I am planning on revamping this part of the kitchen.

Wallswill be LG hellebore
There will be a galley of pictures on the main back wall
Tv will be mounted on left wall above the radiator.

I want to get rid of the sofa and tables. Would you for two matching chairs like this or mismatched?

Any suggestions for a light fitting as well?

I think replacing the sofa with something lighter in colour and more "leggy" is a good idea to brighten up that corner of the room. For similar reasons a nice neutral rug and replacing the coffee and side tables with some less clunky and lighter wood furniture would be a good call. A floor lamp may enable the area to seem cosy at night.

I like the pp's suggestion of a radiator cover, perhaps with a couple of well chosen ornaments on it with the TV mounted above.

Updating the curtains and lampshade also necessary due to your new paint colour.

I think it has potential to be a very cosy nook but in order to fit into the kitchen I think it requires less clunky (and maybe less rectangular) pieces to soften it out

@hopeishere

The sofa is a terrible terrible colour, I totally missed your gorgeous dog on there!

Though I suspect a light coloured sofa will drive you insane!!

Radiator covers are terrible for absorbing heat, so quite a waste! Do you have the funds to swap it out for a vertical? Then maybe put a bookcase or narrow cabinet along that wall?

I don't personally like leggy chairs & in the nicest possible way, solid chairs or a different sofa would help to cover up those tiles.

id go with a cosy rug & side tables (rather than the big coffee table) & definitely a totally different style of light fitting.

I think a cosy rug and a sofa in a different colour. I prefer that to chairs. Cosy throw on sofa and nice lamps. Think texture. Either neutral or colour if you like that more. Pinterest is great.

hopeishere · 23/10/2022 09:36

I'm making a list!

Keep
Plant Smile

Definite changes
Rug
Light fitting
Remove / change curtains
Change seating
get rid of tables x3 - get smaller table
Bigger tv - wall mount
Reframe pictures x2

Possible changes
Floor lamp
Radiator cover

Im not a throw person - too much time re folding them to look neat! This isn't our sitting room so it doesn't need to be super cosy.

I think it’s mainly the magazines that are making it look like a waiting room, so a little magazine tidy or a coffee table with a shelf underneath or drawers would sort that out.

Definitely add as big a rug as you can afford.

Think about interest at different heights and where the eye is drawn to. At the moment the eye is drawn to the low height of the sofa and the ceiling line, and those two lines feel unsettling because there’s in between for the eye to rest on in amongst the expanse of the wall. The picture above the sofa is too small to draw the eye because the proportions are off. I would add some interest in between these two height lines to ease the eye and add interest. It could be a tall plant and a floor lamp (e.g. Arco style), or a corner table with a big lamp on it. Basically anything as tall as the mid point between the sofa height and the ceiling.

The picture above the sofa is far too small for the space - it looks dwarfed against the expanse of the wall so the proportions are all off. Get a picture as large as you can afford to fill the space, or do a gallery wall. If going for a sofa, the picture mustn’t be wider than the sofa.

If you’re not sure about proportions, read up on the golden ratio - we’re hardwired to love it so other proportions will feel off - www.homesandgardens.com/advice/the-golden-ratio

Unless you’re allergic, always go for feather pads for cushions - cheap from Dunelm - plump cushions add luxury, flat cushions look so unhappy!

I love the chairs and the Hellebore colour! Have fun :)

LadyEloise1 · 23/10/2022 10:02

Won't you be craning your neck watching the tv over the radiator if you put chairs where the sofa is and put a tv on that wall ?

hopeishere · 23/10/2022 10:11

I am going to do a picture wall / gallery on the wall where the sofa is! I hate that table with a passion. It's an absolute dust trap and it's on castors so moves about all the time!!

We're going to get one of the brackets for the tv so it can move about. I envisage a chair sort of angled with its back to the doors to watch tv. Or an sofa to lie on!

I always go for similar, but not matching chairs/sofas. It looks much better.

