When watching the soaps ... l always wonder why loads of the houses haven't been decorated for years.. ( yes l know it's soaps and not real life) but even so .. you would think they would change things around..
Some of the houses are very modern and some haven't changed for 20 plus years.
On average l change mine every three years.. especially living room .. my bedroom and dining room.
New colours... add new pictures .. curtains/ cushions/ throws/ bedding etc.
Rugs/ plants etc.

Never. We will give the walls a lick of paint if they need to once in a while but that's it.

PermanentTemporary · 25/05/2025 18:06

One of the reasons I moved into this house was that I absolutely loved the decoration. I'm not quite as dumb as that sounds, it's a wonderful house in the perfect location, but the previous owner was an interior designer and I loved the way she'd done it, particularly the paint colours.

There's been quite a lot of structural stuff to do (insulation, replacing doors so warped they didn't shut, getting dangerous sockets sorted, installing more than one socket per bedroom etc etc) and I have sometimes wondered why she didn't do more of that. But it's still a pleasure to look at every day.

We bought a sofa because we needed more places to sit, and I expect it to see me out. I paid a truly enormous amount for an antique rug and will never change that either. My main cushion was a present 20 years ago.

Everygrain · 25/05/2025 18:08

If you want to change rugs, cushions and stuff like that it shows you didn't take enough care to buy something you really lied

treetopsgreen · 25/05/2025 18:18

I change the decor when I buy something I see it can be once a week sometimes it depends on inspiration

Do you mean repainting & changing furniture once a week or adding a cushion each week?!

teksquad · 25/05/2025 18:32

wow, ive literally just repaired a cushion cover i bought in 2004 😀

Im starting to redecorate and replace now as things wesr out but i like the things i buy so am happy to keep them around.

TheMumEdit · 25/05/2025 18:36

Just decorated my living room after 5 years. It was a botch job last time and I don’t know how I coped so long! Sofa is 10
years old but had 3 kids in that time so it’s well done.

Kids rooms are in process which includes paint and new furniture. Been 8 years since they’re been done.

I tend to stick with neutral walls and occasionally change small decor bits. I couldn’t afford to change paint etc. Not only is it expensive I’m exhausted thinking about it.

TheOpalReader · 25/05/2025 19:00

Only when things start looking tatty, I've not long redecorated the living room after about 6 years (paper peeling and a couple of scuffs on walls etc). One of the bedrooms has just had a full makeover after about 20 years. The hallway will be next due to emergency magnolia painting after some building work a few years ago but I've taken my time to find a colour I like so that will be next, along with some coat hooks and a new doormat. My SIL does it every spring, top to bottom, walls, flooring etc and it's always a variation of the latest trends.

FusionChefGeoff · 25/05/2025 19:02

We do ‘maintenance’ decoration - I love classic / traditional looks so they don’t really go out of fashion and we just tart up if things look shabby. So kitchen more often than eg living room. Kids rooms maybe change them every 5 yrs or so.

Cynic17 · 25/05/2025 19:04

When we can no longer put it off. Just the faff of organising it all ...... If ever I feel like decorating, I usually deal with it by spending the money on a holiday instead 😂

Gundogday · 25/05/2025 13:28

Change every three years! Do you keep core pieces such as sofas and furniture or does that get changed as well?

Yes l keep the sofa and bed and dining table / TV unit etc .
They all go with almost anything.
But l love changing things around for a change...
I guess because my Dad was a decorator and my Mum had him going round and round.. l got it from him.
He taught me how to.
I love decorations.. and it doesn't have to cost a lot.
I get my paint from Seaguls rescue... recycled paint.. do doesn't go to landfill.
I can wallpaper too .
I have a sewing room so can make cushions/ curtains.. or alter curtains.
I love upcycling.

We've been here nearly 8 years the first two were a massive renovation job so I'd say most of the decor is 6 years old, we've had the kitchen done this year complete refit back to plaster and bathroom 3 years ago because we unexpectedly had ds6 years ago and the most expensive reno jobs had to go on the back burner, we've just started saying some of the paintwork needs freshening up, especially the hallway, but the other rooms seem like so much hassle moving heavy furniture and we have 10 ft ceilings...

HereComesAnUnpopularPoster · 25/05/2025 21:39

OP I would consider once every three years a lot.

We’ve never stayed anymore for that long. Our longest was ten years and we decorated when we moved in and then just before we put it on the market to sell 10years later. Not a complete redecoration though just a freshen up where necessary.

We don’t lay carpet anywhere so have rugs instead. We have kept the same ones since we bought them in turkey in 1998 and they will move with us on our next move.
Generally we only buy new if something breaks.
Most of our things are very old ( antiques) so have been made well to last.

The only thing we buy and switch about a bit is artwork.

