Is this salvageable?

Or a return job?

We can't have our blinds inside the recess as our windows are tilt and turn. So they have to be outside. The blind does cover the window (just) but from the doorway looking side on there is a huge gap. They won't be black out at all either due to it. It's one sided material the other side is just grey so can't flip it around to roll other way, we did try.

It's not right is it? Part of me is wondering if I make do because the colour is spot on for what I want, but I don't want to regret it.

Oh this would drive me mad! I sleep best in full darkness.

I'd have to replace it with a thick curtain, and extend the rail further either side with extra room so that the curtain bunches. maybe a curtain track from silent gloss or similar, but with a very tight gap to the wall. If you don't have coving you could also have it drop fully from the ceiling but that depends on your preferred window treatment. Love the look and colour scheme!

indecisivie · 06/11/2023 21:07

It's my sons room, so he does need it to be quite dark really. I'm hesitant to go for curtains because the heater means they'd need to be quite cropped and I prefer the look of longer curtains! It's taken me forever to decide on this and I'm so annoyed it's not quite right!

If you take the blind down and re-roll it the other way (so it's like the one in this picture), the blind will sit closer to the window.

We did try, it's only one sided fabric so the top roll was just grey and plasticky rather than the nice colour material so it didn't look great Sad

You got the wrong type of blinds. For over the top and not recess you need a Roman blind, rather than roller

TheCompactPussycat · 06/11/2023 21:14

Sorry - can't help with the current problem but next time you need to look for something like these. They are suitable for tilt and turn windows. We have then on our patio doors.

What about rolling it but putting a small pelmet box over the top so it covers the rolled up bit?

stickypoint · 06/11/2023 21:15

If the issue is sleep for little one, could you put some black card over the parts of the window that are closest to his crib and see if that helps in the interim? Short term low cost solution.

We used window film to create privacy, you can get lots of different types now if you want something nicer and they do make the difference. That way you keep the nice blind.

But agree with long curtains. Just had mine cropped to free up the radiator but it's a 200cm drop so still feels ok.

indecisivie · 06/11/2023 21:22

I can return them the colour is just spot on and Dunelm don't make this blind as a Roman blind! I'll see if I can find a Roman one that might work better.. if not I'll look at pelmets thanks!

Rather than rolling the other way, can you swap the end bits?

Explain please. I'm lost 😂

I think if you completely unroll, then swap over the white plastic bits that are pushed into the roll itself, that should mean it rolls back the way you want.

indecisivie · 06/11/2023 21:36

Whilst I have you all here, we fitted blinds throughout the upstairs today and I'm unsure on these ones as well. They aren't as gappy as the blind in my sons room, as these are Roman, but there is just something I'm not sure of. Does it just need some things on the wall either side, add a bit of colour, or is this a return jobby too?

You could use 'fake' curtains? So hang full lenth curtains and just don't close them - the curtains would cover that gap each side and make it look cosy too.

PlipPlopChoo · 06/11/2023 21:53

Can you paint the windows black in the summer? In the winter the gap should not matter too much because its really dark at night anyway.

parietal · 06/11/2023 22:44

for the second picture of the roman blinds, put some pictures up on the wall. that will make everything look better.

for the child's window, if you roll the blind all the way down and then keep rolling, the mechanism should start to roll it up on the other side of the roller. keep going and you'll have a blind that is closer to the wall. you may find the piece-that-joins-the-chain blocks the chain after a while, but it is possible to adjust that.

hoobanoobie · 07/11/2023 00:42

I had this problem. I bought a gro blackout blind, removed the sucker attachments and cut it into measured strips to fit tucked around the outside edges of the ill fitting blind, attached to the wall with sticky velcro strips. One blind cut up served three windows. It works.

GetWhatYouWant · 07/11/2023 01:02

I think your problem with both lots of blinds is that they're too narrow. That not only allows light in at the sides but looks a bit skimpy and odd too, because they are narrower than the edges of the window sill. If outside the recess they should be at least the width of the windowsill if not wider.

You are right! The made to measure ones all seem to be the same around 91cm width (like the ones we have) and the next size up is far bigger and would require cutting which I feel like I'd mess up, and made to measure are so much more expensive! Trying to decide if I can live with it! Sad

Agree the blind needs to be wider!

You could try PerfectFit black out blinds on the actual window then have the roller for decoration.

Saz12 · 07/11/2023 14:34

To me it looks like its rolled the wrong way....
Its too narrow really, sorry. Can you get the widwr one and trim to fit - watch youtube videos and take your time.

rockpoolingtogether · 07/11/2023 20:26

Upstairs blinds are fine

carddino · 07/11/2023 20:35

So.

We are very rural scotland. I like blinds. But need curtains.

We have windows like this.

Some blinds are tilt and turn blinds and fit to top pane of glass.

Some are slim fit at top and still fit inside the frame? I probably couldn't open the window if blind was down much but then have curtains.
