Only bathroom: Ditch the bath and only have shower?

chronictonic · 06/03/2023 20:50

We need to do up our tiny bathroom in our little victorian terrace. Never done it in 12 years and it shows!

We have 1 DC who is almost 10.
So there's 3 of us.

We've always had a bath shower and shower screen.

DH and I only ever have showers but DD prefers a bath still...

If we ditched the bath and just had a lovely walk in proper shower it would make it so much easier and nicer to do up and also feel bigger.

Would we be mad to have no bath?
I figure DC will grow out of baths soon so why be stuck with one that only gets used a handful of times a year?

If we were ever really desperate for a bath we could go to my mum's who lives nearby and has a luxurious bathroom with a huge bath!

We have had just a shower for years now ( other bathroom needs a major overhaul) and we do miss a bath; not often but here and there we really wish we had one.

userxx · 06/03/2023 20:52

I personally love a bath but if it's not your thing then rip it out.

Happierwithouthim · 08/03/2023 16:53

I moved into a different house in 2021, myself and two dc. Ds was 7 at the time and liked baths and was a bit upset about it, there's none at his dads house either, but he hasn't mentioned it for months now. Bf has a bath in his house so I've got the option and I haven't used it once.

chipsandpeas · 08/03/2023 16:59

your DD might not grow out of a bath, i never have, i still love a bath a few times a week

PuttingDownRoots · 08/03/2023 17:03

I have 2 DDs with long hair... shower is so much easier!

10yo does love a good bubble bath when we stay on a hotel though.

CorsicaDreaming · 18/03/2023 04:37

Why not wait to do it up until your DS no longer loves baths? Seems a shame to take it out if he loves them.

Personally I like a bath about once a week, and would definitely think twice (probably not) buy a house without a bath.

mrshenny · 18/03/2023 04:44

I love having the option of a bath. I find them really relaxing. I think if your kid still enjoys them I would keep it.

ArdeteiMasazxu · 18/03/2023 04:50

we have a similar dilemma and the big issue would definitely be about whether you would be knocking thousands off your sale price when you come to move, because a lot of families with kids under 8 would dismiss a house without a bath immediately. if it's going to be decades before you move and the difference in finances that far in the future doesn't worry you then go for it.

Phoebo · 18/03/2023 05:02

Head says yes, heart says no. I love a good bath

UsingChangeofName · 18/03/2023 05:07

You said your dd prefers a bath. Does she not count in this decision ?

Obviously up to you what you choose to do in your own home, but it seems a little odd to ask for approval on here to disregard what your dd wants when she is 1/3 of the people that will be using it.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 18/03/2023 05:24

I wouldn't buy a home without a bath and certainly wouldn't re model a house without one, especially in a family home where you may put potential buyers off

Kittylickingplate · 18/03/2023 05:59

Plenty of houses her don't have a bath, do it!
Think how special a treat a bath will become.

Kittylickingplate · 18/03/2023 05:59

here

magicthree · 18/03/2023 06:09

Go for it! I never have a bath, even though I have a bath in my flat, and would be happy to have it gone and never see one again. Hate them.

flashbac · 18/03/2023 07:20

No. It would put me off as a buyer too.

SaltanVinegar · 18/03/2023 09:55

We did this and haven’t regretted it. We’re not looking to sell, ever, so we just went with what made sense for our family. It makes the room feel bigger, and is better for mobility reasons too.

She prefers a bath now, but don't all young children? She is fast approaching teenhood so I'm thinking ahead and she has the exact same hair as me so I know she'll be showering more than bathing when she realises what a hassle washing our hair is!

Thanks all. Lots of different perspectives!
I think we've decided to stick to a bath shower mix - for lots of the reasons suggested.
It's a house suitable for young fanilies so I think it really needs a bath for sale value etc even though we arent planning to move soon..

That was a quick turnaround.

AlltheFs · 18/03/2023 17:16

Our house only has a big shower, bought like that and DD is 3. I very occasionally pine for a bath bit not enough to put one in.

DD has a fold up bath which is suitable to age 6. After that she will have to have a shower.

Our last house had multiple bathrooms that we didn’t use and we had a huge shower and bath in the main one. I used the bath 4 times in 4 years, so when we moved here having one bathroom and no bath was a compromise we were fine with.

raspberrywine · 19/03/2023 09:30

We've just had our bathroom done. It's tiny. We've gone for bath because at least one of us likes a soak now and then. I would have quite happily have had a walk in shower. Anyway, my main point is, it all looks and feels more spacious now because it's calm, coordinated and brand new. Just having a full re-fit will make a difference to the feel of the room.

Geneticsbunny · 21/03/2023 12:38

Could you fit a Japanese soaking tub in and a seperate shower?

AnnPerkins · 21/03/2023 13:07

We plan to replace our bath with a shower this year. We stopped taking baths a year ago (ignoring 12yo DS's complaints) and since then our water bill has reduced by £11/month.

We're not planning to sell our house any time soon and we want to future proof it, our elderly parents' recent experiences have shown us that it's difficult and dangerous to try to manage with a bath once you're getting on in years.

If it proves difficult to sell when the time comes we'll stick a bath back in, although I reckon even fewer people will be using them in a decade or two.

hugoagogo · 21/03/2023 19:03

We are looking to buy, no bath puts me off straight away.
It's such a shame when people have obviously spent a lot of money to do somewhere up, then ruined it by removing the bath.

TheClitterati · 24/03/2023 09:12

I'm thinking of doing the same.

I'd love to fit Japanese tub plus separate shower but I do t think we have the room.

We are not planning on moving so will focus in what suit us. I'm not living my life thinking a possible buyer in 10/15 years might want a bath. If the do they can put one in when they remodel the bathroom
