How much would you expect to pay for this Welsh dresser?

It’s from an antiques shop. It’s 200cm wide x 220cm high. That’s all the info I have atm. (I also know the asking price which seems a lot to me but possibly still worth it). What sort of
££ would make you not fall off your chair?

I’m not expert enough to know about the wood colour difference but it’s a good size and looks to be in good condition. I’d say £1,800 to £2,400.

Minecroft · 12/08/2025 22:45

Thank you for pointing out the difference in wood colour. I’ll ask about this. I had thought it might be the lighting …

there are very few people buying furniture this size - so I see a lot of beautiful dressers ridiculously cheap. We have a great charity furniture shop near me which often has them

caringcarer · 12/08/2025 22:52

Can't see from photo if hard wood or soft. If hard wood in good condition £300-500. If softwood in good condition £300. These large brown wood items are too big for most houses and brown wood out of vogue so the price goes down. Many people buy them to sand down and paint.

Wateringinaheatwave · 12/08/2025 22:56

look at how the drawers are jointed (this tells you about age) - and also those handles look odd to me…

That should set your spidey senses tingling. If it was made by A Name, was very old or covetable in some way then they would make darned sure that you were told. The absence of info is a bit worrying.

I get lots of furniture on eBay. Here’s similar for £289. Ive a pine dresser I got for £200.

WELSH DRESSER Old Charm Classic Oak Glass Leaded Doors Shelves 3 Drawer Cupboard | eBay UK

The top section features a classic open display shelf flanked by two glass leaded-door cupboards—perfect for showing off ceramics, glassware, or heirlooms. There are a few very minor age-related scratches (see photos), but they’re barely noticeable and...

Thank you all. It’s on for £800. I live in rural Scotland and have struggled so much to find something nearby that is Georgian / brown / large enough for the ceiling height etc. (I am another one that also loves big brown furniture). When I see things online that might do, I then realise it will cost 00s to have it transported. (Not something I can pick up in the car). Have thought about getting a pine thing and painting but had really hoped to keep it brown.

Anyway, I’m pretty sick of searching and had this been £4-500 I’d just get on a buy it. But £800 does warrant a lot more thought.

I am intrigued about the sort of wood and why the middle section/drawers are paler. I am not at all an expert (probably v obvious) but can’t think of any logical explanation! There are areas just above the middle drawers that are paler but seem to be continuous with darker areas. 🤷‍♀️

Good point. They ought to be dovetailed.

Minecroft · 12/08/2025 23:25

I’m actually watching this item on eBay already 🔮 I love it! It would cost me £500ish inc transportation though. This is part of the issue! I live far away from everything!

I don't think that you can compare that dresser with a 1970s Old Charm. You might be able to negotiate the price I wonder if the variation in colour is bleaching. Could get you some leverage.

That looks rather fussy for a Georgian dresser? Would have said early/mid-Victorian. Again, not my expertise (art deco, so considerably later) but we do have several Georgian pieces, pot stands, architect’s desk, writing desk etc, which we admire for their clean lines.
The dresser just looks rather frilly.

It's not necessarily a flaw, you just have to know whether it's all original or if any of it was restored because that affects the value.

justasking111 · 13/08/2025 01:19

Friend bought a gorgeous one from a tea room when it closed down. It's huge, cost £400

Silverbirchleaf · 13/08/2025 01:30

@Hellohelga Has beaten me to it. Look for ‘Old Charm’ furniture. Brand new, it’s really expensive, but second hand it’s more reasonable, as ‘brown wood’ isn’t so in fashion. I love it though.

Ohthatsabitshit · 13/08/2025 01:38

I think the drawers in the middle are often added later and there used to be a recess there.

Lavenderandbrown · 13/08/2025 01:49

Make an offer. I do agree it’s a bit niche so the seller may be open to offers or just watch it for awhile. Every expensive item I have bought at antique store has been worth it.
and based on the USA Ballards catalog and southern living magazine brown is being courted again in home decor

KimHwn · 13/08/2025 07:38

Old Charm is very very different to the dresser in the OP imo...

SarahAndQuack · 13/08/2025 15:26

I don't hate Old Charm at all, but I agree a 50s/70s piece of furniture isn't the same sort of thing as what's in the OP's photo.
