Forest green kitchen- will it date?

kitchenadvice12 · 24/09/2024 09:33

About to spend ££££ on a new kitchen and am drawn to Forest green with copper accents and white granite worktops. Worried it is a bit bold and I should play it safe with a neutral colour. Current kitchen is cream. Such a lot of money to spend to get it wrong!

Thinking of going with wren so any views on them appreciated too

We went for neutral cupboards/ worktops and painted the walls green so if we want to change it we just need to repaint the walls.

NewNameNoelle · 24/09/2024 09:39

Sounds lovely.

All kitchens will date and neutral will be boring and then also date.

So go with what makes you happy now and you can always repaint the cupboards in 10yrs when you are bored of them

WeAreNotCookingTheSpoon · 24/09/2024 09:41

I’ve had a green kitchen for 25 years and still love it.

SwedishEdith · 24/09/2024 09:41

Everything dates. Work with the light the room gets and what you like.

NiggleNoggle · 24/09/2024 09:42

Can you afford a kitchen that you could repaint in the future? Otherwise just go with what you like. As a PP said they will all date!

minisomum · 24/09/2024 09:42

I'm thinking similar (although we were going to go for a slightly more olive shade of green) and I have similar concerns about it dating!

I'm going to hedge my bets I think and go for cupboard doors that can be repainted and neutral worksurfaces.

mushpush · 24/09/2024 09:45

Ooo sounds lovely! Kitchens can be re-sprayed so easily to change the colour, especially if you're getting classic counters and hardware then it's easily updatable in the future if you need.

Green is a classic imo though!

toastofthetown · 24/09/2024 09:47

Everything will date eventually. Even if the colours don’t, the styles and finishes are all of their time. I was on holiday cottage last year with wooden floors and countertops, and white cupboard doors, which sound classic and timeless but the whole effect was still dated. You can always repaint the cupboard doors if your tire of it down the line.

Aposterhasnoname · 24/09/2024 09:48

Go with what you love. Who cares if it dates. If you go with something else you’ll be forever side eying green kitchens and wishing you’d gone with it.

As for Wren, I know loads of people that have used them and not one has a good word to say about them. One friends kitchen is literally falling apart after five years. We were all set to go with them till we heard all the horror stories. Went with magnet in the end and can’t praise them enough. That said I think it’s all about the fitter. Get the best possible fitter and any kitchen will be fab.

annonymousse · 24/09/2024 09:48

We've got almost exactly what you describe but without the copper accessories. We love it. I was worried it would darken the room but the light worktops balance it out nicely. If you love it go for it.

TiramisuThief · 24/09/2024 09:49

I got a dark green kitchen installed last year & I absolutely love it.

Everything dates, just go with what you like.

If you play it safe because you're worried it just leads to very boring looking houses in beige - which also dates. So you may as well go with the colour you actually want.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/09/2024 09:53

We rented one house that had a light oak kitchen circa 1990 - but it was well built and planned and I actually grew to really like it. As others have said everything dates- but these days you can repaint some or change doors only-

Heard bad reports about Wren. Daughters fil works for major builder and they use Howden. He put theirs in, it's gloss sludge olive (sound horrendous), no handles stunning.

toomanyjobsforonewoman · 24/09/2024 10:04

Please check out the wren disasters Facebook page so you are fully informed before going with them. As to the forest green , it sounds beautiful and I would have a new kitchen this colour too if I had the money !

Darkfloods · 24/09/2024 10:07

The copper accents are the parts that are likely to date the fastest but they are easy to change.
I have a blue kitchen, yes it might date but I love it.

artictern · 24/09/2024 10:09

I think it sounds beautiful. If you go for the safe option you might equally regret it!

Saz12 · 24/09/2024 10:56

Honestly - yes, I think a strong definite colour will date faster than a more neutral one.
BUT everything will date eventually, maybe you like the colour so you won't care when it starts looking dated, maybe it just shouldn't matter - if you really like the colour then will you care if it looks old fashioned?

LoquaciousPineapple · 24/09/2024 13:34

We just had our kitchen resprayed and it was a really quick and easy process (for us, the sprayers worked hard!). So I wouldn't worry about what colour you choose now. It was expensive enough that we wouldn't do it regularly or on a whim but not so expensive that you couldn't afford it if you're comfortably off.

If you plan to sell in the near-mid future then I'd pick something safer but otherwise go for green!

OKherewegoagain · 24/09/2024 15:35

We have recently gone for the below, absolutely love it .

Forest green kitchen- will it date?

We've got a wren kitchen (put in by the previous owners) and it's falling to pieces, it can't cope with a busy family home.

As far as colour goes, if green is a long term favourite colour then definitely go for it. My aunt has had a blue kitchen that is so old it's gone out of fashion and back in again. But blue is her favourite colour so she's always loved it. If you like green because it's currently popular then you'll end up disliking it, probably having a door you can paint again is the safest option.

MissSkegness1951 · 24/09/2024 16:08

Depends if you plan to move at some point.

Coloured cabinets will either be moved or hates whereas coloured walls can easily be changed.

I would have neutral cabinets and then you can have forest green walls.

melissasummerfield · 24/09/2024 16:12

I have the exact colourway you described and we love it, fully aware it will date eventually but who cares!

scientificexplanations · 24/09/2024 16:27

It sounds lovely, who cares if it dates !! Aslong as you still love it that's all that matters doesn't it?

poppyzbrite4 · 24/09/2024 16:30

I wouldn't go with copper but I advise to choose something you love. You can always repaint.

Lonelycrab · 24/09/2024 16:53

My friend has a deep-ish green kitchen with teal/aquamarine tiles and dark granite coloured sink/taps, looks lovely.
