How can I de-grey my living room!

I am soooo fed up of my grey living room but really struggling with how to change it up. We have grey carpet and grey sofas (very similar but not identical to the ones pictured) which we can’t afford to replace at the moment. I would love to warm up the room, ideally I’d have a warm stone/beige-y/cream colour on the walls but would this clash with the light grey sofas? It’s an average sized room in a modern house, one of the long walls is papered, and needs to stay papered as the wall is a mess! We can put new paper up though. Hoping to get some tips or pics for inspiration to get it looking nice and cosy. TIA!

We have basically those sofas and put throws on the to jazz them up a bit (and protect from toddler mess).

instead of beige look up which colours would go with grey - dusky pink, navy ? I’m not good at interiors but just some ideas! We have grey bed and carpet in our bedroom, with white and dusky pink walls, love it!

Yup you need colour not another neutral

( need == my preference)

prettyteapotsplease · 07/08/2022 09:15

A cheap way to jazz it up would be with colourful cushions and throws - you never know, they might make the grey look good by their very presence.

TheOGCCL · 07/08/2022 09:18

Is it a patterned wallpaper? Is this grey?

KittyCatsby · 07/08/2022 09:18

Change the cushions and rug , add pops of colour where you can.

Isonthecase · 07/08/2022 09:19

I'd pick out the undertone in the grey and get a colour matching that. So if it's a warm grey you could get a warm blush colour. Otherwise you're in jazzy cushion territory which personally I love but suspect you don't because grey on grey is my worst nightmare 🤣

I would just start with a few accessorise and see how you feel about a colour. I always really like mint green, pale blues and lilacs, cool pastel colours, which I thought would work well with pale grey, it made the room feel very cold, and looked like a children's chalk drawing, but I found mustard yellow and deep charcoal actually worked a lot better with my pale grey and felt more warm and inviting. I put the pastel coloured accessorise in my daughters room instead. I've recently become really into peachy colours and am going to switch it out to some black and peach home wares and some wallpaper, so a totally different aesthetic, but the mustard and charcoal was a great way to start going from Grey to being more brave with colours. My daughter loves her pastel rainbow bedroom too so win win!

Is that your home? It’s nice but very platonic with no character or a stamp it belongs to people and not something from a magazine that’s standard and a blank canvas.

If it was me, I’ll change the photo on the wall to real art and something that has colour/a nice interesting scene. Hang some throws over the arms of the chair, change that lamp and put in a coffee table, pref with a wooden top that’s got good grain and interest in it.

I’d either add colour by changing - the rug, cushions, lampshades, pictures or mirrors.
Or if it really does look like the room in the picture, I’d paint the walls tranquil dawn (grey/green) and leave everything else if you like a neutral kind of look. And update then when things wear out/break/you can afford it.

Accessorise it with a bold colour, my living room s white and grey with mustard accessories eg rug, lamp, cushions, candles.

my sis in law has accessorised hers with baby pink,

Crochetandcoke · 07/08/2022 09:47

My bedroom is blush, grey and white, because it was grey and white aesthetic. Blush pink does look lovely with grey and white

Vicliz24 · 07/08/2022 10:03

I love sage with grey . Then you could add pink and blush accessories. The walls would be great in sage green.

SushiGo · 07/08/2022 10:10

Whatever colour you choose go for something with a warm base tone as that will most transform the look of the room. We went for an earthy pink and woods in a similar room and it looks a million times more homely.

purpleurple · 07/08/2022 10:15

Wow so many responses already! You are probably all right about the walls needing to be a colour rather than neutral. I have pink cushions/rug at the moment and it does warm it up a bit but it still feels so stark and cold. Maybe a not-too-pinky-pink on the walls is the way to go

And yes the wallpaper is patterned and also bloody grey! 🙈

Any recommendations for a nice ‘grown up’ pink?

hotfroth · 07/08/2022 10:18

The obvious answer is cushions! The more the merrier, and a variety of co-ordinating patterns and colours. If you have a table lamp then buy a new lampshade for it. Plants always help too, as green goes with everything.

MrsHaroldRobbins · 07/08/2022 10:25

I would get a few big plants and some jewel coloured big squishy cushions - maybe cerise pink or teal? And cover the grey wallpaper with a bold patterned one, something like PP's pics. And some lamps with warm shades. Just my preference though!

Pbbananabagel · 07/08/2022 10:36

Go with a ‘plaster’ type pink (wall plaster not the sticky kind) then use deeper pink accents and contrast with a bright emerald green

JuneOsborne · 07/08/2022 10:39

My current favourite paint colour is sulking room pink. We get it colour matched in valspar paint, so no F&B prices!

Badtasteflump · 07/08/2022 10:41

If you really want to maje a difference I would go for something bold like this.
