Curtains help - pic of dog included!

Name changed for this.

we moved house last year and I’ve finally taken the old curtains down.

Id bought some pinkish/blush ones and was about to put them up but now I’m looking at the window and it looks a lot brighter without curtains. You can see down to the water and the hills in the distance. Any curtains can’t be floor length as they’d cover the radiator.

would you:

a) put up the blush curtains that were bought today

b) order a roller blind

c) just leave it with the blinds that are there (although we’re in a cold part of the country so poss not the best idea)

d) do something else

e) let the dog decide

its a big window (3m+) so can’t really get Roman blinds as all the manufacturers I checked stopped below 3m

any wise words welcome!

Right they need ironed, pole needs adjusted, blind fixings taken down etc but given that it’s 10pm that’s fine for tonight.

The dog has made a nest on the old house owner’s curtains.

Also love the beautiful daxie too. My daxie puppy is driving us mental at the moment.

Blindsorcurtains · 06/05/2023 22:07

@StamppotAndGravy yes the pole I bought today is a lot longer the previous old one that had erm rather flashy finials. You’re right that’s made a massive difference and with the blinds down we’re now not losing the 2 side windows

@Jolenetookmyman i looked at the wooden blinds but there’s quite often plants on the window sill that are indoors ‘til it gets warmer. I’d need to keep moving the plants to get the blinds down. They’re massive windows these 1960s houses aren’t they?

I see I'm late to the descision party but honestly I was only here for the doggy pics, and I wasn't disappointed as there are a few not just one! Grin

She has the right idea in several photos. Nap time or snuggle time but definitely not work time 😂

Blindsorcurtains · 06/05/2023 22:25

Ok the curtains are going back. The silver eyelets against the black pole are just…. no. Can I add that both purchases were made in haste as I was trying to figure out what to do.

The black pole looks awful. It was the one they had on the size I needed! It needs a wooden pole or something less…just less black.

@Pixiedust1234 the dog has fully given up and gone to sleep.

If you have time on your hands then you can make Roman blinds yourself. I’m not that much of a seamstress but a sewing machine and an instruction book was enough for me to make a decent enough set. It was a while ago but I remember that I made them to hang off a curtain pole set above the recess.

morelippy · 06/05/2023 22:49

Haven't really read any of the comments re blinds or curtains, but your window is nearly as lovely as your dog

Davros · 06/05/2023 22:49

I love the dog nest

Blindsorcurtains · 06/05/2023 22:53

@WarningToTheCurious ah no machine and not really the time at the moment. Tackling the garden bit by bit. Trying to get a Roman blind made was turning into £££ due to length of window and needing to join the fabric. Would also be quite heavy give the size but Roman was my preferred option.

@morelippy its a nice window to watch the sunset/rise; hence the whole curtain dilemma but taking those vertical things off have made a big difference.

@Davros i have traumatised the dog with poles and balancing on the sofa enough for one night. She earned that next of old curtains

MaisieDaisyMay · 06/05/2023 23:02

I'm having a similar dilemma.

...but sadly no cute dog!!

I don't want curtain due to the radiator & IMO short ones look dreadful in the lounge.

romans take up too much window (take away the light)
damw with white wood blinds & shutters.

so mine stay undressed🙇🏻‍♀️ I'm not as overlooked as you in one way, but my immediate neighbours walk directly past my windows (private lane, so not really people passing by, only neighbours & their visitors).

drives me nuts. Look forward to your updates.

Pollydollydoodle · 06/05/2023 23:21

I took all my vertical blinds and curtains down and room by room replaced with white wooden slats and I love them.
I also love that your not partying on a Saturday night and hanging curtains! Px

OnMyWayToSenility · 06/05/2023 23:26

Google easy fit blinds from blinds to 2go, they do thermal options too.

GodspeedJune · 06/05/2023 23:30

Love that you’re up doing this at 10pm!

Blindsorcurtains · 06/05/2023 23:39

@MaisieDaisyMay yes agree I’m not liking the short curtains. Especially the eyelet ones I bought. They look naff. we won’t be overlooked for too long; hedging going in but the house is higher up than folk walking past so doesn’t feel too overlooked at the moment anyway if that makes sense.

@Pollydollydoodle i would go wooden slats but the bloody plants (I’m not the gardener)

@OnMyWayToSenility ill have a look at easy fit - the damn size of the window makes it too big for most options but will try this one.

I don’t drink (recovering alky) hence I spend my Saturdays hanging curtains and giving the dog a complex.

Here is the dog in happier, curtain free times.

Thanks for the cute dog pic, OP. Big dog lover here.

Nothing else to add as forgotten what the post was originally about 😊

Blindsorcurtains · 06/05/2023 23:51

@AmeliaWarnerBros after deciding the curtains don’t look right, that I can’t get the easy fit blinds as window too big I have no idea why I started this thread…the dog is the glue that’s holding it all together to be honest.

OP posts:
Furries · 07/05/2023 03:42

Your dog is beyond cute - great tactic OP!

Window definitely looks better without the vertical blinds (always make me think of offices on industrial estates).

Can you not just paint your curtain pole?

Blindsorcurtains · 07/05/2023 08:05

@furries I could but brackets etc still in their packaging (used existing brackets to try out curtains).

switching today to either a track and pencil pleat curtains or a roller blind in the recess or wooden blinds and I move the plants permanently.

if the radiator wasn’t there it would be a lot simpler but no where else to put it.

OP posts:
Blindsorcurtains · 07/05/2023 09:40

well if anyone cares how the boring blind/ curtain saga is going…:

To the PPs who suggested wooden slats - am now going for this option.

It’s a small house with a wee open plan kitchen/living/dining area (just the right size for us) - the curtains proximity to the kitchen makes it all look out of proportion particularly since the can’t be floor length with the radiator where it is.

so now I have a day of sourcing blinds and poss cutting / fitting if I can find the right ones today.

thanks all!

Sounds like you have a plan. What about a plant stand for in front of the window?

Don’t forget to post a picture when you are done .

Davros · 07/05/2023 11:11

Don't ruin your window plans because if plants that can go elsewhere. It's by a radiator anyway so not good for plants. Lovely doggy closeup

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 07/05/2023 11:19

Ex curtain specifier here.

Even if you could get Roman blinds for that width, it wouldn’t be a good idea, the strain on the cords ( and on your wrists) would mean they would soon stretch and break. However, you could have two blinds , with the cleat on each side of the window. You could mount them on the top of the reveal so they would pull clear of the window almost completely.

Personally I would put up two light excluding rollers , because they are also very good heat insulators. You could put your new curtains up in the winter, when you would have them closed more often , and take them down in the summer. You might look at sheers for the summer if you want a bit of privacy. They would be top mounted, the rollers would go inside the recess but also mounted to the underside of the reveal.

Im sure the dog would agree.

Blindsorcurtains · 07/05/2023 11:43

@Jolenetookmyman thank you! There’s some sort of plant thing beneath window. I know feck all about plants. DH has said the plants are all going outside once the polytunnel is installed anyway.

@Davros yes you’re right re radiator. Although them lemon tree has sprung 4 new lemons. Again I know feck all about plants.

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen if you wouldn’t mind your brain being picked - would two light excluding rollers about the recess leave a strip down the middle of light getting in? Im trying to think of the two blind holder bits being side by side and wondered how much of a gap would be left?

dog seems to be holding guard over the soon to be returned curtain pole.
