Desperately in need of neutral wall colour advice- are warm grey walls a no no( thinking of Swansdown)

So I have to sort paint for the decorator this week. I have tried hundreds of testers. It’s for a north facing kitchen with mid green cupboards and white quartz with a grey marble.

I love skimming stone but as it’s a kitchen we need to go with Dulux trade diamond and Dulux SS dupe is awful. Egyptian Cotton equally awful.

So after trying every neutral under the sun we are down to Dulux Swansdown. It’s kind of a very pale warm grey. I think it’s ok. I don’t love it but it’s not yellow, purple or pink in undertone or too cold but it is grey albeit warm and pale. Am I going to regret having essentially grey walls?

Help!

Don't get grey, it sucks the colour out of everything.

What about plaster? Setting Plaster by F&B for example. It's an earthy tone and goes nicely with green. Lots of paint companies have different variations.

There are some examples here.

Have you tried Dulux Chalky downs?

Semiramide · 09/03/2025 15:36

Firm no to grey.

Why neutral?

Be brave - a warm Mediterranean colour like apricot or a toned down orange would go very well with your green units.

So this is the swansdown, is very pale and sometimes doesn’t look grey. Still no?

If you are telling yourself that sometimes it doesn't look grey then you shouldn't have grey

DappledThings · 09/03/2025 15:48

I have mid-green cabinets too and a lovely yellow on the walls. Dulux Lemon Spirit. I'd steer away from neutrals altogether.

Hmmm you’re right but it’s an odd colour, not so much grey as plumage colour I guess. It does go really well ie the best so far and I’ve tried a lot! I guess I’m kind of hoping the search is over.😫

What about Hardwick White by F&B?

The op has said
but as it’s a kitchen we need to go with Dulux trade diamond
ie she wants a durable paint that can be cleaned ie not F&B

Exactly this. I’d end up going for skimming stone if I could do farrow and ball and the Dulux make up of SS is nothing like it.

If you go to most good decorating shops, you can choose your paint and have it mixed to your colour of choice.

Yep have tried a few but Dulux matches aren’t great. SS was awful.

I've never done Dulux, I use Tikkurila which has always been great. There are lots of different brands suitable for kitchens.

LuckysDadsHat · 09/03/2025 17:05

Dulux rock salt is a great neutral with a hint of grey and it most lights it looks an off white.

Against the grain but I like it and it sounds like it ticks your boxes.

Decorator wants to use and highly recommends Dulux diamond Matt. He comes highly recommended too. 😫It’s doing my head in. It’s been the most difficult thing to sort.

I will probably get laughed at for this, but I like magnolia - its light yet warm and very versatile. It would look good with the green in your kitchen, and blends well with any other colour. You don't want something dull or chilly looking in a north facing room.

Whatever works for you. I'm sure it will look lovely, don't worry.

Catsbatsandrats · 09/03/2025 17:29

We used Valspars Shetland sweater in a sunny room - it’s a warm and very pale grey, I think it looks very classic against all the natural materials (wood and stone) in the room

H0n · 09/03/2025 17:36

Sail white is nice

Hermyknee · 09/03/2025 17:54

Dulux Jasmine White. An oldie but a goodie. It’s almost white but has a warmer tone.

The ‘diamond’ paint is really scrubable so don’t worry about going light.

sunbum · 22/03/2025 23:36

I love Dulux Swansdown, I'm about to paint my living room in it. I want neutral as have bright furnishings and its a west facing facing room, don't want full on grey and Egyptian and Timeless too yellow undertone for me so I think Swansdown is perfect, can't see the issue?

Inonly use Dulux Trade paint, its so much better quality and coverage is incredible. I do a lot of painting and it is by far the easiest (and quickest) to paint with, probably why professional decorators always ask for it.

piscofrisco · 23/03/2025 06:27

Check out coat paints. They do a neutrals pack of samples. The paint is the best I’ve used.

piscofrisco · 23/03/2025 06:29

Sorry-meant to say they also do specific neutrals for north or south facing rooms-made a huge difference in our house.

WonderingWanda · 23/03/2025 07:02

Dulux Just Walnut is a lovely warm neutral.
