Dd wants a red bedroom.

Dd is only 4.5 but red is her favourite colour, no surprise she's asked to have a red bedroom when we decorate later in the year. I'm rubbish at decorating and styling rooms. I also hate red 😂 most of our other rooms are pale or pastel colours. Our house is quite light and airy so I think the room could take red, but how do I do it nicely?

I'm thinking one wall red and the rest a neutral colour. But would white be best or a different neutral? I'd like the room to feel as light and as big as possible.

It's NE facing and has quite light wooden flooring, which won't be changing. Can someone suggest a shade of red and a neutral colour to go with it?

I'd only paint lining paper red, that will be easier to change. How about big wooden letters that spell out RED with a bigger wooden red heart at each end? Or her name in red? Try Etsy.

I had red curtains and a red light bulb as a child. Thinking back it was a bit Amsterdam 😂

@justasking111 is that the look you were going for 😂.

Reminds me of when my DD was 4 and asked for a 'black' bedroom 🤣 Luckily we managed to gently dissuade her from that one.

confuseeedd · 30/03/2024 23:03

I would go easy on the paint/wallpaper and perhaps just have a red feature wall.

Then go mad with accessories, rug, curtains, cushions, bedding, decorative bits etc.

All red walls could feel very dark and closed in especially with all the other red stuff.

Pale pink and red looks lovely together

Can't you just get her red bedding and curtains and maybe some pictures on the wall with a lot of red? But keep the room neutral? Then if she changes her mind in a year or two it's not too hard to change it!
My DD loved pink at that age and we let her choose a pink carpet which I did regret because she didn't like it after a couple of years because it was "babyish"!

Red is great. All of my kids had or have red walls at some point - why do you think pink would be better? Do a red wall and the rest white or cream - it'll look amazing. And it's not awful to paint over when tastes change unlike stripping wallpaper which is a hideous job.

PeanutJellyAndButter · 30/03/2024 23:28

These could look nice and not completely overwhelming

unfortunately dd wants as much red as possible 😂

She's 4. Green will be her favourite colour next week. And anyway, at 4, she doesn't get to choose!

I’d go for hints of red with accessories rather than go the full hog.

eg white walls (or one wall red) with red lampshade, red rug, red cushions.

My dc have had all colours in their bedroom, dc went from blue to grey to black, to white then grey again! Painting over it was fine, use a mid grey to paint over heavy colours as it blocks colour coming through. I've repainted a navy hallway to white and painted over a full wall mural using grey basecoats and it was fine this way.

We move house on Friday and my five year old really wants her walls red too! Her new room is tiny so really can’t take it. My mother has offered her some red curtains which I really, really don’t like because they look far too adult for a child’s room (and I also wish she’d leave it to me because we have been in a complicated housing situation for the past three years and I am desperate to start building a home again), so I was considering the lower half red and the upper a paler colour.

Josette77 · 30/03/2024 23:50

Red is my least favourite colour but ds's favourite.

It has a vintage feel to it though so I used it as a neutral almost and paired it with every other colour. Not everywhere but I found colourful art looked gorgeous on it and you can do a vintage cirque du soleil type theme.

Our bedroom is Pugin Red by Dulux. Cream ceiling and woodwork and curtains, natural wood floor and furniture. It's fab!

No she doesn't get final say, if she'd chosen black or a random colour maybe not. But she's 4 (nearly 5) anything she can choose is red, her scooter, her bike, most of the clothes she chooses are red. So I think we're good for at least a few years. She's listening to her big sister choosing things for her room and wants to do the same.

Red isn't my favourite colour but it is hers, and we'll make it work.

I’d go for it. Returning it to neutral in a few years time just means a couple extra coats of paint.

My plans for a whole house colour scheme of complimentary shades came a cropper on my dc’s awful taste! But they’re only little for a short while.

AbsolCatly · 31/03/2024 07:49

Go for the red - we did 1 wall bright red, can't remember the shade, and the others in a pastel yellow (east facing room), son has enjoyed it for the past 9 years and now looking at changing it

It may be your house but it is her room and why not embrace the fun colours?

If you really can't then why not get some large and differently sized canvas's and paint them red and hang them on the wall framed by your backdrop colour - or pin up some red fabric ? Both of those could be taken down and changed easily and think of the fun she could have helping you paint :)

Over 30 years ago my parents let me have a lime green, bright purple bedroom, lava lamp, sparkly lampshade and bang on the door bedding. It brought me so much joy. Their house was very 'luxe country chic' - I still have fond memories. The joy will outweigh the hassle of a bif of re-painting one day

hendoop · 31/03/2024 08:30

DDs room she is 12 and loves it - took 5 coats the decorator said but I love it and so does she

The is 100% why I decided to do it, this is her space and she does keep her room tidy etc

Install the Dulux colour visualiser app on your phone and "virtually" paint the walls.

DS had a red and grey bedroom for a few years. He was into Lightning McQueen and we managed to persuade him just to have the red on the wall opposite his window which worked well as it was a long narrow room and brought the wall in .

When painting over it we just used a couple of coats of brilliant white emulsion.
