Dulux Help- 50 shades of white!

We've recently moved into a 1970s house with East and West facing windows. It's quite sunny (other than in the hallway). It's currently all covered in a yellowy magnolia.

The living room area is mostly open plan, with East windows in the living room and West facing windows in the kitchen/dining and second sitting area.
I am really struggling with picking the right shade of white! We want something neutral, fresh and not magnolia. I read previous threads and got some suggested test pots.

So far we've tried (all Dulux- can't really stretch to F&B and such)
Timeless- my favourite, but I am worried it will look a bit boring?
Jasmine white: DH says it looks a bit green
Cotton White- Looks cool to me, a bit bluey
Rock Salt- I don't like it, it's too grey
Cornflower white- well that's just light blue to me
Fine cream- looks like a pure white with a drop of yellow, actually very pleasant and DH favourite, but I worry it will look neon in bright sun
Summer linen- I like it, DH thinks it might just look like an old paint!

I also really love Nutmeg White which is a cool greige, I'd do the very sunny dining area in it with rest in timeless, but DH thinks it's too dark!
Otherwise I'd paint it all Timeless and DH would do it all in Fine Cream.

Have any of you used any of those paints in W/E rooms? I just keep coming back to Timeless... sorry for a long post!

I’ve recently done my E/W hallway in timeless. I really like it. Not stark like brilliant white, more a nice light creamy colour. I’ve also just painted my bedroom in it too.

marriednotdead · 21/04/2024 13:34

Another Timeless fan here, I have it in my bedroom and it just doesn’t date or feel too ‘in your face‘ white.

TheFairyCaravan · 21/04/2024 13:36

If you want Farrow and Ball colours, B&Q will mix their Valspar paint to match it.

ShrubRose · 21/04/2024 14:05

Just esthetically, my preference would be Fine Cream. It has a warmth that I think you will appreciate in winter, especially in the West-facing areas.

Timeless and Jasmine White look similar, and both have a sort of taupe-y undertone that I don't personally care for. Nutmeg is a bit darker, and has a pink undertone, which would be tricky with certain colours.
Colour is very personal! Good luck choosing.

I saw summer linen on Instagram somewhere and it looked lovely
Will see if I can find it

My old flat was all fine cream. Bedroom was very dark at all times due to massive tree. Kitchen and living room bright and in the summer sun both rooms were dazzlingly bright. The colour looked lovely all year round in all rooms. Not neon at all in high sun.

FondOfOwls · 21/04/2024 15:00

@pelotonaddiction thank you, I do like it, don't think DH is convinced. I have the tester for it so I will put it on a piece of paper and move it around at different times.

@themanwhobroketneworld I think Fine cream would be amazing in our dingy hall but I feel hesitant to put it where there's lots of light. We had pure white in a bright room before and that felt a bit stark too.

Timeless for me too. I was in your position and went through a lot of white tester pots until my eyes and brain hurt. Have ended up doing virtually every room in Timeless. Looks great. No regrets

NigelHarmansNewWife · 21/04/2024 15:08

Timeless has a slight brown undertone. Cotton White a slight grey one, it's definitely on the cool side.

FondOfOwls · 21/04/2024 15:09

@TimeToStopLurking looks a lot like my dilemma. I think we're likely going to choose between Fine Cream and Timeless. If we go FC we could use it in the dingy hallway too, if we go with Timeless I will have to find some magic light reflecting paint for the hallway!

Just to chuck another option into the mix, have you considered Dulux Heritage? We have Alabaster white from that range in our East West facing rooms and it's lovely. You can only get it at Dulux decorator centres I think, unfortunately, but there are plenty around.

Lucylaughing · 21/04/2024 15:15

We have timeless in our lounge and I love it. It's usually quite a dark room and it makes it feel cosy because of the warm undertone.

We have jasmine white throughout our hall, stairs and landing (3 floors). It looks different in every location, but has a cool undertone and it looks fresh and clean without being at all clinical.

Took us ages to choose the whites as well as it's so hard. I don't think you would regret timeless. It would be my go to neutral now.

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 21/04/2024 15:15

Timeless is nice.

This is one of those decisions it isn't worth spending time on!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 21/04/2024 15:17

To warm up a dingy hallway, don't go light and bright, instead pick a "muddy" version of a colour, e.g. a mustardy yellow instead of a bright one. Or embrace the darkness and go dark and cosy with better lighting and a mirror or other light reflecting elements.

MrsWhattery · 21/04/2024 15:19

Timeless all the way! It's definitely a white/very slightly off-white, not really cream - you walk in and you see a white room. But it feels warm and kind of soothing and glowing, especially in sunlight. It goes with every other colour/item of furniture/flooring etc. too, which makes me thing the undertones must be fairly neutral, but it's not greyish.

I tested cotton white for the same room and it looked much more grey compared to timeless.

MrsWhattery · 21/04/2024 15:24

I'm not sure I agree... now I've found Timeless I know I like it, but I've made "it's white what could possibly go wrong" mistakes in the past. One had a weird peach undertone that I tried to ignore but really bugged me (I think it was called pale mocha though that was a v misleading name as it was a white). I also thought Apple White would be nice but it was too cold and clinical-feeling for me.

kittybloom · 21/04/2024 15:26

I always do Timeless in the bathrooms and if you like that then I'd recommend Natural Calico (which was recommended on here)

Sunnnybunny72 · 21/04/2024 15:34

We have summer linen in most rooms. Love it.

Catlover1705 · 21/04/2024 15:39

Love nutmeg white, it's my absolute favourite. Its bright but warm and goes with everything

themanwhobroketneworld · 21/04/2024 16:23

The Fine Cream didn’t look at all cold/stark or glaring in my kitchen and living room which were ridiculously bright on sunny afternoons.

I used that in a hall once and it looked salmon pink on the walls with natural light in there. It was rapidly re-painted a different, more neutral colour!

FondOfOwls · 21/04/2024 16:30

Ooh I LOVE nutmeg white, unfortunately DH not too keen. I would not mind it pulling pink, we had a pink hallway before and it was fab.

I read somewhere here that natural calico is a fancy magnolia! I better not get a tester in case it's DHs favourite 😆

DD1 decided she wants a wall in Pretty Pink, any idea which one would look better with it, Timeless or Fine cream? We won't do all walls in pink for her (to her dismay) as I don't fancy repainting it in a couple of years in case she hates pink. I think Dulux website even suggests pairing it with Timeless.

What about Almond White? I've just put a swatch on the wall and it looks a bit brighter and less grey than Timeless, but from the other angle looks darker than Timeless and beige!
It almost looks like a lighter Summer Linen?
Has anyone had Almond White??

We have nutmeg white in our living amd dining rooms and I think it's beautiful. Not fully open plan, but patio doors one end and windows the other so get both morning and evening sun, looks different every angle depending on if its in the light or not.
Have Rock salt in daughters bedroom (painted when it was a spare room) and it's very pale. I don't think I'd choose it again.
Also have jasmine white (I think) in our bathroom and it's very blue.
