In the middle of house renovation. A few rooms nearing completion so need to think about furnishing them - on a budget!

Looking for really good quality but can’t afford new so best bet is gumtree/eBay or the like.

Any makes/manufacturers you would def recommend? Would happily get them reupholstered if I didn’t like fabric.

Many thanks in advance.

Try nabru, new. They are very reasonable

I have a Delcor sofa, 13 years old and still looks incredible. I have no doubt it will last another ten years. Although I bought it new, I'm a huge fan of buying quality furniture second hand through eBay. I bought a Laura Ashley sofa which was 4 years old, I've had it for another 3 and again it's still in super condition; whilst not as high quality as Delcor, it will easily last another 5 years.

I bought 2 Delcor 3 seaters in January 1986. I had them reupholstered by Delcor in 2010 and they are still going great. I'm currently doing a major house refurb and if there is enough left in the pot I would like them reupholstered again, not because they need it but I want to change the colour/ fabric.

Tetrad sofa here. Silk velvet type upholstery.
The sun ruined the fabric at the top of the sear back - it disintegrated almost completely where the sun came through the north west facing window. It was over years though.
Be careful what fabric you choose and whether the sun hits it.

Sofas and stuff

Keep an eye on the auctions, lots road etc,

Roselilly36 · 08/02/2023 20:40

Buy quality G plan, Parker knoll, British made and really last well.

Welfast · 09/02/2023 10:59

We've got a big Natuzzi sofa. It's the nicest comfiest thing we've ever owned

Just add that I have a huge Loaf sofa - I wanted it more than anything.

Now it's in, I hate it with a fiery passion. Looks constantly scruffy and is so uncomfortable unless you're 6"4' or taller, or you fully lie down.

I would give anything for a smart, solid, traditional sofa now, but can't justify the cost. Blush

This is my concern about Loaf. I really like the look of the Jonesy, but I am worried it won’t be comfortable at all. Something about the seat depth to back height ratio looks wrong.

SuperGinger · 09/02/2023 13:01

George Smith - beautiful and made to last

Whattodotomorrow · 10/02/2023 11:20

We have a Parker knoll and Ercol sofa. Both of eBay and both a fraction of what they should have cost. The Ercol is ‘retro’ and when we have a few spare pounds we will get it recovered but perfectly useable in the meantime.
otherwise sign up to the Trade Secrets website…lots of discounts.

Honestly I’d still go to Ikea even if someone gave me 10 grand for a sofa. Good quality, good choice, washable and well priced.

Userusing1 · 10/02/2023 11:27

It's worth looking on Next clearance pages for Laura Ashley stuff, there are sometimes Laura Ashley sofas.

JaninaDuszejko · 10/02/2023 15:46

I would buy an old old sofa from ebay/vinterior and reupholster. You want a hardwood frame and sprung cushions or seat. Or go somewhere like Loft Me, they sell reupholstered mid century furniture.

UserNameSameGame · 10/02/2023 15:58

We paid £8k+ for a pair of Nattuzi leather sofas which basically fell apart in 2 years.

Replaced them with an IKEA tidifors corner sofa for £800 which has now been going strong for over 10 years. Seriously considering just getting it reupholstered for the new house.

(Also considering Loaf)

I agree with this 100%
IKEA furniture is so well made.I would have bough my last sofa from there but covid really mucked up the stock that was available at the time.
My next one will definitely be from IKEA.

LancreWowhawk · 10/02/2023 16:37

We have very tricky access restrictions, but a large lounge that needs a big sofa to suit the proportions. I didn't think I would actually find a sofa I liked that I could physically get into the room, but sofa.com came up trumps. We have an Isla, in Armor clever velvet, I love it so much, and I would choose it again and again.

Alwaystheplusone · 14/02/2023 08:29

Kingcombe or George Smith. Cheaper than George Smith but same style/excellent quality then look at George Sherlock

kweeble · 14/02/2023 08:55

I love my Loaf velvet sofa and any marks clean up well with a baby wipe

coronafiona · 17/02/2023 10:53

Nabru are good and very cost effective from new, worth a try?

ChatSamosa · 17/02/2023 22:31

Laura Ashley, I've done this with 4 second hand ones. I like their shape and their ability to make me sit up properly on them.

TheBeesKnee · 17/02/2023 22:37

I have a Loaf after years on a horrible second hand sofa. It's lovely. Yes, feather cushions need plumping but the comfort is unreal. Everyone who comes to my house succumbs to a nap on the Loaf. We call it "getting Loafed" and there's even a photo gallery of all the victims 😂

That being said, they're very deep and now that I'm 28 weeks pregnant I wish I had a sturdier place to sit as well.

Multiyork went in to administration in 2017 sadly. I also think quality has declined massively so people saying buy this I’ve had it for 20 years will probably have bought at better quality. ExDH and I bought Nazzuzi back in 2002, apart from a few cat scratches on the seats they are still fine and he still uses them daily. DP and I went to look at them about 5 years ago and they just weren’t the same quality. We ended up with a sofa from Camerich, it is the most uncomfortable thing I have had the misfortune to buy and I loved it in the shop. Such an expensive mistake.

Yes, but OP specifically asked for quality brands to buy second-hand and re-upholster so Multiyork fits the bill nicely, even though they are no longer trading.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 18/02/2023 12:59

@MotherOfHouseplants you’re absolutely right she did, but it doesn’t meant that it isn’t helpful for other readers to know this.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 18/02/2023 13:03

My Duresta sofas are over 25 years old, have been reupholstered once (mainly as the dogs wrecked the covers, but had new foam in the cushions at the same time and are very heavy and solid, so if you can find some old Duresta sofas I would recommend. Reupholstering sofas properly is very expensive mind you, you can buy brand new cheaper sofas for the same price.

Laura Ashley sofa 10 years old went to the tip, no where near the quality of the Duresta.

HamFrancisco · 18/02/2023 13:12

I enquired about reupholstering recently and the surprisingly expensive element would have been new foam seat cushions, about £70 each.