TheMumEdit · 26/05/2025 08:51

If I could do it myself it would be more often. I’m shelling out £500 for 2 small rooms so not feasible to do it regularly

NewShoesForSpring · 26/05/2025 10:12

We restored an old farmhouse 20 years ago & we've repainted several times in those years. Mostly repainting the same colours as we have 99% Farrow & Ball paint.

We have changed colours in a couple of rooms.

We have the same core furniture since then too, sofas, table chairs etc though we've added more as we've progressed

We buy good stuff & have lots of antiques mixed with contemporary pieces

Dc's room has had several changes as they've grown from newborn to adult here

We're currently repainting our stairs & redecorating the utility room which has never really been done properly

Our bedroom is next on the list

Ultimately we need new windows though so saving for them now

Dh has a relative who redecorated her house annually & always in the latest trends & colours. She changes furniture & curtains & rugs & cushions etc its exhausting & also dates really quickly as it's so trendy. Her house looks like a next catalogue as she buys the ornaments etc to colour match. I'd say nothing in her house is older than 3 years

It's my idea of a nightmare!

ExtensiveDebating · 26/05/2025 13:04

Our adult DCs rooms haven't been re-decorated since before they were born Blush. One was pale yellow emulsion, one cream and they've been happy to keep them that way. We have changed curtains, rugs, pictures and bedding though.

monktasmic · 01/06/2025 00:27

I think our house is like the forth bridge. I decided last year I wanted to flip front sitting room with the dining room. Painted the walls in dining room in downpipe - hated it. Absolutely depressed me. Hated the setee - everything.
we’ve now moved back - the front sitting room is now painted in milky pail. My decorator is coming on Monday and painting the HSL and redecorating that with the strawberry thief (he arrives Monday, I’ve not picked colours for opposing wall, woodwork etc!)
bathrooms and kids bedrooms all been done in last couple of years.
the kitchen needs repainting (will be same colour) to freshen it up (also we’ve had a slight leak so the whole thing needs painting).
we’re having built in alcove wardrobes in our room - so that will need redoing. By that point I’ll need to address the fucking dining room in all its dark misery.
then… maybe just maybe … there will only be the office.
and then back to the beginning 😭

HeddaGarbled · 01/06/2025 00:45

You don’t have to change the curtains and rugs every time you do a repaint. Cushions, pictures, sure, it’s nice to have new things but curtains and rugs last longer than 3 years.

DoraDont · 03/06/2025 16:47

When it starts looking a bit tatty, maybe every five years or so. We have a Victorian place though, so there's always diy to be done, but I don't redecorate unnecessarily though, and avoid social media interiors trends like the plague.

I’ve used Downpipe but never on a whole room
Have you considered leaving the paint almost as a surround to lots of artwork. Photos. Or a huge hanging. So downpipe frames the pieces

As an aside you say
’my decorator is coming……and decorating that with the strawberry thief’…to that I’d say Lock up your strawberries 😋

Youagain2025 · 03/06/2025 17:33

I have only lived in my house for 3 years im still working on things. But I personally think I would just redecorate when I get bored of what I have

DiggyDoodad · 03/06/2025 17:50

My goodness! You redecorate and change the decor every three years? How exhausting! And so expensive. I couldn't justify the cost of constantly changing everything and wouldn't want the disruption.

I tend to think about redecorating every 10-15 years or so. We redecorated most of the interior in 2014, so it's just beginning to look a little tired and scuffed. I'm actually thinking of the possibility of paying someone to do the hallway and stairs, as I'm not keen on propping ladders up over the stairwell and clambering up on my own (and DH no longer able). But the rest of the house I can do myself, room by room. It's just a question of whether or not I can be bothered. Probably not! 😂

makingthecut · 03/06/2025 18:29

20 years in our house.
we’ve decorated the bedrooms and lounge twice.
Dining room once.
Kitchen twice including painting cupboards but it really needs ripping out.
Hallway 3 times, once because I realised bare white looked too stark.
The bathroom has been replaced. Mostly we just emulsion not paper so it’s easy to touch up or change the colour if needed.

Our furniture is neutral. Leather sofas and wood so no need to replace or change until they’re worn out/broken.

I’ve really liked a couple of bright coloured chairs and sofas that friends have had but always resisted them because I don’t want to be tied to a colour or changing perfectly good furniture. Ditto kitchen and bathroom suites. I love colour but the main things are kept neutral and adaptable.

I know people who decorate a lot and are constantly changing accessories and cushions etc and it’s such a waste. They buy cheap shit every year or so instead of gradually building up a nice collection of decent stuff because they get bored.

I think this makes my house sound dull but it really isn’t. 😄

Icecreamhelps · 03/06/2025 18:30

When I've got the time, energy and money so about every 10 years.

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 03/06/2025 18:32

Might repaint every 8-10 years. Not changing curtains or anything yet but we’ve only lived here 7 years. Wouldn’t get a new sofa or anything big for many years.
