How old is your sofa?

We ordered a sofa from John Lewis 3.5 years ago and the seat cushions are very sinky already, one of them is a bit better than the other, but it's really putting pressure on my lower back now and I get achey from sitting on it. I thought £1k sofa should last a bit longer but do I just have unrealistic expectations? We're not large people, me and my husband, so I really wanted it to hold up a lot better.

One of mine has been with us for 12 years and was second hand when we got it, but had recently been reupholstered by the previous owners, and the other is 8 years old, cost us £450 in debenhams sale at the time, reduced from about £900, the cushions on that one have gone softer but the kids tend to jump on them which probably hasnt helped!

15 years old, £600ish leather from Next still in great condition

TheFluffiestCat · 03/09/2024 13:39

10 years. Bought it when we moved in. It's a bit squashed where DH sits but otherwise fine. Was about £1000 from DFS for the pair. I think we found the only weekend in the whole of the year that they didn't have a sale on!

Mine is about 5 years old, bought from Next clearance, a Hampshire sofa, for £450, original cost about £1k, I'm retired so probably sit on it more than average and have found recently it has become a bit saggy so I put a couple of old fleece throws folded up under the cushion and it has helped and boosted it up a bit. The cover fabric still looks in very good condition it's the cushion that is going, I do swap and turn the cushions as DH doesn't sit on his side as much. I'm not too bothered as it was very cheap but had I paid full price I would have been

12 years £800 large corner sofa.
Wrecked. I mean there's no rips but it could do with a wash and it's such an ugly brown/green colour. I hate it but I dont trust my children with a new one yet!

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 03/09/2024 13:41

12 years + and in great condition

PiggieWig · 03/09/2024 13:42

22 years old. Next fabric sofa. The cushions on the arms are a bit out of shape and the cat’s taken to scratching it, so it’s looking ready for replacement, but it’s not terrible by any stretch.

24 years .. we bought two fairly basic ones from MFI (remember them?!), our first DC was due and we thought we wouldn't spend a huge amount but 'upgrade' in a few years time ... we knew we wouldn't have another DC, we also have no pets ..
but we've never bothered to upgrade, covers are washable, I'm boringly just not into buying 'new' for the sake of it and the thought of trying to find something new, the delivery, getting rid of the old ones etc seems like a huge faff.

caringcarer · 03/09/2024 14:05

6 months old. The previous one was 8 years old, still fine but I was fed up with it and wanted a change. Gave it to a charity shop who collected.

13 years, they’re the Abbey range from M&S, bought with about 40% off. They’re in great condition, which is a shame in some ways, as I’d like to replace them and have a change, but can’t justify to myself.

longdistanceclaraclara · 03/09/2024 14:36

@ThinkingAgainAndAgain exactly the same! In perfect condition apart from the stains. Cream sofas and children do not mix.

Im not replacing until they need to be replaced (and the children can be trusted) so just use throws.

Ours are chestnut brown leather. Really dated now, but they’ve been ever so practical through the young kids years. I've just realised that they’re 15 years old, not 13.

15 years, John Lewis, very dark brown leather sofa.

Happy with it and no intention to get a new one.

muddyford · 03/09/2024 15:13

15 years, sky blue leather from local independent furniture retailer. Still gorgeous and would choose it again.

Ragwort · 03/09/2024 15:23

My sofa covers are cream ... easy enough to wash!

whiteroseredrose · 03/09/2024 15:28

We're currently using an inherited one from MIL. It was bought in the 1960s and is fully sprung rather than foam.

yikesanotherbooboo · 03/09/2024 15:32

We have six sofas (!) in total. Five of which are over eighteen years old and are all but one very comfortable still although one could do with new covers as it has been a favourite for tv watching and dogs. The uncomfortable one is a sofa bed from sofa workshop which has been uncomfortable from the day it was bought. Our other sofa is only about 10 or 12 years old and is immaculate still although it doesn't get the wear and tear.

veritasverity · 03/09/2024 15:38

About 20 years old, gave it a revamp six years ago with new cushions (ie seat cushions, not the little cushions) the revamped seats are definitely not as good as the original ones. But it's a lovely comfy big sofa! Hopefully with many more years in it....we did have a family of mice living in it, but they got evicted and haven't been back.

TeamPolin · 03/09/2024 15:48

8 years ago. Still got plenty of spring in it but fabric is torn in a couple of areas and we're using throws to protect it.

alwaysnapping · 03/09/2024 15:51

5 years, from Laura Ashley so won’t be able to replace when it comes to it. Still in brilliant condition.

Sheelanogig · 03/09/2024 15:52

20 yrs old but we did have it reupholstered
and stuffing added about 3 years ago.

housemaus · 03/09/2024 15:57

15 years (well, 2 years for us - they were a family member's for 13 years before that) - could do with reupholstering but they're fine and comfy.

cliplidpot · 03/09/2024 15:57

You can always have your sofa seat cushions and backs restuffed, have a google for a local company. It would probably be cheaper than buying a new one.

Ours is 7 years olds and the cushions are the same as when we bought them. They have ever so slightly faded where they have been sat on bum wise. They are G Plan so not cheap in the slightest and to be honest they are grey and I am bored shitless of the colour but it seems wasteful to replace them as it would be £5k. They are electric recliners and a dream to sit on.

DogInATent · 03/09/2024 16:01

>15years, but it's been recovered once (or maybe twice? I'd need to check xmas photos) and the frame straps tightened. Is it a saggy foam cushion, or is it the elasticated frame straps that support the cushions giving? Cushion foam can be replaced as can frame straps.

RuthW · 03/09/2024 16:06

25 years old. Leather from Argos. The seats were recovered 4 years ago. Still looks good.
