Squishy, well made sofas that keep their shape!

After a couple of dud sofa purchases over the past few years (money down the drain), I've decided we probably need to spend a little bit more for long term gain!

I'd like 2 comfy sofas that you can sink into but with cushions that hold their shape - so they don't look saggy after a couple of months.

It's a bonus if they are easy to clean and the covers can be removed.

Does anyone own a sofa that matches this description and can make a recommendation?

Thank you!

Sorry, I'm here forthe answer to the great sofa dilemma!!

NisekoWhistler · 24/03/2024 15:47

Does the Togo from Ligne Roset float your boat?

EwwSprouts · 24/03/2024 15:48

Watching with interest.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 24/03/2024 15:51

Sofas and stuff are excellent and made in the UK.

ginandoreos · 24/03/2024 17:54

@NisekoWhistler that does look incredibly comfy but I'm after something slightly more formal with (short) legs! Thank you

@BloodyHellKenAgain they look very comfy - if they keep their shape they would definitely be a good investment. Would definitely need to get saving for a while first! Thank you,

We've had a cricket sofa from Sofology for about 6 years. Not too pricey, it's kept it's shape brilliantly and nothing has left marks on it - red wine, curry, mud, grease have all wiped off it. Genuinely the best sofa we've had and really comfy.

tetrad do classic sofas and if you getca sprung base theres no cushion plumping required. Im sitting on one now ive had for over 15 years - just have loads of scatter cushions at the back.

Wishthiswasntmypost · 24/03/2024 18:41

Here for the advice! I'd like something that tolerates dogs, toddlers and accident prone ...erm me

MadamVastra · 24/03/2024 18:42

I love my duresta! Was expensive but it has lasted so well and still looks brand new

I can put a pic if you like

Kleavers · 24/03/2024 18:58

We've got Natuzzi. Incredibly comfy and look like new after 3 years

ginandoreos · 24/03/2024 19:25

@Jayinthetub Ooh yes - I like this one, thank you!

@bilbodog This is fab too! I really like the style. Is it quite firm or does the spring base mean you can 'sink in' to it to an extent? Thanks

OP posts:
ginandoreos · 24/03/2024 19:28

@MadamVastra Yes please, if you don't mind! Just had a quick google for Duresta - the link took me to Furniture Village but then showed me other brands.

Ours has kept its shape and so has our friends. Admittedly they are pricey, though we're planning on it lasting as long as we do now 😂

ginandoreos · 24/03/2024 19:33

@Kleavers Ahh yes I have heard of Natuzzi, they have so many beautiful styles. Another brand I'd need to save up for but worth the investment, I imagine. Probs not this one though...😄

Not exactly squishy but surprisingly well made and has lasted us years with a dog and now a very messy and active 18 month old - IKEA Friheten 3 seater (not the L shape) with a lovely cream linen sofa cover from Comfort Works. The sofa seems to never age and the cover is amazing. It washes and dries beautifully so we never have to worry about spills or paw marks.

ginandoreos · 24/03/2024 19:34

@BloodyHellKenAgain Just heading back for a more thorough look! Thanks - they sound great 👍🏼

ginandoreos · 24/03/2024 19:47

@MyLovelyLily Ooh that's an interesting idea to get a cover from elsewhere. My current sofa is Ikea and it looks terrible so initially I'm avoiding them! Your sofa does look good though - I quickly googled and found the L-shape and a sofa bed version. I live close to an Ikea so might pop in and give them another chance 😂. I'm after the squish factor that they have yet to provide me with...

Duresta or Tetrad are your best bet. Family members have them and they're so comfy and still look so good a decade on. Just go for a timeless fabric.

HesterPrincess · 24/03/2024 20:03

Try a local upholsterer who makes their own stuff so you're not paying a retail mark up. You want a beech frame, proper metal spring unit and it'll last decades. For comfy cushions, go for fibre (look like feather but is like pillow inners) or soft foam core with a fibre or feather wrap.
Lots of fabric manufacturers now make stain resistant fabrics - Linwood Omega is one of the best velvets out there, Warwick do several Fibreguard lines which stop stains going in and are cleanable with water. Same with Wemyss, Kobe, even Osborne and Little.

In the trade in case you didn't realise Grin
If budget is tight, find Duresta/Tetrad/Multiyork second hand and pay to have it recovered.

ginandoreos · 24/03/2024 20:27

@HesterPrincess @dottypencilcase thank you - it's great to know the brands that are the cream of the crop.
I'll keep looking. Will either have to do a bit of saving or might be lucky if something second hand crops up.

Sorry - I'm a bit clueless - if I was to go to an upholsterer, would I already have needed to purchase a sofa for them to upholster?

It's good to know about the best fabrics - I'm after something hardwearing but comfortable in a neutral colour (I think).

As an aside I'm going to paint the living room F&B card room green so if anyone has any colour suggestions they would be grateful recurved!

We got ours from Sofology & its great - very comfy and keeps its shape. Only had it a year though, so can't comment on how long it'll stay this way!

HesterPrincess · 24/03/2024 20:42

Lots of upholsterers make their own furniture as well as recovering other stuff. They may have a small shop or workshop that they display it in. But they'll be a lot better value for money than someone with a huge unit on a retail park.

Inyourwildestdreams · 24/03/2024 20:52

We have 2 Isla sofas and an armchair from sofa.com
Admittedly we’ve only had them 2 years but we have young children who are not easy on the furniture and everything looks perfect 😊 They do get slouchy looking as they’re sat on and played on but a quick 10 second plump of the back cushions and they look brand new again (which I actually quite enjoy as it’s very satisfying to refresh the place once the kids are in bed 😂)
