Moving house soon and my 2 year old is really excited to have a new bedroom. He keeps telling me, and everyone else, that it's going to be a yellow bedroom. Not sure where that's come from but it's his room so I'm happy to do it.
Please help! I've no idea how to make a yellow bedroom work. I don't think I'm brave enough to go bold but don't want to go paler and end up looking like magnolia. Does anyone have any ideas or inspiration? It's never a colour I've used before.

We’ve just painted out spare room in a knock off of Dorset Cream from Farrow and Ball and it looks lovely - not an “in-your-face” acidy yellow, but definitely much more of a punch than a plain old magnolia.

Definitely get a tester though, as it look much more yellow in different light.

I have Dulux buttermilk downstairs. I think it's a good 'neutral' colour, very versatile. Does look different in different light (eg one room is north facing, one is south facing).

sorryiasked · 03/08/2022 08:03

He's 2, it needs to be bright otherwise he won't think it's "yellow"
Why not paint one wall sunshine and white on the other walls and then get duvet/rug/pictures in yellow so it's not too overpowering.

I’d go bold! Bright colours are fab. Some bright bedding and storage as well. Have a look at Pinterest for ideas. A toddler wouldn’t perceive pale buttermilk or whatever as yellow.

Also you don't need choose the acidic yellow (I'm not fan of that either), but warmer yellow, something like this perhaps?

That's so sweet. I wonder if he misheard something along the way or had a dream that he thinks is real? Can you sit down with him over some pictures? That may help him to prepare for it to not be yellow immediately and in the meantime it gives you a clearer direction for what he has in mind. I love my memories of my childood bedroom. I think it was yellow first and then pink.

Yellow is a fab colour. Go scandi themed too

florianfortescue · 03/08/2022 08:28

We went for a mustard colour in one bedroom, with navy blue headboard and blinds. It looks brilliant, it's my favourite room! We did try a few samples though - paint a sheet of A4 and hold it up to the walls. I thought we wanted India Yellow F&B but we actually ended up going one shade lighter in the end. It's lovely - bright in the summer and cosy in the winter.

cornflakegirl · 03/08/2022 08:30

Let him choose the colour. If you're going to the effort of painting, it might as well be the colour he wants! Both my boys have bright colours in their bedrooms, it looks great.

Isonthecase · 03/08/2022 08:32

@florianfortescue which shade did you go? We have the little Greene equivalent of India yellow and planning to tone it down!

yikesanotherbooboo · 03/08/2022 08:33

Agree that if he feels he is involved in the decision you can go with it. Does it have to 'work' on an adult basis?

Sudbury Yellow I think it was.

In DD's room we painted the walls white but all the woodwork (windows and shelves) in Babouche, so another yellow. That could be an option OP?

Yellow goes lovely with grey, bright sunshine yellow accessories and muted grey walls. I have this in my spare room it looks lovely. Perhaps a rug in the shape of a sun and some sunshine and cloud decals on the walls. Keep it bright and cheery.

Just paint it yellow for him. You can always redecorate in years to come.

We did our daughters bedroom in Valspar Cup o Custard and it was lovely and bold. We've repainted now she's older and I'm gutted it's gone. Was like walking into sunshine.....

Dilbertian · 03/08/2022 08:48

Whenever I've had rooms that get minimal direct light, north facing, for example, or 'corridors' with no windows, I've used yellow on the walls. It's such a cheerful, sunny colour.

My dcs' first bedroom was big, but faced north and had dark aquamarine fitted carpet and crimson velour curtains, neither of which I could afford to replace. I painted the walls a sunny yellow and the woodwork gloss white. There was an orange rug on the floor, and pictures with orange, yellow and blue in them on the walls. The furniture was all pale wood or navy-blue or lilac. Ikea!

It was a lovely room. Bright, but not gaudy.

Raggeo · 03/08/2022 09:55

Some good ideas. Thank you. Sounds like I should embrace the bold and just go for it. He did tell me yesterday that it was going to have yellow walls, ceiling, window and door and light! Definitely a few steps too far but I think those saying it will need to be a bright yellow to match what he imagines are right. He thinks the playroom should be orange so that will be a whole new thread. I'm not letting him have an opinion on the other rooms.

DC 1 asked for a yellow bedroom with rainbow wallpaper on one wall. It looks great. DC (age 4) chose Dulux brushed gold which us a rich ochre yellow.

Crumpleton · 03/08/2022 15:19

Sounds like he definitely wants a very yellow room.
Yellow walls yes, sounds like it'll be lovely bright and warm.
I'm a white ceiling and woodwork person but a nice navy/dark blue for accessories, fabrics, light/lamp shades goes well with yellow.

Hey I have used Victory colours a few times now and they have some stunning yellow colours, I do think a pale yellow is the nicest kind of yellow. They have one called Arcadia No. 38 it's not too in your face, there also eco friendly paints with no toxin's which is great if you painting a child's room! hope this helps :)

Yellow is a lovely colour for a bedroom, I had a yellow bedroom for years. It is warm and cheerful and goes with lots.

You can go quite bold without it being too in your face.

I had a few shades, but the best was a bright primrose yellow paired with green accents. Lighter lemon or sherbet work well or a banana milkshake colour.

Lovely that a child wants a colour that isn't pink or blue!

MavisMonkey · 03/08/2022 16:29

I love the idea of yellow for a child's bedroom. Made me think of this bed I saw on Argos recently.
Also painting half the wall or the popular "mountain" shapes could work well if you are nervous about all yellow walls.
