How much would you expect to pay for this Welsh dresser?

It’s from an antiques shop. It’s 200cm wide x 220cm high. That’s all the info I have atm. (I also know the asking price which seems a lot to me but possibly still worth it). What sort of
££ would make you not fall off your chair?

@Minecroft

British heart foundation is a decent source for this type of furniture, many of their furniture stores in Scotland too.

I think that's good for £800. Check the drawers as someone suggested and see if the wood for the top but is the same as the wood for the bottom bit. They might not have originally been together.

3luckystars · 13/08/2025 16:25

I would expect about £2000 but know nothing about furniture.

My main priority would be that it doesn’t have woodworm or bedbugs.

Geneticsbunny · 13/08/2025 16:25

The drawers look like they could be burr walnut and I would guess victoria or Georgian and probably from a poshish house as victorian ones tend to be pine.

You need to look on Facebook/charity shops.
Antque shops add zeros

I'd expect £1k, it looks like good wood and condition, but there are many around, they aren't in fashion, and not so many people have the space for them now.

mumonthehill · 13/08/2025 16:54

Honestly FB marketplace. I got a huge one that was beautiful for £50. Ended up giving it away when we moved as it was so big. Auction houses will always be premium.

Oceangrey · 13/08/2025 16:54

Huh, just seen you gave the price so I wasn't too far off!
It's a big statement piece so if it's what you want and you can afford it then I'd make them a sensible offer.

ThatNattyPlayer · 13/08/2025 16:57

my grandparents had one and my mother, couldn’t sell either after weeks of trying, had to give them away in the end.

LibertyLily · 13/08/2025 17:09

It's nice @Minecroft but I actually much prefer the one on marketplace that @Brenda34 posted.

The Old Charm ones can't be compared (and remind me in a bad way of my parents/grandparents who had loads of the stuff, along with Stag bedroom furniture which I also dislike) as theyre not 'proper' antiques.

I second (or third!) the idea of searching local auction houses, via an online platform such as The Saleroom or Easy Live Auctions. We recently relocated back to England from rural Wales and both there and here I've found lots of great stuff for much less than my usual first port of call (ebay) or antique/fleamarkets.

A couple of months back we bought an original Georgian (George 3rd) bookcase that I wanted for china display/storage in our dining room via The Saleroom. I'd seen similar ones on Ebay for anything between £900-2000, so was delighted to get it for £275 plus fees. We had to get it delivered (we use Shiply or AnyVan) but this only added a further £150 to the overall cost, so it was still a bargain imo.

They’re usually cheap as they are too big for most modern homes.
