Struggling to decorate small (but high ceilinged) toilet room

It's the one toilet that most people will visit...

I'm not a fan of grey.

There's no window (there is a fan!), just a sink and a toilet - no space for anything else. The ceilings are really high. The walls are plasterboard - it was built as an addition, rather than an original feature of the house

I think I should get a mirror opposite the door, but I'm stuck for a colour/ style.

Any ideas?

A toilet room, never heard it called that before. I’d be funky and go for bright colours but I like colour

Belindabelle · 18/10/2022 19:06

I would go dark. With no natural light it will be hard to try and make it seem light and airy so go dark and moody.

Dark blue, green or red? Brass, gold and copper are popular at the moment for accessories. Yes get a mirror or cover the walls in lots of little gold framed mirrors and pictures. Small wall shelf with fancy hand soap and lotion.

Quirky wallpaper can look great in a small space. Old maps or newspapers can work well.

I went to Paris recently and was inspired by the bathroom in our boutique hotel.

A high ceiling is screaming for a chandelier.

I have a tiny loo downstairs. It has tiles in a warm white up to dado rail height, bright orangey red walls and a huge mad mirror with ornate silver carvings. It was too small to do anything other than go a bit nuts, really.

Not sure what else to call it - it’s a very small room with just a toilet and sink in!

Very interesting that the consensus has been to go bold and bright! Not an option I had thought about

Some crazy wallpaper plus tiles behind the sink of course.

How about a jungle theme with large green leaves on a white background? Green handtowel and accessories.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 18/10/2022 20:57

What is the rest of your decor like?

I'd go serene and spa-like with wainscoting, sage green, a mirror in a chippy frame, a shelf for candles or fragrance oils. Silver-tone metals for fixtures.

I am not sure I would like to look at myself sitting on a toilet.

Two weeks ago, I visited a friend in Amsterdam, and she has the smallest toilet ever and on the door, there isa birthday calendar taking the whole length. Next to each day there is an empty space with a few names here and there. It looked nice and it made me happy to see my name written on it!

She also has psychedelic wallpaper which made the toilet look bigger.

berksandbeyond · 18/10/2022 21:28

Our downstairs toilet is farrow and ball stiffkey blue and I love it

vipersnest1 · 18/10/2022 21:35

All white, with a really pretty mirror in a position where it's useful (above the sink?) but you're not looking at yourself sitting on the look as a PP said.
I'd second the feature light.
If you don't want to go chandelier there are some lovely white plastic shades that you can get that look really good (will post a pic of mine in a while).
Dot around some small plants if you have room (shelf?) and put some pictures up - monochrome or grey scale would look good against the white.
To offset the white, get an attractive blind that brings out the features and colours. (I have a gold hand towel out to use, so got a blind that tones with that colour).

Here my downstairs loo. (The Good Housekeeping sticker on the mirror is an in-joke!)

Oh, and you can just see the towel in the corner of one picture.
The lampshade is a self-assembly one that I got from Amazon.

Mapleapple · 18/10/2022 21:41

I would go for a mad highly patterned, brightly coloured wallpaper. The rest of my house is white and I’d love a downstairs loo. I’d make it such a mad contrast people weren’t expecting.

greenacrylicpaint · 18/10/2022 21:42

big mirror or even mirror tiles on one wall?

tiles up to hip height to break up the height a bit?
or wood panelling if you decide against tiles.

yerdaindicatesonbends · 18/10/2022 21:43

i really like when I see small toilets with really bright daring wallpaper. I think it’s one place you can take a risk as you’re not staring at it all the time (hopefully) and could be something fun for guests to see. You don’t have to take it all the way up and if you leave a fairly thick border around the top, which can be painted a colour along with the ceiling, it can make a room look a little bigger.

Do one wall in this gorgeous carp wall paper and then paint the others in a toning colour

Look on Pinterest...search for small downstairs loo / toilet. Loads of images to really help you choose something to like

PurBal · 19/10/2022 13:24

Ours is navy! Striking against the white sanitary ware

Itisbetter · 19/10/2022 13:26

Paint it like it’s the inside of a tower and harness your inner princess?

pattihews · 19/10/2022 13:33

Not a mirror on the back of the loo door, surely? What a horrible view.

Not keen on novelty loos — flashy wallpaper, clashing colours. You might end up having to sit there surrounded by all the visual noise for some time. I prefer calm. Muted, greyish pale greens or blues, knocked-back ochre maybe.

Tiling can make the acoustics very sharp and if it's just off a hallway, say, people might feel a bit more comfortable if every noise from the loo wasn't amplified by ceramics. Painted wood panelling would help that.

MissFritton65 · 19/10/2022 15:44

I live in an Edwardian house with very high ceilings and our downstairs toilet is very small. I was worried that the bold paper and navy tiles/paintwork would make it seem even smaller but it doesn't! I've had so many positive comments about it.

Oooh. Thank you so much for the photos and ideas!

I want to clear things up before reading properly - I mean a mirror hung over the toilet, so behind your back when sitting in it. When you're sitting on the toilet, your knees aren't far from the door... And the sink is to the left - very close. There's a little mirror above that, but I thought a large mirror opposite the door might add a feeling of space to the room?
