Will a navy blue kitchen look dated quickly?

We're looking at getting a new kitchen and I'm really taken with navy blue cupboards. But I'm worried I'll get bored quickly and if we come to sell it will not appeal to everyone. But I'm so bored of white and cream. Should we just go for it?

Yes! I got a super matte navy blue kitchen in July and absolutely love it.

KevinAndTracy · 05/02/2025 15:52

I don't think it will look dated for quite a few years and infinitely preferable to grey!

Viviennemary · 05/02/2025 15:56

I think it will look dated in a bit. But if you like it I don't think it matters that much.

CulturalNomad · 05/02/2025 16:05

and if we come to sell it will not appeal to everyone

But that's true of any style cabinet you choose, isn't it? I do think it's a trend that will appear dated at some point, but personally I love the look myself. If you like it just go for it! I don't believe in decorating with an eye to resale value (unless you really don't plan on staying in the home long term).

TheFlis · 05/02/2025 16:06

We got a navy kitchen last year and love it!

TriangleScratch · 05/02/2025 16:07

I have dark green kitchen cupboards - 10 years old now and everyone told me I'd regret it. Never regretted for a moment. It's a colour I love and makes me feel happy every day. Genuinely.

Go for the blue!

FKAT · 05/02/2025 16:08

Don't most kitchens look dated because interior fashions change every 2-3 years whereas kitchens last a decade or more. My kitchen is black and white as it was built when David Cameron was PM and skinny jeans were the height of cool.

My friend is a real edgelord when it comes to interiors but she loves her painted sage kitchen which I think of as a little 5-10 years ago.

MissyB1 · 05/02/2025 16:09

I think just get what colour you love, you're the one living with it.

ShowAndGo · 05/02/2025 16:10

I've had a navy blue kitchen for about a few years now and I still love it - looks great with brass fittings/lights! One thing I would say, though, is that it does show up the fingerprints more than a paler colour, so be prepared to keep wiping down high traffic cupboards.

PiastriThePastry · 05/02/2025 16:11

I think you should get what you like and what makes you happy. Is navy for kitchen units a bit ‘done’ now? IMO yes, BUT I don’t think anyone should be slaves to trends, least of all in their home!

Nannylovesshopping · 05/02/2025 16:19

I have navy blue bottom cupboards and lime green top cupboards, not to every bodies taste, but I love it, what I’m saying is go with what you like!

ValentineValentineV · 05/02/2025 16:21

I think it’s just on the cusp of looking dated already.

mondaytosunday · 05/02/2025 16:30

I have a really dark navy kitchen in a rental I own and it looks fab. Did it in 2016 and looks as good as new and so elegant.

ByTheSea · 05/02/2025 16:40

I went for it and love my new matte navy kitchen. This is my forever home so it's important for me to like it.

SheridansPortSalut · 05/02/2025 16:43

Everything dates. It's unavoidable, so you may as well go for what you like.

Autumn1990 · 05/02/2025 16:48

I’ve got navy blue. I’m fully aware it will be the avocado bathroom suite of the future but I love it and I’m not planning on moving. I could buy new doors if I wanted to change the colour later

MumonabikeE5 · 05/02/2025 16:51

Do you like blue?
does it go with other things in your house?
are you confident in your taste or do you keep changing stuff to fit in with the style whims in the media?
I think blue is lovely and safe.
I didn’t like grey. For me using that would have been media telling me to choose it. But I like blue, so whilst it might be popular right now, what that means is that’s lots of options to choose from, when previously there weren’t. and I’m choosing it because I like it and it fits with my homes overall style.

The issue, for me, is less about "dating" and more about being completely unimaginative.

Navy kitchens are everywhere in interior magazines, Instagram, Pinterest. Basic energy.

But go for what you want.

Helpel · 05/02/2025 16:58

We had a dark blue kitchen put in in 2021. 4 years in it could already be accused of being 'dated'. However we still love it, new guests always compliment it (without being asked so I assume it's a genuine compliment) and as we know, people are still having new blue kitchens put in. So yes it will eventually date, but as many people have pointed out, everything does unless you literally have the most plain boring kitchen known to man.

We have navy top cupboards and cream bottom ones. Had it since 2017

See, I think white kitchens are as close as it gets to “unimaginative” but people love them and they’re classic.

When I was buying my kitchen, green was everywhere. But when it came down to it, I just loved the blue - when it was in front of me it just looked so elegant. Ours isn’t a true navy, more like a dark blue crossed with a dash of petrol blue (Cobham Blue from DIYK). We have a cranberry red range cooker and copper splashbacks plus a brick wall and I just love it.

I’m honestly not bothered if it dates. I don’t plan on moving and I love looking at it. Similar to a PP, I get loads of compliments. Tbh, if I had to buy another kitchen today I can’t think of a colour I’d prefer. I’ve never liked grey, I’m not keen on neutrals like greige etc, Insuppose there’s green but I still prefer blue. I’d be changing it for the sake of it! If anything I’d go with a darker, true navy blue! So basically blue again 😂

Whenim63 · 06/02/2025 07:38

Unless you are planning on selling in the near future, get what you love. Personally, I’m a big fan of navy and I cannot abide gloss/flat/handless kitchens and free standing kitchens fill me with totally irrational rage 🤣🤣 But there was a whole thread on here with people who love them. We are all different, choose what YOU want.

ZenNudist · 06/02/2025 07:44

I think it will still look current for a few years and then as long as you love it its safe enough to last which is what you need.

I just put in a blue bathroom cabinet.

FriendlyWerewolf · 06/02/2025 10:27

They will date but all kitchens and trends date. And if you get decent solid wood cabinets, not laminate, then you can always paint them in the future anyway. Go with what you like!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 06/02/2025 15:13

Thanks for all the replies. I think I worded my OP slightly wrong in that I don't care if the kitchen looks unfashionable because I never follow trends (well rarely!) and just go with what I like. I guess what I meant is whether I'll get tired of it quickly or whether I'll love it forever. May I also ask what colour walls those navy kitchen owners have? I always wanted bright yellow walls but the kids have forbidden it with navy!
