What’s wrong with our newly plastered & painted walls?

Any decorators/experts about?

I’ve attached pictures of said problem. Walls were re plastered a few months ago. We did a mist coat last week & have now given it x2 coats of white emulsion.

When standing face on, the stripes are not visible but when walking along the hall, towards the room, all you can see are these bloody horrendous stripes on the wall. The sunlight directly on the wall is obviously highlighting the problem. The other 3 walls look absolutely fine. And like I said, when directly facing the wall, the stripes are not visible. But it’s soooooo bloody obvious when you’re walking towards the room.

So my query is; is it the plaster? The mist coat? The emulsion?

We’ve not scrimped on materials or rushed the job.

Is there any way of improving it?

Thank you to anyone who replies! (in the meantime I’m off to pour a large G&T 😩)

Does it look any better now it’s fully dry?

GenghisCalm · 14/04/2024 15:55

Are the line the same width as you roller?

AnotherCF · 14/04/2024 16:30

It looks like too much paint on the roller and it's the edges of the roller. Try the w method.

maldivemoment · 14/04/2024 18:37

Thank you folks. Really appreciate the replies.

Looks just the same now it’s dry. 😩

Yes, lines match up with the width of the roller but weird that it’s not visible on the other 3 walls.

Could we do a 3rd coat using the ‘w’ method? (Off the google the ‘w’ method! 😬)

I think you just need more coats of paint!

umberelladay · 14/04/2024 18:44

It's about how you apply the paint, you need a wet edge, you need to work before anything dries. Even coverage .

I did the same, I had to google how to apply paint 🙄😁 it was only visible on my very long hallway..one wall only.

WonderingWanda · 14/04/2024 18:54

That's a paint issue, is it silk emulsion rather than matt? I always think silk is worse for marks like that. Also happens more with thinner paint. Don't press too hard with the roller to spead the paint too thin.

Scarletttulips · 14/04/2024 18:56

Does look like silk, which won’t help.

maldivemoment · 14/04/2024 19:41

😬

Not Silk. It’s this

Apologies if this is not the case, but it looks like you've basically rollered up and down in straight lines. This is not how to apply paint. As a pp poster said, google W method.

maldivemoment · 14/04/2024 19:51

@Greywitch2 😆 “this is not how to apply paint…”

Cheeesus · 14/04/2024 19:51

I tend to do up and down and then a bit of sideways too. Maybe try that.

maldivemoment · 14/04/2024 19:51

I appreciate your ‘straight-to-the-point’ advice 👍🏻

Greywitch2 · 14/04/2024 19:54

@maldivemoment 😁Sorry - didn't mean to be rude or abrupt!

I was just trying to be clear that you don't roller emulsion on in straight up and down lines. Or you get lines...

Pigeonqueen · 14/04/2024 19:54

Yeah that’s to do with the distribution of the paint on the roller. Personally that’s why I actually don’t like using rollers, I find them messy and feel I get a better finish just using a good quality paint brush. When you factor in the faff and cleaning using rollers I don’t find it takes longer either. Do another coat with a good brush going up and down and then side to side and it should be fine. (Renovated several houses, done all the decorating myself).

Nosleepforthismum · 14/04/2024 19:55

Lightly sand it back and repaint. Google how to paint properly. All fixable OP don’t worry 🙂

alwaysmovingforwards · 14/04/2024 19:56

Vertical roller stripes.

You need to W that wall!

maldivemoment · 14/04/2024 19:56

@Greywitch2 not rude or abrupt at all.

I need folk to be direct & to-the-point, so thank you. 👍🏻

Ngl I’ve been googling how to paint fresh plaster for weeks and this is the first time I’ve heard of the w method or the wrong way to roller.

You’re not alone, OP.

maldivemoment · 14/04/2024 19:57

These are great! Thank you!

@Nosleepforthismum “Google how to paint properly…” 😆

This is getting embarrassing! 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

Rantypanties · 14/04/2024 19:59

I did 2 mist coats when painting our freshly painted walls and ceiling…then 4 coats of paint cause the plaster kept sucking up the paint! We did have a problem with our walls though so you may not need quite that many. I even lightly sanded between final mist coat and first coat of paint.

i have seen on insta a lot of painters still water down their emulsion a little when painting the first coat. It might help with the lines?!

You used a brilliant finish which is usually reserved for woodwork or bathrooms. This will really show all your mistakes because it has a high shine.
If you had used silk or eggshell finish you might not have noticed your brushstrokes so much. It will probably need another 2 coats where you CROSS YOUR BRUSHSTROKES. Good luck OP. It will all work out in the end. Consider it part of the learning process.

As a consolation, it is a good thing you chose white which will give you extra light with all the reflection reverberating throughout.

Whataretalkingabout · 14/04/2024 20:38

I just noticed your paint pot. How very odd they put both Matt and brilliant on the same canister!! That is very misleading. It says contract Matt ( probably referring to the finish) and brilliant white (probably referring to the color tone).
So maybe it is a Matt finish ? Impossible to tell from here to be honest.

maldivemoment · 14/04/2024 23:34

@Whataretalkingabout from your advice I’m assuming you’re an expert?

We thought it was Matt, & certainly appears ti be a Matt finish. (Except for those bloody stripes! )
