Name changed for this.

we moved house last year and I’ve finally taken the old curtains down.

Id bought some pinkish/blush ones and was about to put them up but now I’m looking at the window and it looks a lot brighter without curtains. You can see down to the water and the hills in the distance. Any curtains can’t be floor length as they’d cover the radiator.

would you:

a) put up the blush curtains that were bought today

b) order a roller blind

c) just leave it with the blinds that are there (although we’re in a cold part of the country so poss not the best idea)

d) do something else

e) let the dog decide

its a big window (3m+) so can’t really get Roman blinds as all the manufacturers I checked stopped below 3m

any wise words welcome!

Get a much longer pole so that the curtains are against the wall when they're open. That way you don't lose any window.

The dog has some sense. Don't get involved in DIY

This☝ only came on for the dog picture then decided was going to write this too but beaten to it! Looks much better without those blinds but the dog is sooooo cute😍

What about wooden plantation shutters, I have these and you wouldn't need to move things off the window sill to open but do have the option of opening fully if you want to.

Blindsorcurtains · 07/05/2023 16:59

@Mossstitch my only thing about the wooden plantation shutters is will a lot of heat escape in the winter and then I’d be back needing curtains?

I realise this decision seems to be taking a day and an age….it’s not exactly gripping stuff but o look out of this window every day so trying to get it right.

I asked on at a curtain supplier and they said 3 x Roman blinds - 2 small ones for the small side windows and one big one. I can’t decided if that would look good or bad.

The dog buggered off for the day. She can’t take blind chat anymore.

Maybe don't rule out full length curtains. We have radiator height thermal curtains with light full length curtains in front. The thermal ones come down in summer. The light ones are light enough that they tuck behind the radiator when closed so stop all the heat escaping up under the curtains, and they're light enough they don't crease. We have 6 in panels rather than joined together so we can choose how many to close and they're ready to wash

I love that foldy ear. What is the dog's name?

Florissante · 07/05/2023 20:23

This is a great thread. Love the ongoing narration and the cute canine companion.

Blindsorcurtains · 07/05/2023 22:45

@StamppotAndGravy I had a look at this option thanks for suggestion but it’s not a big room and would just dominate it.

dog gets called all sorts. Answers to anything that involves food 😂

Gorgeous dog. MN loves plantation shutters and full length curtains but blinds or short curtains are more appropriate for your style of house. I grew up where you live and would say short curtains would be best in the winter to feel cozy but take your time deciding because you can live with nothing over the next few months.

rwalker · 08/05/2023 06:39

Leave the blinds i too have them and hate them but they give privacy with light when you want
put curtains up but have a bigger rail/pole than the window
so that curtains when pulled back are covering the wall not the window

Get some good old fashioned nets! I always remember my mum spending hours making sure her pleats were perfect whenever she put new nets up back in the day when they were fashionable. mind you I have seen a few houses with nets just recently so maybe they're making a come back 🤔

@Blindsorcurtains If your house is higher up - and you're growing a hedge - so passers-by can't easily see it/you're not particularly overlooked, I'd definitely leave the window bare for now. That's better than a) leaving up those hideous old blinds (hurrah that they've gone!) or b) rushing into an unsuitable replacement imho.

We aren't overlooked either (and the house is considerably higher than street level) - although our property is much older - and we've actually left our front windows (kitchen and living room) completely bare. Initially we did put a roman blind up in thr kitchen but found we weren't bothering to close it, so when we replaced the windows a couple of years ago the blind didn't go back. It's much nicer having a completely unobserved view!

I get the need for window dressing of some kind in your living room during the colder months though and - whilst I'm usually an advocate of full length curtains and have previously moved radiators from beneath windows in order to have them - I think that due to the width of your window, short curtains would probably be my choice here....you just need to find some really lovely ones (not eyelets!) as well as a nicer pole.

I've also previously made roman blinds for a very wide window (with two side-by-side panels) - but it was tall too which somehow made it work, I think. Your wide-but-not-particularly-tall window doesn't seem right for roman blinds imho. I could be wrong, however.

Regarding the use of a longer pole - that's what I'd normally do as it definitely makes the window look wider (not necessary in your case!) whilst also letting in maximum light - however, looking at your pics again it seems that the window is fairly close to the adjacent wall on one side, thus limiting how much longer you can go.....

Adorable and very photogenic sausage, btw - I'm particularly fond of dachshunds having previously owned two....Cumberland and Bertie.

*see in, not it!

LibertyLily · 08/05/2023 13:32

Bloody autocorrect! That was supposed to say 'unobscured' not unobserved....grrr!

SkaneTos · 08/05/2023 20:10

Those paws are so cute!

Not boring at all, especially with the cute dog 😃the plantation shutters act like triple glazing! West facing lounge in hilly place so the weather gets thrown at that window, was very draughty before I had them fitted even with thick curtains as draft seemed to get around the edges as was on a curtain pole .I've got the ones that are in two parts so you can pull back the top ones totally to open top windows or let lots of light in whilst still getting some privacy from lower ones, which you can adjust the slant of as you like on the individual panels. Also handy that you can close off individual sections if the sun shining on your screen without having to close all slats like with a blind.

I love them, only downside is the price otherwise I would have them everywhere!

NellyBarney · 10/05/2023 20:39

If you want to add Roman blinds, you could get several rather than 1 massive one, either 2 or even 4 (1 each for the side windows and 2 to cover the middle). You can then have floor length curtains with a long pole more for decorations rather than use.

Instahome2 · 13/05/2023 08:20

Hi blinds or curtains,
Our curtains went up yesterday, they are just dress ones, we use the faux wooden blinds most of the time. Attached pic also includes sleeping mini dachshund 😀

A fabric covered box pelmet with a roller blind underneath. Gives a splash of colour in the pelmet and hides the practical roller blind. Find a local curtain maker. They will know someone who can make the pelmet and the oversized blind
