You haven’t seen an uglier bathroom than this one!

The toilet is so far under the eaves that only a child can sit on it!

Yes, that is a square bath (no vents or dehumidifier so is not used.

if you look closely at the ceiling tiles you might notice they are made of floppy plastic, the grouting was originally duct tape but I’ve peeled that off…

And, a lightbulb that flickers like a horror film and smells scarily dangerous!

I’ve finally saved enough money to deal with it, and the workman is popping round for a chat tomorrow, so I need some ideas!

Im hoping to bring the loo forward and 90 degrees to face the door, a false wall with maybe recessed shelves on the other side to use the lost space… Take out the bath and put the sink where it was.

The fun part is the decoration! This is the DCs loo (occasional guest use) so I can have a bit of fun here and would like some colour! I was wondering out terrazzo… would you tule the floor and the back wall in the same tile? Other ideas? I’m attaching a couple of pics from a tile shop I visited yesterday!

The ugliest bathroom in your house possibly........

sorcerersapprentice · 31/01/2023 07:02

I was expecting something really bad ...
That's not

HomeSeck · 31/01/2023 07:08

Your inspo/tiles look quite similar to what I've recently had done in the downstairs WC OP.

One thing I would say is that is has marked quite easily underfoot, though maybe less of a problem if you don't have shoes on upstairs!

I like that terrazzo.

Best of luck with your bathroom.

watchfulwishes · 31/01/2023 07:12

It is a very tricky space. Are you just having a cloakroom?

Personally I'd be wary of anything to visually overpowering in that small and unusual space - the bright graphic tiles could be too much.

Krakenes · 31/01/2023 07:12

Terrazzo does mark unfortunately. If it’s an occasional bathroom, I think you can go a bit more ‘fun’ than that with the tiles!

QuentininQuarantino · 31/01/2023 07:15

Really?! Plastic ceiling tiles, no ventilation, square stained bath, dangerous electrics and useless loo not that bad!? Lucky me! Still, after 30 years of service, it has done its time.

@HomeSeck that looks gorgeous! Thank you, I love the black hardware! I’ll going to save that pic if that’s ok. I love the dark walls with it.

Loo is in the attic so unlikely to have shoes but it’s good to know, is that because it’s hydraulic? I’ve seen ceramic terrazzo, might that solve the issue? Also being terrazzo, presumably it hides it okay!

Love that light shade, @HomeSeck Where's it from?

Agree with this.

Snoken · 31/01/2023 07:19

Is that a curtain rail in the sloping ceiling? How would the curtain stay up?

Anyways, I think I would go quite bold and do a Moroccan tiled floor but mono-coloured walls and the ceiling just white (including the slope). I think I'd go for an olive green type of colour on the walls and floor tiles that picks that colour up somewhere.

QuentininQuarantino · 31/01/2023 07:24

It is a curtain rail for a sloping ceiling, yes!

The bathroom is in an upstairs, attic conversion and will be used mostly by DC but there is a guest room up there (no en-suite). For the showers we have a bigger bathroom, so I was sort of thinking I could take more risks upstairs as it’s in a playroom, and have a more grown up, classic main bathroom when the time (money) comes to renovate that one.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 31/01/2023 07:30

Thats not too bad, but impractical but okay!

Our one and only bathroom was officially declared the worst bathroom our bathroom fitter had ever dealt with🤣🤣 I can raise your 30 years, it was nearer 60 years plus for all but the loo, lead pipes and all.

I think in a small space neutral is better. We just went for boring light grey tiles on floor and walls and dark grey cupboard and sink unit. It’s awesome now but cost a bomb.

springerspanielpuppy · 31/01/2023 07:58

It's your DC's toilet ffs, some families don't even have exclusive use of a toilet! I get that you're excited but lets not pretend it's ghastly.

trulyunruly01 · 31/01/2023 08:07

I have the same set up here.
The biggest difference you could make would be to have a roof window put in.
Concealed cistern and built in basin unit to streamline and for storage.
Is it a bath or a shower cubicle? We went with a bath with shower over (at the high end obviously), we just about had room for a glass shower screen. We felt a cubicle would again make the room look too cell-like.
I have fairly plain tiles with a jazzier line at half height.

CakeCrumbs44 · 31/01/2023 08:15

Well it's better than my DCs bathroom as they don't have one 😂
I don't think I would go for highly patterned tiles in such a small space, just something classic and plain. Can you put in a sky light as I think that would make a huge difference to the feel of the room.

Beseen22 · 31/01/2023 08:27

Do you need a bath or a shower in that room at all? I'd put a bath under the eaves, you don't need height in a bath because you are lying down in it. Then I would put a vanity sink with storage to the right were the bath was and put the toilet where the sink was. If you can afford it I'd put in a roof light window as it does look a wee bit claustrophobic then maybe keep the tiles fairly neutral but I don't think it has to be plain white just because it's a small space, they can look pretty cool all decorated.

If you look up the last one I've attached a photo of on insta there's a video and I don't think it would be much bigger than yours.

Love visually overwhelming in a small space. I have really large patterned tropical wallpaper in our smallest loo!

QuentininQuarantino · 31/01/2023 09:10

Ok @springerspanielpuppy it’s a bit of hyperbole for a thread title in the home decoration section 🙄

I would LOVE to put in a roof window but I don’t think I’m allowed as we live in flats so the roof isn’t actually ours, plus my budget is 2k…!

@Beseen22 I am taking the bath out, it’s against building regs as there’s no vent so my insurance doesn’t cover it, so we can’t use it! It’s basically an under-stairs loo but upstairs in the flat (duplex). We have a flat with an attic conversion. The ceiling isn’t insulated either and damp could be an issue. I plan to put a sink and vanity where you mentioned, but I don’t think they can move the loo too much because of it being upstairs and the waste pipe having to stay where it is, I’m hoping they can bring it slightly further forward though and facing the door…

When I say my “DC bathroom” it isn’t a mega mansion, it’s a 3 bed flat with a very badly (against building regs) attic conversion. The attic has DC room and this loo. There hasn’t been ANY electricity upstairs since we moved in, after finally saving enough to have it rewired safely, i have enough leftover to do up the loo.

I would totally go all out with the bathroom tiles/pattern. A small bathroom is the place to go wild, not safe!

ArianahX · 31/01/2023 09:40

I looked round a studio flat and I turned it down... the bathroom had busy lime green & yellow swirly 70s wallpaper & clashing flooring with NO window.
I wish I'd taken a photo.

The worst bathroom I actually lived with was in a shared flat where the ceiling was literally black with mould & multiple blowflies appeared out of a hole in the floor.
The landlord literally painted over the mould and I had to fill in the floor hole.
Soon moved out of there!!

I don't know. I imagine the price would take into account the undesirable bathroom and then it's so nice to be able to plan a bathroom from scratch. I'd enjoy it anyway and build storage in.

ArianahX · 31/01/2023 11:06

@ouch321 it was a rental with the 70s bathroom and no redecoration allowed!! I don't know why.

superdupernova · 31/01/2023 14:48

Oh that's a tricky space to work with.

I love terrazzo tiles. If it might get damp, maybe you could look at shower panels/ shower walls instead? Saves you dealing with grout.

That´s a great suggestion, the tiles I looked at yesterday came in enormous (panel, I think), normal square and hexagon versions. I do like the hexagons, but I want to think practically!

I hope (!) that with the bath gone, the damp won´t be a problem....
