What would go with this 1980s dining table?

It's a mahogany and this shade of green. Currently paired with terracotta and an off white/beige dullness. It's a north facing and cold room. It needs lifting with new walls and curtains and maybe carpet. Thanks!

I’m not even sure what that pic is of 😂

There's a matching cocktail cabinet with antique brass handles. It's not a big room.

Sorry, that's the chair back. The seats are the sane colour. It's not sage and it's not moss either and I'm not sure what it is!

Have you considered recovering the chairs?

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 05/10/2023 12:09

That would depend on cost but would be nice.

I'm not even sure what that's supposed to be. Confused Just looks like a rubbing rag for a car. Can you post a proper picture of the dining set @JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots ?

Here's a chair to give you a better idea

Depends on the chair style, but it may be possible to do yourself.
Some designs are much harder than others!

And the cabinet

Is it your furniture and your home or are you decorating for a parent/grandparent who would probably stick to a more traditional so style.

If it's yours, I'd get rid of it, if that's an option (but I dislike mahogany) and get something more classic or contemporary.

No option to change the furniture.

I quite like the chair, it’s a citrine colour. The cabinet is another story though. There are so many better storage solutions. Can I ask are you quite elderly?

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 05/10/2023 12:57

It's my mum's snd much loved by the whole family. The room needs redecorating and new curtains and possibly carpet so I'm trying to help her choose a colour scheme.

Oh yeah thanks @JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots I really like them. Smile

TheCountessofLocksley · 05/10/2023 14:07

I think I'd start by looking at a grey and green colour scheme (if not changing the upholstery), 3 grey and one warm but bold green wall.

A white wood wash floor with a rug that contrasts with either/both the green wall colour and/or seat covers.

I'd stick a large contemporary/abstract print on the wall to reflect the accent colour

With curtains i'd look for something to complement the upholstery/green wall colour.

Again a lot depends on how often the room is used as to how much you invest in it. If sprucing up to sell, just stick with a neutral palette.

Bleuuuughhh · 05/10/2023 15:34

We’ve got loads of dark wood in our house and olive greens go really well with it and bring out the colour. The chairs are really nice, but the cabinet is a bit fusty. It would be massively improved if you changed the handles to pull in the same colour and added some 60s legs to it. It would tie in with the chairs and by lifting it from the ground it would feel less clumpy.

If terracotta is liked this also goes really well with curtains and accessories against green

Thank you for the suggestions but it's only the colours for walls and curtains we need. The furniture will not be changed in any way.

I'm not sure about grey. It's a cold room and north facing. It's currently terracotta and that off white/beige colour and it's dingy. It needs lifting and giving a warm glow.

Oh and no wooden floors with rugs due to being a trip hazard.

Bleuuuughhh · 05/10/2023 16:58

It really doesn’t matter what colour you paint, or what curtains you have, if you insist on that hideous monstrosity dominating the room, it will ruin it. It’s not even good quality for fucksake.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 05/10/2023 17:01

@Bleuuuughhh how rude.

gluenotsoup · 05/10/2023 17:01

The chair is a lovely shape. Could you go for a warm white, with a light gold, olive and creamy accessories? A large plant, textured cushions, lamps will cosy it up. I’m not sure what you can do with the cabinet though apart from persuading her to have it painted and change the handles.

explainthistomeplease · 05/10/2023 17:04

Lovely chair but if you're using it as a dining chair I would re upholster in a patterned fabric - much more forgiving for spills!

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 05/10/2023 17:09

I think gold too but a pale gold but mum isn't sure.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/10/2023 17:09

I think it needs warmth. Mahogany has a warm tone unlike current fashionable walnut which looks good with greens.

l’d be looking at a plaster colour or slightly darker.

CheersToMe · 05/10/2023 17:14

So it's your mum's room and you are helping her? That's kind.

Maybe warm but light green walls? We have Farrow and Ball Cromarty in a north-west room. It's one of their lightest greens but still has a lovely depth to it.

Patterned curtains - cream with a green and pink pattern for warmth? Maybe a William Morris style print which would complement the furniture and pick up the mahogany tones.

Neutral beige carpet and maybe a large Persian style rug under the table and chairs.

Dress the cabinet with her favourite bits and pieces, plants hanging down from the top and a lamp with a pink shade.
