Sad looking playroom!

We have just cleared out a triangular bit of our third floor which used to be loft so that we can convert it into a playroom for our 1 year old daughter. We have managed to clear it and now it looks very sad and lifeless! Any tips please.

A just put some toys in it. She’s one. She won’t care!
Dont waste your energy ( said as a mum of four) decorating is for you, not her!!

verycloakanddaggers · 21/02/2025 21:23

Is it split level? I'd be worried about that in case they fall off, it might need a banister.

The easiest way to cheer it up is either a bright paint or those big stickers, something like a big tree?

That shelf is crying out for a doll's house.

MatildasMummy25 · 22/02/2025 17:26

No it's not split level. That shelf bit comes up to her neck so there's no way that she'll be able to climb over it. It's a kind of converted bit of the roof. It's very strange!

Large print on wall? And I agree once the toys are in all style goes out the window. I'd get some easy to open or tip in plastic containers for storage.

FrannyScraps · 22/02/2025 17:42

How much use will a third floor playroom actually get?

Your 1yo might not be able to climb up there but I can guarantee your future 2 or 3 yo will attempt it!

We converted our third door to a playroom. It became a storage room. The kids wanted to be near us, all their toys were still in the living room / kitchen.

Slide and steps
cushions
don’t waste time energy or money

Diningtableornot · 22/02/2025 17:55

Have a lot of fun painting some shapes on that wall in leftover emulsion paint. It can be your play area too!

BleachedJumper · 22/02/2025 17:55

Could you make it a cosy reading den?

Fairy lights! And a comfy chair for you to sit doom scrolling reading while you're keeping her company/playing with her,?

Definitely some fun and inspiring prints on the walls too.

Edited for typos 🤦🏼‍♀️

I meant to put up the pictures of the wall and accidentally posted everything saved as sprinkles on my phone 😅

Geneticsbunny · 23/02/2025 08:20

What are you going to do when you are up there keeping an eye on her? Maybe put a comfy chair and table and reading light for you. Could double as somewhere to read stories together?

Yet!

It doesn't take long for them work out how to push boxes and climb.

DragonFly98 · 23/02/2025 13:36

i don’t understand why you would do this, makes much more sense to put toys in the living room than treck up to a random bit of space.

MatildasMummy25 · 23/02/2025 14:02

Wow. Thought I would as asking for a little bit of advise! People are very negative!!

Is it not just a shelf?

OP, some wall stickers and fairy lights, and then some toys on the shelf. That's all it needs

Sugepaper · 23/02/2025 14:08

I’m not sure I get this. A playroom in the roof? What are you going to do up there? You can’t leave her there it’s not safe.

BigRenoLittleBudget · 23/02/2025 14:08

Wall stickers off Etsy
Fairy lights
Use leftover paint or get some sample pots and paint a big rainbow on the wall

BigRenoLittleBudget · 23/02/2025 14:10

Also I get that you don’t want to be negative but pp are right that this can’t be a traditional playroom as it wouldn’t be safe to leave her there unsupervised.
so why don’t you fully lean into that and get some stuff to make it an obstacle course or get one of those climbing triangles or get an indoor slide or something. Make it a space you can go to do something different together

People aren't being negative, what they're explaining is it'll potentially make life hard for you as you'll have to be up there with her, which would mean you couldn't do jobs downstairs.

Dragonstar · 23/02/2025 17:37

If you're good at carpentry or someone is...
a little fence along the front and some paint to frame the outside as a house and little steps up. If you make it safe (obviously you'd be in there with her) it would be a beautiful little den/reading nook. A nice rug in pretty colours to match on the bottom layer. And some baskets for blocks, toys etc.

Dragonstar · 23/02/2025 17:42

I think a much simplified version of this, you could 'create' the effect of the wood be using the shape of the ceiling, if you get me. And it would need to be safer and lower for a tiny one.
