It's quite big but as you can see very messy with no order.it's normally got boxed tools piled up in there too. You have to get everything out when you want to get something.
We need pretty much everything in there. Tiny house so this is important storage.
It's in our living room.
We have about £2.50 to spend. OK maybe a bit more but not much and definately not enough for anything bespoke and I'm not building anything other than flat packs!
I don't know what to do with the bit with the steps as that goes really far back (we could fit a laid down dining chair) without even reaching the fuse box so I want to use that space.
We think the wall with the fuse box has lots of wires etc so we don't want to drill into that. The other wall is thin plyboard. The door itself is also thin plyboard.

We'd like to be able to put the vacuum in, in particular but that only fits in the highest point.

Well that lot's a hot mess! What I did in mine is make the most of hanging space, so I have hooks all over the place so stuff is flat against the walls. I've also made bespoke shelving units to exactly fit each area, using ply bought off ebay. There are sellers who'll cut to your exact sizes which makes the job cheap & easy.

Bramshott · 23/02/2023 09:54

Can you get a load of plastic storage boxes, label them and stack them on top of each other?

Namechange1011111stairs · 23/02/2023 16:27

Yes it is a mess. It's normally a little bit neater but we've (husband) has taken all the boxes of tools out and just left everything where it fell. It's pointless tidying it up because it'll all need to come back out when he eventually puts the tools back in. Or rather, shen I get fed up and put them back.

Really don't want to build anything. The tools were taken out (months ago) because he's doing some building stuff on and off and I can't cope with that going on even longer by adding extra stuff to his to do list. I'm rubbish at anything like that.

Unfortunately it's mostly things like tools, paint, cleaning stuff so not much hangable but I like the idea.

Normally lots of things piled up in boxes but I was trying to think of a way that doesn't involve having to pull everything out when you want something (that is always in the bottom box).

I have this dilemma too, and I can't really afford to do the sectioned pull out things from the side, as I'm having to pay for so much else in the house.

I have one of those IKEA Trofast stepped storage things that pulls out at the moment, but it's still not ideal.
I shall be watching with interest for any ideas!

worried4698643 · 23/02/2023 16:48

I would LOVE to organise that!

You can never go wrong with a Kalax unit.

parietal · 23/02/2023 22:12

I'd go for lots of IKEA boxes, these ones
www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/samla-box-with-lid-transparent-s69440761/

and most importantly, labels & a sharpie. then you can put everything in boxes and label them. stack the boxes up so you can see the labels, and then you are sorted.

sure, some stuff will be in boxes at the bottom of the stack but that is probably things you only use once or twice a year, so that is OK.

and when you are at IKEA, get some LED lights so that you can see everything that is in the boxes too.

Mine is similar and I have stacked Kallax cubes in an L-shape, some with baskets some without. Not brilliant but better.

ReadersD1gest · 23/02/2023 22:18

Do you actually need all of that? Don't fall into the trap of buying storage to house random crap.

Spectre8 · 23/02/2023 22:35

£2.50! That's not much to spend. Or did you make a typo....

Spectre8 · 23/02/2023 22:40

Myabe shelving like this. Shelving mirroring the steps right at the end ..most paint cans or small height items go there.

Then slwves around ur meters and pipes thay are only half depth leaving yo uroom for vacuum at the tallest point. You then have boxes in the space at the front of shelves too

What about a rolling tool chest, one of those ones with drawers, to store all of the tools and make it easy to put them away and access anything else in the cupboard?

Another one I'd like to see!

Wilma55 · 24/02/2023 12:16

Put a door on it and at least you won't see it.

MumOf2workOptions · 24/02/2023 12:45

Take everything out and bin what you don't need
Kallax unit for the rest

Don't you have a garage/shed for tins of paint etc to clear that out the way?

Namechange1011111stairs · 24/02/2023 13:32

We genuingely need everything in there. Nowhere else to store it.

Will look into that stepped kallix. I didn't know that existed. I will have to work out how easily you can get to the metres with it and how much delivery is.

Rummikub · 24/02/2023 13:36

B n q do a similar one to IKEA Kallax that’s shallower i think

IKEA have metal
shelving that’s a decent price (£12?) or cheaper if you go for the one that’s meant to be for the garden.

Namechange1011111stairs · 24/02/2023 13:38

This lot normally lives in there too. Although the two white tubs are wallpaper paste that will be used up soon. The cardboard box has a few things in there that will be chucked when we're done with them. My partner is inexplainably attached to that door lock! We have nowhere we could use it but he absolutely refuses to get rid! 🤣

I have three of these, split into different heights to fit in the space. Boxes or baskets to organise stuff, hoover just fits in front of them

Namechange1011111stairs · 24/02/2023 13:51

How strong are they @Ted27 ?

They look like an affordable option.

OP posts:
Ted27 · 24/02/2023 14:42

If you distrubute the weight around they are quite sturdy

Because my cupboard is long and skinny, I can only fit two full height ones in, I have another two, split into three and two shelves so its quite easy to spread things around.
At the moment for the tall ones I have toolboxes in the middle, decorating things like tins of paint at the bottom, baskets with cleaning stuff, odds and sods towards the top.

philautia · 24/02/2023 15:00

It does look like a mess but you actually don't have much in there.

I'd go for some IKEA storage (the stepped storage options are good for under stairs)

mightymam · 24/02/2023 16:14

This is ours:

We have a downstairs toilet to one side and in the next compartment, there's the washing machine, a basket for shoes (I like a tidy hallway), wash basket behind shoes basket and then laundry detergent, etc. in tiniest slopey bit.