E.g. in my living room the sofas are the same physical style, but upholstered in different fabrics. Colours are complimentary, not identical

And if you are allergic, or if you have allergic house visitors, go for sheep's wool.

Agree with this. Only use a radiator cover if you're happy to be cold!

There was a radiator cover in the living room when we moved into out current house, and it was utterly freezing (we're up north).

CatGrins · 15/10/2022 16:51

Can you do anything with the floor? It all looks a bit 'dentist waiting room' and I'm not sure the new chairs will help that.

That's very mean

AbsoluteTruths · 23/10/2022 10:26

Who sits in that area? What I mean is, does it get used regularly by kids/guests/you?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 23/10/2022 10:35

Those chairs do not look particularly comfortable, wooden arms are very confining and not that great to rest on. Two chairs are much more flexible than a sofa though. Benches are okay if you have a ramrod back of iron and never want to slump.

I would get a specifically kitchen rug so it can be cleaned easily, two armchairs that match ( non matching is only okay in a larger area) and a low table, so you have somewhere to rest your cup. Do you have a shelf of cookery books already, because that is a good place for them. When I had a big kitchen dining room we had two armchairs with a standard lamp and a small low table ( and a CD player) with a bookcase, I used to do all the menu planning and browsing there.

hopeishere · 23/10/2022 10:41

I mostly sit in here. I'm not a cookbook person so don't really have any to display!

Anywhere you wouldn't recommend for rugs?

AbsoluteTruths · 23/10/2022 10:49

If it's mostly your zone, what about a vintage rug from Ebay, maybe an oriental? Some swing arm lamps/wall lamps would be good for reading. I agree with getting the comfiest chairs for relaxing in.

Belindabelle · 23/10/2022 15:30

I have been looking for rugs recently. Dunelm and John Lewis have a good selection. IKEA used to be good for rugs too but that was a while ago.

hopeishere · 07/05/2023 09:07

The transformation has begun! New bigger wall mounted TV! Sofa and table have gone. Curtains gone.

Still deciding re furniture and rugs and whether or not to do the gallery wall.

The paint looks very dark but it's not there's stuff on the windows covering them and keeping the light out.

Love that colour. I’d probably go for 2 larger armchairs than a sofa - raised off the floor for maximum light, and positioned in the corners slightly angled toward each other.

Inca22 · 07/05/2023 17:28

Love that colour!! Can't wait to see final photos

LibertyLily · 07/05/2023 17:52

Looking good! Lovely colour (what is it?), although a bit disappointed you didn't go with Hellebore in the end (I'm partial to Hellebore as we used it for the front door at a previous house!)

A huge rug is definitely your friend here - to cover as much of those tiles as possible. I'd either go for a colourful Persian style (vintage would be my preference) or possibly jute/sisal - although a word of warning about the fringed jute rugs. We chose a massive fringed one (identical to those in Dunelm but they were out of stock so we found an online retailer with the same ones) for our kitchen but within 28 months the fringe has unravelled as it is frequently walked upon.

I quite like the idea of the flexibility of a pair of large, snuggly armchairs, but equally a jolly-coloured sofa could look great too. We have a teal velvet sofa (the discontinued Dante from M&S) in our kitchen which has F&B Oval Room Blue lower cabinets and island and we've brightened the whole space up with a bright red range cooker and cushions in pink, teal and green. We also have some yellow art/vases etc to add further spashes of colour.

Can't wait to see your finished space!

hopeishere · 07/05/2023 18:11

It's selvedge by F&B. My all male household vetoed the hellebore!!

I've my eye on a vintage rug actually - Persian style.

Also need to replace the red light fitting.

Nice colour. I do quite like the red shade with it tbh

Selvedge is lovely...great substitute for the vetoed Hellebore 😁

Looking forward to seeing your rug (and light fitting) choices too. You can't beat a vintage Persian rug - we love ours!

I quit like the floor tiles. It's the dark grouting that makes them look a bit dated, I think. Could you regrout in white/light beige?
