Where do adults buy curtains?

Asked a similar question about beds and got some responses that changed how I bought mattresses! I have bought curtains from Dunelm, Next and John Lewis but am so bored by their offerings. Where does fabulous curtains?

The last curtains I bought were from M&S. Velvet, pinch pleat, fully lined. I needed 3 pairs as curtain rail is 30 foot and drop is 99 inches. I bought the biggest and longest and shortened them to fit from the top. They worked out cheaper than buying the fabric.

BeAzureAnt · 18/01/2025 21:21

Still like John Lewis ready made. Making basic curtains is also not difficult if you have a sewing machine. Etsy has some folks that make them custom as well.

Where do children buy curtains?

The children’s curtain store (sorry).

Came downstairs earlier and was sad to see that my curtains were drawn. I was relieved to see that all the furniture was real though.

I guess I need to pull myself together.

I have used an online company several times and my daughter has used them too. Excellent quality.

You can get samples of the fabrics, then add the size you want, what lining, whether you want them gathered up (or do it yourself) etc.

We have been really pleased with curtains and roman blinds.

I make my own, I've never bought curtains or roman blinds in my life. I line and interline them and they look fantastic.

Interlining is the difference between ordinary curtains and fabulous curtains.

REDB99 · 18/01/2025 21:39

Use your local curtain / blind shop. Usually very knowledgeable, will measure up, advise on fabric, fit them and sort out any problems you may have. Obviously it’s much more expensive but they’ll last for years. The curtains my mum paid £900 for in early 2000s are now in one of my bedrooms.

I’ve seen some second hand Laura Ashley on EBay. They are really decent quality.

That's why I do it, the difference is so obvious.

Another always buying from next, dunelm and John Lewis. The house we have just moved into does have some made to measure curtains from Hillary’s and I can see how the quality is better than some cheaper ones.
Made to measure curtains are not in my price range though. Had a quote and Laura Ashley once for some to match a wallpaper and they were £800!!

@MaryBeardy , I’d be interested in the answers you got for your beds thread if you wouldn’t mind linking :)

SnarkSideOfLife · 19/01/2025 09:20

I’ve used 247 curtains online a lot and been really happy. Made to measure.

What do you mean by adults?

Who else buys curtains?

MaryBeardy · 19/01/2025 09:36

Thanks everyone for the input. I have been trying Vinted but will look at eBay too. I think I have been converted to interlining.

my next question is, looking at my neighbours’ windows this morning: do adults these days have blinds and not curtains? Maybe I’ve been doing this all wrong.

How easy is it to make curtains with eyelet tops? My mum used to make them with tape that needed to be pulled into pleats but how do you make them with eyelets? Is it difficult and do you need something special to make and fix the holes and metal circles?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/01/2025 09:48

There used to be a place, down a side street in Soho where I heard that adults could buy 'curtains'.

I never went there myself because I'm more a 'venetian blinds' sort of person (if you know what I mean 😉).

It might still.be there.

toomuchcheesetoomuchchocolate · 19/01/2025 09:56

I think you're actually asking where to buy curtains if you can afford more than ready made curtains.
There is bound to be a curtain shop in your area. Google them. These days, they are as likely to be in an industrial estate as anywhere as then the rent is cheaper for the rolls of fabric they keep. Or it could be a smaller shop in a town or village centre and they have books with swatches of fabric.
Do be prepared for the price hike. Do be prepared for the fact that you may well fall in love with some astronomically priced fabric and have to compromise on a cheaper one and forever yearn for your curtains that got away! Do be prepared for the lead in time. Do be prepared for the fact that, having spend a lot of money, you may feel you have to hang onto them forever more even if you are thoroughly sick of them!

I moved recently and needed some new curtains but no time to make to shop (disabled so it's hard getting around). I turned to Amazon! I bought what I thought were cheap and cheerful to do for now. I don't ever want to part from them. They are fanstastic quality and make, and I paid very little. I was shocked, but there we go. Unexpected find.

Can you link please?

LynetteScavo · 19/01/2025 10:35

Actual adults have their curtains made to measure, and also have blinds on the same window.

I'm a pretend adult and I buy curtains at Dunelm or Next and have them altered by MIL to fit. Sometimes MIL will make me curtains, ans then throw in some fusion covers to be nice. It's what she does professionally, and is brilliant at it - to her spending thousands on curtains is what people do. She thinks I'm a cheapskate.

soupforbrains · 19/01/2025 10:39

This is probably going to make be sound very pretentious and or bourgeois but I select and buy the fabric and then have a lady in the village who is a retired textiles teacher and very good seamstress make up the curtains.

I did this originally because I moved into a house that has weird non-standard width windows and couldn’t get off the shelf curtains that would work. But I also couldn’t afford to pay for the bespoke services offered by businesses. So instead I found someone willing to make the curtains and found fabric I loved and it worked out a reasonable price.

SnarkSideOfLife · 19/01/2025 11:31

I know what OP means by adults. I bought my first house at 21yo and was skint, got tab top curtains from Ikea.

when I was a bit older and could afford nicer made to measure curtains it felt quite grown up 😁. I was finally a proper adult.

Most people do that, not pretentious at all.

Good thread OP and hope you found your grown up curtains.
I'm looking for blinds on JL as not on Facebook so can't find a local lady here.
