, that pp apologised to you. Nobody else has been hostile at all, and the have been some fun & affirming suggestions. Is this really MN at its worst? It isn't even the worst thread I've seen this evening!

Polly this is a great thread, really useful to give people ideas of what to do with their box rooms. Please don't leave.

Our box room from either end. Had a custom wardrobe built over the bulkhead. I'm really pleased with it. Cosy and fits in everything needed for a bedroom really!

My neighbour has the box room for her daughter and bought a baby wardrobe to fit on the box stand. Genius idea. Second hand on FB. My house is such a strange shape, the box is in the master bedroom but right at the door. Like an obstruction, I hate it. But thankfully it means my smaller bedroom is tiny but it's missing the box so I have more floor space to play with! Love the pictures on this thread, so many cool ideas. Our small room is still a nursery but eventually will need to accommodate a growing boy haha. I went light and airy but I love the look of the darker colours!! Photo taken at the window next to the door on the 0.5 zoomed out camera thing ha

I think building over the bulkhead is the best idea. Depending how high the blocked part is, building a bed over the platform will give a greater length for a bed and the rest of the space for storage. Alternatively build a wardrobe over the bulkhead. We had high ceilings so put a platform bed (maybe 5ft high) in smallest bedroom, across the window. Enough height underneath for a usable desk and chest of drawers.

That’s cute.,, but where do you keep your clothes?

ItWasntMyFault · 14/10/2025 07:55

My DS used to have a room that size until his late teens. He had a single bed on the 6’ wall - it was a divan as there was no room for a headboard or bedframe etc and he had a large chest of drawers that all his clothes went in. There were hooks on the back of the door for the few things that had to be hung up.
It wasn’t great, but he managed.

JustAloeVera · 14/10/2025 09:52

We’ve recently moved and one of my dds now has a box room with stair bulkhead. It’s a little bigger than OPs at about 2.3m x 2.3m.

We’ve extended the back half of the bulkhead top to create a desk/bedside table and put an Ikea Smastad wardrobe and Billy bookcase (slightly cut down) on top of the bulkhead. Her bed fits under the window and we need to get her some under bed storage.

The door opens outwards too which gives her some extra space. She wanted white walls but it is a very cosy little space and doesn’t feel too small.

Richtea67 · 14/10/2025 14:06

My youngest dd's room is approx 2mx2m. We had the radiator moved so her bed can go across the wall under the window. She's in a cot bed currently, but will soon upgrade to a single with storage underneath. We plan to fit a floating shelf as a bedside table. She has a large chest of drawers for clothes, and hooks on the door. We're also thinking of getting a sliding door fitted. Luckily we have lots of storage in the landing outside her room....that houses toys, bedding etc. I think it's a really cosy space, and we'll have to make it work for a few more years.
