I am renovating this cottage for holiday lets. The red oven is quite over powering but im trying to avoid replacing it just yet.

I think the red and yellow looks dated but the paintwork is very new. Considering repairs ing the cupboards?

Any ideas?

This has me a bit stumped because I like the units and the red, also like the yellow with the red but I don’t like all 3 together. Also the white ceiling and tiles make the units look very creamy.

I wouldn’t change the units. Perhaps try a china blue colour on the walls and maybe change the door knobs on the units to black.

I think the white tiles look out of place in the photosbut for a holiday cottage they are clean and fresh looking.

Not sure if black or white small appliances would look better than red. Just leave the red cooker.

LaWench · 28/05/2024 21:37

Change the knobs to nickel or steel. Paint the walls to a neutral off white like F&B school house white. The yellow is too much with the red and black imo.

It is isn't it. It's the first thing anyone told me to get rid of though I feel guilty because it's new.

I think changing the appliances would be easy but make the red cooker stand out even more but thank you

Put the cups away or have a tree. Even stacked up in counter in a tub would look better (... and I have hooks for my mugs!)

Paint the walls more neutral colour - white with a hint of ...

Could you put fake tongue and grove over the tiles and paint that a deeper shade of the walls?

Is that a picture on the cooker? If it is presume it's not permanent ?

Accessories maybe a toned down red? Pink? Copper? And think about the taps, sockets and handles/knobs, table cloths, curtains and blinds and lean in (but not matchy matchy! )

Plants (prob fake if it's a let), from the top of the cupboards.

Not sure what your other walls are like but maybe do a (small) mplate wall or picture wall?

The red looks dated, but is dominant. You can get stove paint or have the doors professionally repainted . Could that be an option?

Have a look on Pinterest /buy one of the cheaper mags - House Beautiful. Take a look on Instagram - some one like Lisa Dawson .

Bankholidayhelp · 29/05/2024 09:41

Just looked at the pic again - plants on the shelf as obviously no space on cupboards!

Lisa Dawson is great for shelf styling/wall art.

It's way off my own preferences, but as a holiday let I think it's fine. You won't suit all tastes and so long as it's in good condition and clean I would be really happy with that.

Walkthelakes · 29/05/2024 09:51

I think the fundamentals are all fine…I would go for a nuetral on the wall to make more modern (I love b n q Cancun). I think that would make a big difference without spending lots. Then maybe update plants, accessories, pictures and blind to make fresh

Walkthelakes · 29/05/2024 09:53

Also cream for toaster and kettle. Wood breadbin. Not too matching but cute cottage vibe

GiantHornets · 29/05/2024 09:57

I don’t think you need to do anything, it looks clean and functional.
i certainly would not replace working small appliances with a different colour just for appearance in a holiday let. Complete waste of money never mind the environmental issues

Olive green walls would offset the red.

Fraaahnces · 29/05/2024 10:05

I hate the red and yellow together. I would probably repaint (pale blue would be better) and throw in some retro tea towels, etc to add a “vibe” That or maybe a black and white theme.

I think a green would be good. Something like Teresa's green from farrow and ball?

LifeofBrienne · 29/05/2024 10:23

I like the red but the pastel yellow walls are a weird colour combination choice. I’d repaint neutral and add maybe a picture or tea towels in a retro style with some red to link in. Nothing drastic needed IMO.

Jeezitneverends · 29/05/2024 11:04

It’s definitely the yellow that’s throwing the colour scheme against the red, it needs a soft white(not brilliant white) and as a PP has said, lose the mug hooks-it makes it look so cluttered…or get rid of the red oven (I know this isn’t your preferred option) and you can keep the yellow and go more country kitchen style, depending on the res5 of the cottage’s style

We have a ton of leftover sage olive kind of green from our house which is kitchen paint I was thinking of using it up. It's this. I was thinking the green would bring down the red and maybe I could find a nice print set with Holly berries or something to acknowledge the red and green

Me too it's so jarring but it was my late mum's house and she loved bright primary colours she always chose that pallete hence my guilt but I have to make this work as a business.

The yellow on its own is really cheerful and energising - I would keep it if I could ditch the red.

The mug hooks are rammed into the bottom of the cupboards which are made of mdf else I would of course fill and sand and paint over. I hate them the holes are so uneven!!!! I bought the mugs from tragos to see how the white would look against the rest. They are nice but I'm not married to them

Rest of the house - lounge is a mint/pale sage green with white stone fire place and log burner and some dark wood shelving it's quite nice and I will go cream/neutral sofas and curtains.

Bathroom I have renovated its brand new metro tiled with a grey grout I love it.

Bedroom is pale blue and softer blue carpet and navy curtains. The best room so far and was easy to style although I would have preferred white walls.

The yellow goes right up the stairs on to the upper landing with white bannisters but without the red it looks quite fresh and the natural light up there is much better so it's quite pretty.

It's a tiny stone cottage on a river so hoping it will work well as a holiday let.

How do you feel about the olive green above? It would tie in with the blue and the sage green. Looks great with dark wood. You could probably bring in a deeper version behind the stove and that would potentially tone down the redness. With wood, red, green and white you could get a Skandi vibe.

I found a picture of a red oven against a similar green - cabinets rather than walls - I do wonder though if your green would make the whole kitchen rather dark - you need to scroll down a bit to find it?https://www.bestonlinecabinets.com/blog/best-scandinavian-kitchen-design-ideas-for-2020/

Duck egg blue tends to look good with red although might be a bit Cath Kidstonish if you don't like that vibe.

Paint the walls a neutral colour and change the tiles to cream, so everything is neutral except the oven. Definitely don’t change a perfectly good oven in a rental because of the colour.
