Help me snug my snug!

I have attached pictures of our new snug- formerly a small kitchen. Its the oldest room in the house and we thought it would make a lovely cosy snug but it’s missing something (or several things!). We have pictures for the wall, which will be added when we know what we want to put where.
I’m considering adding a plush curtain across the arched doorway to separate it slightly from the rest of the ground floor which is very light and fairly open plan. Do you think that will look ok?
What else do we need? Would you add a rug? What colour/style?
Lamps? We will definitely be adding plants- any suggestions? It’s a north facing room so gets very little natural sunlight.
The scruffy chest in the window is my little reading corner, I hide from my children there. I use the windowsill for my tea/wine 😄Suggestions of how to improve the look but keep the function would also be welcome!
I don’t think we want to move furniture around, it
could probably be better configured but my husband gets very grumpy when I raise the issue so I’m leaving that for now!
Our style is fairly traditional but we don’t want it to look too dated or formal. Cosy, traditional, warm and welcoming is the feeling we’re after. I also really like the boho and natural interior trends too, so we could lean into one of both of those? What would you do?

I’d lean into the dark and paint it a deep, dark colour. If you like the green feature wall go with that everywhere.

Yes to a rug - a big one. Lots of house plants. Change out the light fitting and add a floor lamp or good table lamps (which obviously will need tables) or both.

personally I wouldn’t do a curtain- but I love the arch shape.

Ideally I’d also move the furniture, ditch the tv unit and wall mount if possible with something lower and longer under it.

Happyandyouknowit82 · 31/07/2022 15:56

How old are your children?

personally I would have that as their play / tv room. Perfect for you to keep an ear out whilst In kitchen but also be alone

JudgeRindersMinder · 31/07/2022 15:56

Exactly everything @JustAnotherViper has said, especially a dark colour. A couple of cosy snuggly sofa throws would be good too

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/07/2022 15:57

Huge, multi-coloured rug.

Some bigger pictures, as well as the small ones,

I think the sofa would look nicer facing the chimney breast.

Happyandyouknowit82 · 31/07/2022 15:57

Personally if for me

i would get build in book shelving and have all my books there.

i would have my desk and a comfy chair in there.

and lots of beautiful art work.

but that is me.

children? I’d abandon the above until they are teens and prefer own roo.

ReeseWitherfork · 31/07/2022 16:00

Could you do sofa on green wall, tv in a unit in the alcove and an armchair under the window in the other alcove? Lots of this pictures on the wall the TV is currently up against? The rug and houseplants all sound great. And yes to a couple floor lamps!

Threelittlelambs · 31/07/2022 16:00

Darker walls, patterned rug, brighter cushions, the book case needs to be swapped for shelves - curtain the whole chair/window so a snug within a snug and the kids won’t find you!

Logs for the fire, log basket, selection of drinks, biscuit tin, sofa in front of the fire and paint the cupboard a darker colour.

You need it to be where you don’t need to leave unless you really have too.

ReeseWitherfork · 31/07/2022 16:02

Oh and sorry you did say you didn’t want to move furniture but that’s just what I’d do with it.

Plant…peace lilies do well with low light.

Threelittlelambs · 31/07/2022 16:03

Love the wallpaper in the first one and the rug in the second -

Fairy lights. Definitely fairy lights.

GOODCAT · 31/07/2022 16:11

Traditional Persian style rug but fairly light coloured, painted white built in shelving for a mix of books, plants and some kind of large object for a bit of personality, candles, lamps and a throw. Agree with putting the TV on a lower stand and bigger artwork. Colour definitely.

Binfire · 31/07/2022 17:23

Fantastic thanks loads. So the consensus is darker walls, more colour, plants and lamps and a big Persian style rug. Which colours would you add in? Would gold/ amber/ burgundy/burnt orange type of colours work?
Can anyone recommend places for large colourful prints for the wall? And rugs? I would prefer to see rugs in real life if possible.
Our children are older and are well catered for elsewhere, so there’s no chance they’re taking over this room too! I want it to be a bit of a refuge from them if anything.

The lamps will change the mood of that room considerably, as will tactile fabrics. Agree that TV stand doesn't fit.

Trivester · 31/07/2022 17:42

I’m not being remotely practical, just vicariously enjoying your lovely room:

I’d add bookshelves, preferably custom built around the arch and along that wall. I think the deeper arch that would be created would give you the separation from the rest of the house.

I’d cover the sofa with a slip cover, mostly because I don’t like it (and of course it’s fine if you do), and I’d add a lovely textured rug and some throws.

Your reading corner is perfect.

The tv would have to go….possibly the family as well.

I’d add a gorgeous brass reading light, and some lamps.

Where do you keep the wine? (It’s in the chest, right?)

Binfire · 31/07/2022 17:42

Would the tv stand be better painted another colour? Or is it the shape and size?

It looks tiny in the picture but it is fairly big. The TV is 50inches I think. I’ve attached another picture, sorry about the poor lighting.

Haha the wine is in the kitchen with the glasses, but I am considering a cut glass decanter of port for the reading corner! Now we’re talking my language 😂

I think the TV unit should be wider. The TV only just fits, I think it needs to be in something wider. I have the same problem here with a stupidly large TV and a not big enough unit so I may be projecting. But if you don't change it I would definitely paint it. Something darker to fit with the walls.

Imtoooldforallthis · 31/07/2022 17:51

I'd put the sofa facing the fire with some light coloured throws over the back, and if you've room a console table behind the sofa.

glamourousindierockandroll · 31/07/2022 17:52

I think the TV stand is a little too high - I would prefer it at eye level when you're sitting on the sofa.

The item itself is definitely nice as a sideboard.

I’d head to the second hand shops and mooch for old comfy chairs, throws and rugs - it’s a room that doesn’t need cleaning and you can slob about!

Binfire · 31/07/2022 18:00

I love the idea of a wall of bookshelves along the wall incorporating the arch, that would definitely help to separate it from the rest of the house. It’s out of reach cost-wise at the moment unfortunately but worth keeping in mind for the future. We can spend another two or three hundred pounds on this room but we haven’t got a lot left in the pot after a very expensive extension project!

There are high plugs on the wall for the tv to be wall mounted, so we could do that. And a slimmer, wider unit underneath? Dark wood or black maybe?

Ideally I would put the sofa facing the fire with a big coffee table in the middle and a couple of comfy chairs, and I’d get rid of the TV completely but I fear my husband might up and leave if there’s no TV in there for him!

Definitely think the TV needs to be opposite the fire (on the green wall yes?) and coffee table would work wonderfully as you’ve not got toddlers touching everything on there! Can you fit a little TV in a unit in the alcove or is it too narrow?
