I am planning on revamping this part of the kitchen.

Wallswill be LG hellebore
There will be a galley of pictures on the main back wall
Tv will be mounted on left wall above the radiator.

I want to get rid of the sofa and tables. Would you for two matching chairs like this or mismatched?

Any suggestions for a light fitting as well?

Can you do anything with the floor? It all looks a bit 'dentist waiting room' and I'm not sure the new chairs will help that.

hopeishere · 15/10/2022 16:55

No, the floor is the same throughout the hall and kitchen. Don't have the budget to change it.

I would keep an eye out for a couple of similar but not matched chairs on freecycle. I have seen some super ones being given away. You can reupholster if you fee brave!

hopeishere · 15/10/2022 17:19

Re the floor, I might get a rug.

And I meant gallery not galley!!

Any other ideas or suggestions on how to "de-dentist" this area?!

I would go breakfast bar on the back wall with stools and a massive rug on the floor in between

Mosaic123 · 16/10/2022 10:09

Chairs should be easy to clean, being in the kitchen.

I would keep the sofa but get rid of everything else and put down a very large rug to cover as much floor as possible.
Change the curtains to shutters and get a lovely footstool to go in front of the sofa in a complimentary colour and some new plush scatter cushions on the sofa .
The TV is way too small to walk mount so I would just remove it or get a larger one to wall mount.
A different light fixture too that is a statement and possibly a standing lamp in one corner.

Inca22 · 16/10/2022 10:28

The wall colour is really nice but the floor isn't I'm afraid! If you won't replace (I'd use any budget I had to do that) then get a rug and remove the red accent blind and light pendant. I'd do what others have suggested - get a bigger tv if you're going to wall mount it (too small currently) and change out the furniture to something more muted and complimentary.

Nothingbuttheglory · 16/10/2022 10:32

I'd think about a radiator cover. A gallery of pictures on that wall will definitely help.

hopeishere · 16/10/2022 10:52

Yes the tv will be bigger. This isn't our sitting are we have a separate sitting room. There's an island just out of shot with bar stools so I don't want to repeat that.

Am going to lose the curtains. Standing lamp is a good idea.
The floor isn't as bad as it looks in the photos!

I have a very similar floor to you in my kitchen - off white limestone type tiles. You have my sympathy - I hate mine with a passion and it's very hard to keep clean - I think the sealant has worn off and it looks grimy a lot of the time. (Not chosen by me - they were here when we bought the house in 2019 and it's too much of an upheaval to get them changed). I agree about the rug - this is how I have solved the problem - I bought two enormous jute rugs from Dunelm and accessorised with burlap type runner for the table. It takes the clinical edge off it. I agree about getting some lovely cushions and throws - they can make such a difference.

Snoken · 16/10/2022 11:21

Do you have a dining area? Otherwise that would be the obvious choice for that part of the room. You could make it look really nice, with a large rug, some plants, something like this:

Yes we have a separate dining room. I think the issue is the furniture is all black so it sort of sucks the colour away. I want either a sofa or chairs that are open underneath to add more space / light.

I agree about having it as a nice dining area. A large table with chairs will cover a large proportion of the floor tiles. Add plants and a mirror as per the above pic and it will look great. Maybe a couple of large prints on the far wall.
I would lose the TV and paint the rad in with the wall or add a shelf above it to make it blend better.

CatGrins · 16/10/2022 11:42

What about a banquette style seating area and table? I think it's nice to have a table to sit at in the kitchen. Big rug underneath and bigger TV in the wall, also the radiator cover is a good shout.

hopeishere · 16/10/2022 11:45

I'm not keen on banquette style. And we have a separate dining room. I'll definitely investigate a radiator cover though.

That paint colour is gorgeous! You could have patterned chairs or sofa with that or a bright solid colour on them like a nice yellow, like in the sofa in the link below, or green. Have a look at Sophie Robinson for how she uses colour, if that's the way you want to go

hopeishere · 16/10/2022 12:00

Do you mean the green? I'm actually changing the paint. It's been that colour for years (cooking apple green - F&B) to Hellebore by LG www.littlegreene.com/hellebore

OP posts:
longtompot · 16/10/2022 12:09

@hopeishere Sorry, I meant the Hellebore colour. What colour is your kitchen, walls and cabinets?

hopeishere · 16/10/2022 13:16

Th cabinets are sort of cream but more yellow cream. All wall currently the green. Can't wait to get rid of it!!

How about getting a radiator cover and doing the gallery wall or have narrow shelves above that and place two chairs slightly angled towards each other in front of the radiator facing into the garden. Low table or footstool in front of the chairs. An upholstered bench is handy as it can be a footstool, table or provide extra seating.

I am not keen on tv’s on walls as I find them too high to view comfortably when sitting down so I would put tv on a unit in the corner where the plant is or where the sofa is. If you put the tv above radiator won’t the light from the window shine on it?

Big mirror or painting on the wall where the sofa is now. Standard lamp in the corner. Big rug to cover the floor. I would go for a natural jute or sisal rug and maybe a rattan type lampshade. More plants around too as the green will look great against the pink walls.

hopeishere · 16/10/2022 14:33

I like idea of an upholstered bench. The reason the sofa faces that way is generally so the person pottering in the kitchen can look at the person on the sofa. I guess chairs would be flexible either way. Good point about the reflection from the doors on the tv 🤔
