So I have to sort paint for the decorator this week. I have tried hundreds of testers. It’s for a north facing kitchen with mid green cupboards and white quartz with a grey marble.

I love skimming stone but as it’s a kitchen we need to go with Dulux trade diamond and Dulux SS dupe is awful. Egyptian Cotton equally awful.

So after trying every neutral under the sun we are down to Dulux Swansdown. It’s kind of a very pale warm grey. I think it’s ok. I don’t love it but it’s not yellow, purple or pink in undertone or too cold but it is grey albeit warm and pale. Am I going to regret having essentially grey walls?

Help!

Swansdown has a nice slightly blue shimmer to it when the light hits, it's really nice and I've used it in a few houses now. I also use Dulux trade diamond Matt for everything these days!

Dulux rock salt is a great neutral with a hint of grey and it most lights it looks an off white.

Second this, I have it in 2 bathrooms and it only looks not white when you see it next to the skirting
I can find some pics if it helps?

well if the decorator only wants diamond matt and you don't think they match any other colours properly, you can either go with a diamond matt colour, or just pick random colours and hope they do a lucky mismatch to a colour you like when they mix you a sample pot!

Personal choice - I wouldn't go pale grey unless I had to and there are very few reasons you have to - have you checked what Pumice or Pearl Harbour, which are 'almost' neutrals but might warm up a north facing room, look like?

But ultimately it sounds like you really want a 'neutral' neutral, in which case if that's the one you like most then just go for it. At worst it'll make a good undercoat if you want to add some colour later

You can get dulux trade paint mixed in any dulux colour (or colour match), not just the named trade ones.

I'm with you on cool neutral for a south/west facing room, think it looks relaxing and calming. Yes people have overdone all grey interiors but if you have a lot of other colour in the room I think pale grey (which Swansdown isnt) can look great.

It does make me laugh how people are telling us to put beige and magnolia and cream on walls again. A few years ago that was the height of naff, and will be again I'm sure.

I personally have decided that I like cool colours not warm colours and am sticking to that. I have adjustable lighting so its very easy to warm up a room if other people insist (I like cool white lighting too 😄)

The swatch looks green to me. It looks like a lovely colour actually. I have a lilac undertone grey from Dulux in my bedroom and I bloody love it though. Not all greys are bad.

[I despise magnolia with a passion so please don’t go for that]

I’m the same
my walls are grey but then I have a lot of blue and green around as well
Basically the colours I dress in - I never wear orange, red, yellow and they don’t appeal to me for decor either!

But the OP is painting a north-facing kitchen that already has a lot of green in it -- north-facing light is going to bring out the cold, greenish tones in any colour, so she needs to go warmer.

What kind of mid-green are your cabinets, OP?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 28/03/2025 17:23

That colour seems like a cold grey to me.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 28/03/2025 17:26

In fact Dulux describe it as a “cool neutral “.

May I ask what colour you went for in the end please. I am looking for a cool neutral, like a stone white. It’s for a triple aspect lounge with east, south and west windows.

sunbum · 06/07/2025 10:17

Dulusx swansdown is exactly what I would describe as stone white as a cool neutral. I put it in my SW facing living room and really like it. The only thing I would say is that in cerian lights, dusk really, it can have a lilac hue, which I like but others may not.
