Would this put you off a house?

These are the stairs - in my living room. Would it annoy you or not bother you?

Would this put you off a house?

It wouldn’t be my first choice. We lived in a house similar and when the dc were younger the noise of the tv and people taking travels and they would be difficult to put to bed.

but if it was the only negative in an otherwise perfect house then I would probably go ahead and make an offer.

Lavenderfowl · 21/03/2023 16:32

Wouldn’t bother me at all - if you boarded them in the stairs would be very dark and claustrophobic - they’re actually quite a nice feature of the room.

Schmutter · 21/03/2023 16:34

I wouldn’t love it, but it would be easy to box them in.

DebbieElsden · 21/03/2023 16:35

I have the same in my house. Not having the wall between hall and lounge opens up the room and creates more space - I like it. Smile

boboshmobo · 21/03/2023 16:35

Depends on the size do the house , a started home , no .

A 4 bed house then yes but just box them in

Newjumper2023 · 21/03/2023 16:35

I bought a house like this and it was never a problem however it was just me and young dc. I think if I had a partner /teen dc watching TV banging about late at night it might have been a problem. So it will probably depend on individual circumstances.

QuillBill · 21/03/2023 16:36

For me it would depend on the rest of the layout. Is there any hallway at all? For your shoes and stuff.

peekaboo321 · 21/03/2023 16:39

It's a 3 bed, the door you can see on the right leads to the kitchen with no hallway in between, then a conservatory. There's a small entrance hall about 6x3ft it's tiny but it is enough for a shoe rack, coat hook and folded up buggy.

Yes it puts me off.
I’m scouring RM at the moment and there is a property that would be brilliant for us IF the stairs weren’t like those pictured.

Pemba · 21/03/2023 16:41

I grew up in a house like that, stairs going into the living room. It is a bit of a pain, with the noise from the TV etc travelling upstairs when others are trying to sleep or just want to be quiet in their bedrooms. Can be colder in the living room too as the stair well gives it a higher ceiling, it is a big open space.

So a bit of a negative overall but if the house was otherwise great it might not put me off. Looks nice in the photo.

Viviennemary · 21/03/2023 16:44

I don't like open stairs in a room. I wouldnt buy a house like this. But plenty of folk do.

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 21/03/2023 16:44

I think they look unattractive and would have glass put in instead.

DESGUSTING · 21/03/2023 16:47

My old house was like this.
It didn't bother us, no issue with noise etc, next door bordered the stairs off and it was really dark.

EspeciallyDedicated · 21/03/2023 16:47

I had a house with stairs in the living room, it made it very draughty, cold ankles in the evenings. Noise travelled upstairs too if someone was up late watching TV. It is on my list of features to avoid if possible now. Is that the original layout or have you knocked a hall through into the living room?

Pixiedust1234 · 21/03/2023 16:48

Hate them, sorry. Its an automatic discount for all houses with open stairs and/or no baths when looking to buy. Large childhood home and divorced mums small home both had these and they are awful for keeping the heat in the room/no draughts.

FinallyHere · 21/03/2023 16:55

No problem with the look. The issue for me is how to heat the living room and stop any warmer air disappearing upstairs.

I like to be warm downstairs and have the bedrooms much cooler.

spinspinspinthewheel · 21/03/2023 16:56

My old house where I lived for 15 years had ope stairs in the living room. House hunting last year, a non negotiable was NOT having stairs in the living room.

I hated it. More noise. Draughty. Couldn’t keep the heat in the room. hated having to have something either sofa, sideboard or what ever under the stairs.

in my new home I love being able to close the living room door especially in winter with the radiator on. Heated up in minutes and stays warm for ages.

Lakeyloo · 21/03/2023 16:56

My house is like this and I don't mind it, but I would rather have them separate if I had a choice now. I find I'm mainly heating the upstairs and if I don't shut the bedroom doors, it can smell of cooking up there.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/03/2023 16:59

Depends what seat space there is. I wouldn't put the sofa there as it has to be the perfect size (yours is) to use the stairs and the cupboard.

Also where r the kids bedrooms and how much does noise and light travel?

Mercurial123 · 21/03/2023 17:02

Yes, it would me off.

Theraffarian · 21/03/2023 17:03

It’s very common in houses in this area of a certain age , but yes it would put me off buying .

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/03/2023 17:04

If it makes the lounge into an overly large hallway leading to the kitchen and dining room, then yes it would put me off. I don't like through rooms.

Orangetapemeasure · 21/03/2023 17:04

We’ve just moved into a house with stairs in the living room. We are having them replaced with new stairs and a glass wall with doors….as pp have commented, it’s impossible to heat the room as all the heat goes up the stairs. If the house is right in every way then it needn’t be a deal breaker, but you’ll have to work out how to keep the heat in.

EggyBreads · 21/03/2023 17:04

Wouldn't bother me at all.

Timmy2023 · 21/03/2023 17:05

Wouldn't bother me at all.

But omg that light fixture.
