Painting sitting room - is dark blue still a good bet?

My home is far from fashionable, but I'd still prefer to use colours that are up to date... Pinterest is full of dark blue painted rooms and they do look lovely. But are there are any other colours I should consider, will blue stay on trend for at least a year or two?
Thanks!

This kind of colour, for clarity.

Personally I don't think dark anything is ever a good choice for a living room.

Tastes differ, obviously, but I'd go with a colour you like and feel comfortable with rather than one that's fashionable.

If in doubt, keep it light.

Thank you. I wouldn't have thought of dark colours until I saw so many photos of them, seemed a nice change from gray!
Everything is just white at the moment so any change will seem quite dramatic Smile

I have it but more block colour that moody Victoriana, not the most up to date but I really like it still.

Does it matter if it’s up to date if you like it? I’m obsessed with deep jewel tones, especially greens, blues and teals, especially paired with gold or copper. I don’t think you’ll regret it and it’s not deadly dull like this obsession for grey that’s going on!

IME dark colours sometimes work better on instagram than in life. I've just painted my bedroom a strong green. In photos it looks a beautiful colour, but TBH it's a bit depressing at this time of year, even with light floors/above picture rail/curtains/linen. I still love it, but it's oddly harder to live with than a pale colour.

My living room and dining room have been dark blue and a parchment shade for about 20 years, Its just been plastered and its going back the same
It looks very similar to the photo.
Living room half is the blue up to the picture rail, above the picture rail and ceiling is parchment. Cream curtains, sofas and carpet
Dining room half the blue is on the chimney breast wall and above the picture rail. Below the rail is parchment.
I do have high ceilings and a large windows.
I love it - very cosy in winter

Ours is this colour and cream. Think it was dulux sapphire salute. I love it and people comment on how nice it is

we have v dark blue and love it, no plans to change. We have just had work done that required redecoration and stuck with same colour. It is cosy and any amount of painting a light colour wouldn't have made the winter months less depressing.

Do put up loads of testers though. The colour I thought I wanted looked terrible (F & B Inchyra Blue). We ended up with Valspar Night Swim which I wasnt initially fussed about, but it changes in the light and we love it.

I know what you mean about not being overly fussed with fashion but wanting to be up to date. It is taking us so long to sort our house that I worry that what I have chosen for other areas will be horribly dated soon!

We have denim drift, Egyptian cotton and lots of oak. Looks beautiful and isn't quite as dark as navy.

Notmenottodaynotever · 22/10/2022 18:57

Thank you all, very useful ideas and advice! Yes, I will tester-away and see how it looks in our room. Last time I decorated beiges and browns were still the most popular colours so I need a lift Smile

Bold greens and blues are very on trend at the moment. Particularly when paired with the current trend for panelling. I don't know if I'd be brave enough to do an entire room in such a dark colour but maybe a feature wall I would.

ohforthelife · 22/10/2022 19:34

I've got Dulux winter sky on one wall and really like it.

OdkinsBodkins · 22/10/2022 21:19

No, it's dreadful.

People are moving away from the grey and dark blue trend and it doesn't look good in estate agency photos in your average flat or house (if you might be thinking of selling in the lifetime of the paint job which ought to be 10 years+ and my mother managed to get 20 years out of hers before it started to look tired). In most UK homes with average sized rooms, average sized windows, average light levels from daylight, and average lighting, they become dreary at certain times of day, and even SAD-inducing especially in the winter.

pompomdaisy · 22/10/2022 21:20

Hague blue. Farrow & Ball

Ah now a darker feature wall that isn't too time consuming or expensive to repaint if it doesn't work for you, that is a good idea :D For me it wouldn't be grey or navy, but it could work.

Notmenottodaynotever · 22/10/2022 21:22

@OdkinsBodkins what would you recommend? I mean, that's less bad for if we sell? (I don't think we will sell - it's more can I be bothered redoing it in a few years, so I need to want it to stay!)

Dark rocks but make sure you paint your ceiling, skirting and doors the same colour, Then watch the transformation.

EstellaRijnveld · 22/10/2022 21:49

My bedroom is painted antique gold from the crown heritage range. It's a really beautiful colour which changes because of the light at different times of the day. It's a neutral colour which works with most other colours so stands the test of time better than fashion trends.

EstellaRijnveld · 22/10/2022 21:50

alwaysmovingforwards · 22/10/2022 21:55

I keep the walls light / neutral and then use artwork to add colour / mood.

AlwaysLatte · 22/10/2022 21:56

We have that colour in our snug, although it has its annoyances - if anything dings it, the white underneath shows up and its needed more touching up than any other room. But it is cosy!

Tillsforthrills · 22/10/2022 21:57

Oval room blue is beautiful paired with white masonry.

Beige/browns/neutrals are what's back in 😁.
