Dd wants a red bedroom.

Dd is only 4.5 but red is her favourite colour, no surprise she's asked to have a red bedroom when we decorate later in the year. I'm rubbish at decorating and styling rooms. I also hate red 😂 most of our other rooms are pale or pastel colours. Our house is quite light and airy so I think the room could take red, but how do I do it nicely?

I'm thinking one wall red and the rest a neutral colour. But would white be best or a different neutral? I'd like the room to feel as light and as big as possible.

It's NE facing and has quite light wooden flooring, which won't be changing. Can someone suggest a shade of red and a neutral colour to go with it?

Ds’s room has 1 red wall and 3 light grey walls.

The red is a blood red colour by Leyland, I can’t remember the name sorry.

nbee84 · 30/03/2024 18:46

I'd go with all neutral walls and red bedding and accessories.

loveulotslikejellytots · 30/03/2024 18:48

@Muchtoomuchtodo that's what I'm thinking.

@nbee84 unfortunately dd wants as much red as possible 😂 she's already got paw patrol and spidey bedding which is red and red storage boxes so I think she's really going for as much red as possible.

@loveulotslikejellytots a red rug, red curtains and duvet cover will make it pretty red and then you can easily tone it down if (when) she’s not into red quite as much!

Insidelaurashead · 30/03/2024 19:01

Have you seen the trend where you paint halfway up the wall in colour and lave the top half white? I'd be tempted to do that

NuffSaidSam · 30/03/2024 19:04

I'd also go for white/neutral walls and loads of red accessories. You could get some wall stickers if she wants red on the walls too. Much easier for when she decides her favourite colour is green now.

Marblessolveeverything · 30/03/2024 19:08

I'd embrace it and go for a rich red wallpaper. A lot easier to change than red paint.

bebeenjoysthetheatre · 30/03/2024 19:09

I'd go with a neural wall or a light pink and then a scalloped red border on the room. Then red accessories around the room like a red strawberry cushion, a red throw, red frames for wall art etc.

I'd go with all neutral walls and red bedding and accessories.

Red is the colour of energy. Steer clear of it on the wall(s). Bedrooms need to be restful but red accessories are a good idea.

Don't paint anywhere red. If you must (well, if she insists), put up some red wallpaper, as it's a bastard to paint over. Otherwise, have your neutral walls, curtains and carpet/flooring, but add red accents in a rug, lampshade, small red detail on the bedding or plain white and a blanket and random things like pictures with red (and green, you need the green as well - so things like roses) in them.

Would she accept a red stripe?

My bedroom is red and I love it. Red walls with dark oak picture rail, skirting & door. Looks great and it's really cosy.

loveulotslikejellytots · 30/03/2024 19:27

Some really good ideas, thank you. I might look at paper instead, I hadn't thought about the potential problems painting over it.

She's picked out wall stickers already, but I wonder if I can steer her towards just red accessories instead.

Not sure what neutral colour to paint the room now though.

My daughter was exactly the same at 3.5, desperate for a red bedroom. I managed to talk her down to a dusky pink, it's still bold but a little less bright. Think it was cinder rose, farrow and ball.

She absolutely loves spidey too!

We have a red lounge , used Dulux roasted red, it's kind of muted for a red . Not all reds are vibrant.

Ketzele · 30/03/2024 19:36

Not white! I hate white and red together. Perhaps a warm neutral, or a plaster pink?

We had Dulux Egyptian Cotton on the walls during DD's Red Era. It went really well with pure white, greens and blues as well.

Mrssheepskin · 30/03/2024 19:46

We had a red bedroom when we first moved into our house and it took at least 3 coats to cover. Also made the room feel smaller and definitely didn’t feel like a restful place. I wouldn’t recommend it! Yes to those peelable wall stickers - I’m sure she might change her mind to another theme soon enough!
I would also go for neutral walls and lots of red accessories/ a red bulb or light or something?

Surroundedbyfools · 30/03/2024 19:56

What about white/cream walls and one wall you could stencil red hearts ? Red bedding, red curtains ? Then it’s easy to change it when she doesn’t want it anymore ? I once had a red and cream bedroom. One walk was a deep red rose floral wallpaper and the rest cream I loved it !

In a fit of madness in the 70’s my mother allowed my DB to paint his own room age 15. He chose red and white. He did stripes on the walls, but then he painted the window sills and skirtings bright red.

She said he never slept well, it was too stimulating and she had to change all of the woodwork. Negotiation is the way forward, a new skill for your DD, give what you can without giving in.

PrimalLass · 30/03/2024 19:56

You can get nice reds that are more blue toned. We had Dulux Ruby Starlet on the chimney breast for a while and it was lovely.

DrJoanAllenby · 30/03/2024 20:00

This is a touch of red that might be a compromise

Something like this? I had red and white polka dot paper as a child and I loved it!

Thank you for all the ideas, dd is really into paw patrol, spidey and Arsenal. Hearts and flowers are really not her thing... at all!

Just talking to DH now and he agrees that more neutral than colour is definitely the way forwards. She's picked out some wall stickers which could fill the main wall if placed right so we might be able to get away without painting anything red!

These are wall stickers which would be an easy option?
