Sofas that have stood the test of time - where to buy a decent sofa?

We bought two leather sofas around 4 years ago from Sofology and the seating has sagged badly. No surprise Sofology aren’t interested and say it’s normal wear and tear. We are looking to purchase new sofas but the big furniture companies like DFS, Furniture Village etc. all have terrible reviews and seem to have recurring issues of sagging or pooling fabric/leather after a short time. Can you give me your sofa brands that have stood the test of time? I am fed up of finding a sofa I like and then reading bad reviews. We don’t mind if it’s fabric or leather, although would prefer seat cushions that are not fixed and can be turned regularly. Thanks 😊

Leather sofa from Habitat still very comfortable after 25 years.

Natuzzi. The best sofa we have ever had

I’ve just looked at their website - gorgeous! 😍

Like a pp, Next. I know a few people with them and they look so much better after 10 years than most other brands. They also offer a much wider range of sizes and colours we found, than places like DFS.

John Lewis G Plan range. We have two sofas with matching armchairs, both are 13 years old this summer and look as good as new.

The G Plan vintage Seventy One from John Lewis was one of the sofas I liked, so this is good to hear. The only downside was them not having one in the showroom to try, so we would be taking a risk if we didn’t find it comfortable once it arrived.

Duresta or Tetrad

We are on year 12 of our SCS one and it’s just about ready for replacing but it’s seen us through a baby / toddler, two heavy adults, a dog that jumps on it daily and house move. We did pay extra for the memory foam in seat cushions but I will be definitely looking there for our next sofa.

I’ve got a 20 year old John Lewis sofa in a heavy duty jacquard type weave in green/gold/dark red that is still in really good shape. It’s sort of chesterfield shape so pretty much classic and timeless. Cost about £1200 but has been worth every penny. No plans to replace.

Edited to add we bought an Italian leather settee from House of Fraser at the same time and that’s still alive and kicking - although a bit sun damaged.

I dread the thought of having to replace these as I have the feeling that modern quality might not be quite the same.

Edited

I think this is the problem, the quality isn’t the same any more. We had a sofa from DFS prior to our current one, and we had it for 15 years. I think we have been let down badly with this sofa so we are being extra cautious. It’s such a lot of money to spend and you can’t usually return a sofa if you have issues with it.

Collins & Hayes.
Had one suite that lasted about 25 years. Could have had cushions re stuffed but had got bored with the colour.
Now have another that I picked up second hand on EBay for £200.

Delcor at Seaton Delaval have a guarantee of 50 years I think on their framework. I’ve had mine about 40 years now and reupholstered by them . I do get extra arm covers.

My parents have Delcor and it’s lasted 55 years with one recover so far. It’s older than me!

we have a Delcor too which is now 7 years old and looks like new. It cost a small fortune but as previous poster said it had a 50 year frame guarantee and we expect it to last till the end of of our lives! Luckily we have really traditional tastes and have designed the room so it should look good for 20+ years when we might look to recover.

We bought a Habitat Robin Day sofa about 28 years ago and bits of the leather seating are a bit bashed (but we have cats) and its still going strong. I don't think habitat do them any more but you can find them on ebay etc. About 10 years ago we also bought a G Plan vintage sofa which looks like its still brand new

lunaemma · 24/04/2025 21:01

Should say if anyone is reading this and looking for decent foam for cushions, this company were very helpful and you can ring and speak to a human straight away! I paid about £120 but much cheaper than a new sofa

I've just taken a look at the JL G Plan range. Looks great. I wonder is it the same manufacturer as the G Plan furniture from the 1960s? My mother has an original sideboard from then which I covet!

NewsdeskJC · 24/04/2025 21:11

We have dfs sofas
One brown leather one we have had for 13 years. Still looks new.

Hi, did you buy the G Plan Vintage range, or do you mean an actual original vintage sofa? We like the look of the G Plan Vintage range, specifically the Seventy One, so interested if this is what you meant. Thank you 😊

We have DFS sofas I'm guessing nearly ten years old now and they structurally look new. We upgraded the cushions to the more expensive foam ones (or whatever) and they are perfect. To be honest I wish they weren't so good as I'd quite like a change!

My friend bought some from Made and they were rubbish, lasted few years tops.

Snarf23 · 24/04/2025 21:19

Sometimes think its designs etc. Ours were from sofology 8 years ago still doing well …. only two of us though.

My DFS sofa has lasted well but I’ve just bought new foam for the cushions which has made a big difference and wasn’t too expensive

Where do you order soda foam?

myrtleWilson · 24/04/2025 21:32

Hi @roonetta yes it was GP Vintage rather than actual vintage. In my head it was a 60 number but I've had a look and none of the 60's look like that. It is closest to the Martha was is 1970s rather than 60s but we liked that mash up with the Robin Day. I love the 71 - it reminds me of another habitat sofa we loved in the 90s which was v low and grey - we termed it 'airport chic'

That’s great, thanks. It’s definitely a contender 😊

I have a duresta, 30 years and still going strong. You can buy them on eBay quite economically.

hotchocdrinker · 24/04/2025 21:41

I had a lovely leather sofa from Sofa Sofa - Mezzo. Did a good 12 years and I only got rid of it as I fancied a change. Unfortunately my new one is nowhere near as comfortable!

waltzingparrot · 24/04/2025 21:45

We've had our Tetrad Eastwood sofa for 25 years and I'm sure it will do another 25 years it's so well made.
I have had a new set of cushion covers in that time.

I loved Harveys! Shame some of the best shops are no more 🥺. Do you mind me asking which sofa you went for from DFS?

https://www.dfs.co.uk/plush/psh16ase6

this one in Forest Green. I would say, it’s super comfy and I’ve slept on it when dh has been snoring when he has a cold and I don’t mind sleeping on it because it really is that comfy. However, I wouldn’t choose it when I’m 60. It’s low and I kind of inelegantly roll off it 😂 it’s like a bed that’s appropriate for the living room. We got the poof too.

TeenLifeMum · 24/04/2025 21:48

You definitely need to try them. I knew exactly what I wanted and was between 2 joules ones. Got to dfs and sat on them, I hated both. Dc sat on the one I got that was completely not what I wanted - velvet with dogs/cushions that move across the back. But once we sat on it we were sold. I only sat down to take stock and have a think so sat where the dc were.
