Corner sofa - will it help with discomfort?

Odd question I know
i have a long term niggly back and find it really hard to get comfortable in general.
but I’m always comfy in bed, so spend a lot of leisure time there - working, watching stuff, reading.
I’d like to be downstairs more- I have three normal sofas, can’t get comfy as I like to have my feet up and stretched out, but then I’m side on and twisting to talk to other person so it’s uncomfortable on the sofa.
anyone have similar? Would a corner sofa help? I’m looking at the Viv in dfs…

Or a snuggle chair?

Not sure about a corner sofa. I find a recliner with a high back is very comfy when my legs ache.

DanielaDressen · 03/11/2024 16:56

I have a similar issue and think I’ll get a recliner sofa next time.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/11/2024 16:59

Ah okay, that’s interesting, what is it about a recliner that appeals?
im in bed right now, knees up, feet flat, back against the (padded) headrest, im
comfy. I’m happy with my legs out straight too. I hadn’t thought of a recliner!

Not quite the same thing, but I have similar issues - I saw a cuddle sofa on Wayfair - it's a two seater sofa, but if two people sit on it they'd be "snug". It is perfect - great support, spacious without taking up the entire room. If anyone sits in it they get the dead eye from me! It's this one...

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/11/2024 17:11

@EmmaMaria That’s very pretty!
the problem I have is if I sit along the sofa I’m side on to the room, and I can’t turn my head sideways for too long!

Well I sit sideways on my sofa with my feet up but still get backache. It’s not overly supportive? Plus I’m twisted if I want to watch tv.

I HAD a fantastic traditional 3-seater sofa with hard seat/back cushions, not floppy things. It was almost as long as a bed and the arm rests were about 25cm high, just right to rest your head. Best sofa EVER for naps and single people wouldn’t use the double bed feature it was so comfortable.

Now I have a 3+1 corner sofa with a semi- circular bend. It will probably outlive me but I dislike it because somebody is always at a disadvantage, either watching TV or having a conversation side-on and the person in the corner needs a cushion at their back because it’s so deep.

I’d say try out your new sofa for depth of seat, height of head support, ease of standing up and firmness of cushions. And lie down on it!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/11/2024 17:17

Yes good point, I’ll go and lie on some!

An upholstered footstool?

An upholstered footstool?

Oh yes, that’s a good shout

We have a sofa where the legs raise up but the back doesn't also recline, so not a full recliner. We really wanted a corner but it doesn't work well in the room and we didn't want to constantly move a footstool.

We absolutely love it and it looks like a totally normal sofa when the legs are tucked up. Ours is from furniture village but there was also one at DFS which we considered.

Ted22 · 03/11/2024 23:07

OP I have to have my legs elevated for health/comfort reasons too. A corner sofa is ideal for this. However a large footstool works as well. You can get a massive one on wayfair. Check its the same height as your sofa before ordering.

If you can get one in a similar material/colour to your sofa, you can basically convert it into an l-shape sofa, and then move the footstool out the way when its not convenient as well.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/11/2024 23:25

I’ll have a look on wayfair, thanks

Reclining chair, some need a footstool, some have built in leg bits.

autumnleavesrcoming · 03/11/2024 23:39

Perhaps you ought to try and find a showroom.

Our electric recliner is good because it's fully adjustable so you can change positions easily.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 03/11/2024 23:46

I have a chaise type (L shaped) sofa (like a corner sofa but without the back down one edge) and it’s MY seat! I often fall asleep on it as it’s so comfy for having my feet up.

I had two sofas the same and at one point I put the chaise part from both of them onto one sofa, so it was like having a bed in the living room, perfection. But annoyingly my adult DS objected and said it was like living in Charlie Bucket’s house

My DP has a sofa with 2 reclining seats and it is good, because the head rest goes backwards as well as the foot rest coming up. However it isn’t as sturdy as a chaise sofa, as the footrest is supported on ‘hinges’ so I’m always wary of putting too much weight on it. It’s better in that it doesn’t take up as much space when the foot rest is down, but you still need enough space to put it up, and you can’t really lie on your side on it, whereas I toss and turn from one side to the other when I get stiff.

Given the choice I’d choose corner sofa or chaise all day long.

I loved my ektorp sofa from IKEA, I had the footstool that had storage space inside of it. I could push it up to the sofa or slightly away depending on what position I was in. I miss it. We have recliners now, but I'd go back to my old setup if I could.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/11/2024 00:01

Aw great, thanks. @SnowflakeSmasher86 i laughed at the Charlie Bucket image!
yes sounds like a chaise or footstool is the way to go. It’s so uncomfortable sitting with my legs down, I don’t know why though!

I have this footstool and love it. It's from Stressless, but used to be covered in awful fake leather, so I made it pretty instead <preens>

I have an ektorp and can't get comfortable on it at all, even with the footstool. My teens don't find it comfy. My friends always sit awkwardly on it when they visit.

I am disappointed as I read loads of positive reviews about it online, even tried it in-store and thought it was ok, but alas not.
Currently waiting for delivery of a replacement, and it can't come quick enough.

PrimalLass · 04/11/2024 06:25

The Ektorp is too shallow.

Maybe good for short people? I find most sofas too deep! And too high! My feet can't touch the floor

An upholstered footstool?

Seconding this. We have one that perfectly matches the sofa so it basically acts as an l-shape, but can be moved so it’s more versatile. I have short legs and a bad back so find sitting without my feet up very uncomfortable, the footstool really helps. It looks like a slightly deeper, higher version of the Ektorp, from what I can see online.
