Help need with 11 year old’s single bed!

Really looking for some advice/recommendations for a teen boys single bed to fit a small room that actually has quite low ceilings too, so a double whammy! Think mid sleepers might make it look small and high sleepers will not fit but need some storage ( drawers would be good) and maybe a shelf?! I’ve looked at the habitat day but says you need loads of room to build it, so that’s out! Please can someone recommend something useful and stylish?! Is that even possible?! So hoping MN will come up with the answer!

Could you get a double bed that had storage under it?

Justkeeppedaling · 02/03/2022 17:14

Or a single bed that you can build some storage under.

IKEA have all sorts of clever storage solutions for small spaces - have you looked there?
Also, is there anywhere else you could keep his clothes for example? Landing? Your room?

Iggly · 02/03/2022 17:17

My 10 year old has a small room. But we’ve managed to fit in a single bed with under storage, a desk, wardrobe and shelves.

She wanted a cabin bed but I said no. Too small. The room is about 2m wide * 4 meters

Ottoman storage beds where you lift the mattress up are brilliant for storage - have you looked at those?

Leah2005 · 02/03/2022 17:24

Could you afford someone to build something bespoke for you?

Trixiefirecracker · 02/03/2022 19:10

@Toddlerteaplease won’t fit a double so has to be single!

@Justkeeppedaling been reading all sorts about how tricky it is building the IKEA day bed with drawers in a small space, so that one is out. There’s another with drawers but it needs a very slim mattress which we have on another bed but that’s super uncomfortable and only good for occasional use!

@DonGray I quite like the look of that! Thank you! Hope it’s not too babyish for him. He’s superficially put off by the duvet covers/surrounding decor! 😩 but will m admire up and give it a try.

How big is the room?

farnworth · 02/03/2022 19:17

Try googling beds for lofts. Can't remember company we used but needed lower beds than normal and I found a company by googling this.

Trixiefirecracker · 02/03/2022 19:22

Thank you for loft idea!

Room is probably just over 2 metres by 3 .5 (ish)

Ikea slakt bed would be good I think

Trixiefirecracker · 02/03/2022 19:25

@superstar84 IKEA beds are out for reasons above but thank you.

My DC had mid sleepers, with all toys/sports kit etc stored underneath, as well as Zedbeds for when friends slept over. One end of the bed was a bookcase and there was a slide in/slide out desk for them to do homework at. They ended up with those until they left for uni!

This sort of thing

gingerhills · 02/03/2022 19:27

Theirs also had a sliding side table/deep shelf on the edge of the bed, which was great for bedside lamp, drinks, phone, tissues etc. It was all very compact.

MaizeAmaze · 02/03/2022 19:31

DS (12) has a slightly smaller room than that - it is less than 2m across, and about 2.5 on the longer side. He has a mid sleeper with drawers and a bookcase under, and a pull out desk. The desk needs to be away for me to get into the wardrobe ( he just slides between the two).
It was partially build in our room, then the bits transfered across and assembled in place. If you have a room with space and a straight line between the doors, this might work for you too?

Mossstitch · 02/03/2022 19:45

😱 Bringing back terrible memories of trying to build an ikea bed with built in storage in a room less than 2m wide and only a few inches longer than the bed...... Not recommended unless your good at standing on your head whilst using an Allen key!!!
What about one of the metal beds that just slot into the headboard and footboard then storage underneath it of your choice. We used those big plastic tubs with lids but you can get some like drawers on little castors👍

Something like this with storage underneath?

pisspants · 02/03/2022 20:09

My kids both have small rooms and my dd has the IKEA Brimnes which you can get with 2 drawers underneath, then she has a very tall but narrow billy bookcase flush to the the end of the bed for her books and nick backs, so she has tonnes of storage. My ds has the nordli as his room is short and it's under a window and it has no headboard. It has large deep drawers underneath. He has a Billy bookcase elsewhere in his room too.
I quite like the look and they're sturdy beds

pisspants · 02/03/2022 20:10

I built the nordli in his room and it's only about 7ft x 8ft

Iggly · 02/03/2022 21:15

We’ve just got an Ikea single bed on legs with storage bags underneath. It’s 90cmx2m. It’s against the wall.

Then we have a small desk, a tall billy bookcase which fits loads and a wardrobe with draws integrated. It’s plenty, just not much floor space.

Trixiefirecracker · 02/03/2022 21:46

I don’t really want the Brimnes IKEA bed because of those thin mattresses they need, we already have a bed with these and find them super uncomfortable.
