Lovely curtain material: please help me find some

We are old. Our house is old. Our furniture is old; various shades of brown wood. After many years, Our bedroom is being redecorated and I have chosen Dulux Heritage Beige Biscuit for walls, white elsewhere. There is no going back; man with rollers is working as I type. The carpet is forest green. I have a tapestry that will go above the bedhead. I know there must be curtain fabric somewhere that will make all these elements come together. Please help me find it.

Linwood fabrics ?

StanfreyPock · 19/11/2024 13:48

For fabric to make up try this site https://www.terrysfabrics.co.uk/collections/heritage-fabrics?page=2
I get my fabrics and linings from this firm, they are very good. The heritage section includes William Morris type prints and similar - might clash with the tapestry, but if you are after a more maximalist touch they'd be good.

Not sure about ready made if that's more what you're after, this site does them too but I never look at those!

I’d pick up the pink/red from the tapestry and use a texture like this https://www.janeclayton.co.uk/romo-elcot-fabric-postbox-7985-12/

or this

winewolfhowls · 19/11/2024 19:11

That tapestry is amazing 😁

rosegoldwatcher · 19/11/2024 19:51

@LongLegsLoopy - that silk is lovely!

OP, I would definitely go with a plain in a red to match the skirts of the folk in your tapestry or a green to coordinate with your carpet (if you don't like red.)

I think that a large expanse of pattern (on curtains) might fight with the tapestry.
You could have a little bit of a heritage pattern on some bed cushions, perhaps?

oldestmumaintheworld · 19/11/2024 19:55

Green velvet curtains from IKEA. A bargain and will last years.

Gagagardener · 19/11/2024 20:23

Thank you all. You have given me lots of ideas - and I wdnt have thought of IKEA on my own. I'm feeling maximalist right now, but I'd like velvet or textured or silk as well.

The room is quite big, and the tapestry will be on the (windowless) west wall, opposite the door, while the window curtains on the north wall can't be seen without going right into the room. I am about to send for some swatches, including iLiv's Rhapsody in malachite. Do look at it and let me know what you think. I may also send for one of everything you've suggested.

I don't suppose I shall ever have another bedroom makeover, and certainly not in this house with this husband!

That looks fine @Gagagardener

Gagagardener · 19/11/2024 20:38

+@AnneKipankitoo Your fabulous velvet, aptly named "Bizarre" is £99 a metre. Too expensive for me to risk doing the making-up. (Or buying, actually.) And if the online vendors made my curtains, they'd cost nearly £1200!

I need an end-of-roll length of about 8m (the pattern can't need matching, can it?) with a whopping Black Friday discount. It would be glorious. Much more exciting than iLiv's Rhapsody in malachite. But thank you saying they wd look fine.

OP posts:
AnneKipankitoo · 19/11/2024 20:50

Yes, they are expensive. I did not look at the
price.
I think the Rhapsody malachite should go with the green carpet.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 19/11/2024 20:58

How about a terracotta velvet, to pick up a shade from the tapestry and go complement the green carpet? Crushed velvet if you want an interesting texture rather than a pattern.
I love how committed you are to your bold scheme, in a world that can be too greige!

JaninaDuszejko · 19/11/2024 21:00

I think you need a plain or textured fabric or possibly an abstract pattern like stripes.

Have a look at some sites selling fabric remnants, Haines Collection is probably the most upmarket one but there are lots about, I buy a lot of remnants off etsy. Means you get more for your money and are saving the environment.

Fabric Remnants

We believe that even the most meagre of fabric remnants can be repurposed and put to good use, and we won’t let good quality stock go to waste. Our designer fabric remnants and clearance collection holds hidden gems: find offcuts of less than a few met...

Just bite the bullet and go for for full on William morris. Most of them are Autumnal colour schemes and so will go with your beautiful tapestry.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 19/11/2024 21:26

@Gagagardener not sure where you're based, but Immanuel Fabrics in Burnley is fantastic for interiors/upholstery fabric, some dressmaking material too. Think they're on Facebook, no website. It's more drop in and see what they've got.

Gagagardener · 19/11/2024 22:32

@EducatingArti and the others of you who mentioned William Morris: I've promised not to sneak in any more birds on wallpaper or soft furnishings. Papered daughter's nursery with little birds around 1986. Strawberry Thief wd go with the carpet, but I fear it wd make my tapestry look twee. I've done a lot of Morris: I began using his fabrics when I upholstered a chair with Blackthorn in the late 70s. When we first came here, in late 80s, we papered a whole room with Sanderson wallpaper with birds (can't recall name of pattern) and I made incredibly cheap curtains look really smart by adding matching fabric trim. I toned it down into plain walls with curtains with iLiv's birds in 2021. I do want pattern at the window... I am now planning a TransPennine excursion to Burnley... Thank you all for your interest and suggestions.

@Gagagardener enjoy Immanuel! It's a hidden gem, you have to be prepared to root through the shelves stacked high with hundred of bolts. It's in a corner terrace, bit of an odd location/building but full of gorgeous stuff.
My other suggestion is Empress Mills in Colne, you could do both trips in one go if you're driving over. Let us know what you find!

@MargaritaPracticallyCan many thanks for this suggestion. Think I'll wait for slightly less chilly weather- frost on the ground today.

Good call, it's very frosty over this way today too!

AnneKipankitoo · 20/11/2024 09:03

Empress Mills sounds awesome… and I don’t sew!

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 20/11/2024 11:22

@AnneKipankitoo it's fabulous! East Lancashire has a history steeped in all things weaving, fabric so it's really nice to still see businesses built on that heritage.
I don't sew either, but my darling mum was a brilliant hobby seamstress and my earliest memories are material shopping on market stalls so mum could make beautiful clothes, curtains, blinds, anything. She even made my gorgeous wedding dress 25 years ago. Mum died in June this year, 6 weeks after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, and I'm struggling to know what to do with all the handmade clothes she spent hours creating.
I think I might hold a small gathering for her friends next year, so they can choose a piece to remember her by. I just can't face putting them in a charity bag as they're not sized for sale, so not sure they'd be sellable.
That was a ramble!

AnneKipankitoo · 20/11/2024 16:46

Oh , that’s lovely @MargaritaPracticallyCan .
My Mum died 2 weeks ago and she loved to sew too. She made my bridesmaid dresses.
I recently bought a dress from Etsy. It was 1950s bespoke. The seller put the measurements on sale blurb.
Quite often they write in the blurb fits UK size 8 , US 4
I hope they go to a good home where they will be appreciated.

Have a scroll through these. The standfast and barracks factory shop is fab… anf produce the William Morris prints and they will send samples if you aren’t near Lancaster
