Interested in people's views as it's sometimes difficult to discern in your own familiar surroundings.

@Tilltheend99, every man can hit the target.

Not every man can be bothered. This is because nobody makes them go back and clean up their piss if they spray it everywhere.

AmberLynn1536 · 21/01/2022 20:55

@PurchaseInvoices

The kind of stuff you find in shops like The Range - either diamante / bling / chrome / black /purple. Or old hat shabby chic / french country chic type stuff. People who bought "Louis" style furniture and Cath Kidston bed linen must be gutted now at how much they spent. Similarly chesterfield style sofas.

I think the 70s style stuff might be making a come back personally, look at the huge rise in popularity of mid-century style furniture.

Chesterfield sofas are a classic, they have been around forever.
whiteworldgettingwhiter · 21/01/2022 21:17

Oh, and people who buy a period house then strip out all the period features should be shot.

As should people who add mock period features to new builds. Why??? My pet hate is mullioned windows in new houses.

Terracotta

sleepyhoglet · 21/01/2022 21:41

@absii yes to cath lidston but no Emma Bridgewater! I still love it

PotatoPie888 · 21/01/2022 23:23

I have so much on these lists. Mahogany furniture, Chesterfield sofa, brass candlesticks. One woman’s dates is another woman’s classic.

mathanxiety · 22/01/2022 01:57

@PattyPan - I would definitely do my utmost to restore the Victorian features.

I think I've just seen the most ridiculous trend rearing it's ugly head, that will be over and dated before it's begun. Even worse than the mirrored furniture, rose gold and crushed velvet sofas.

I saw it on love it or list it the other night and now seen ads on TV selling the look...

Matt black bathroom taps and shower trays. They are going to look dreadful in hard water areas after about a month. Something about the look makes my skin crawl.

It's the equivalent of the avocado or chocolate brown bathroom suites of the 70's that looked awful by the early 80s.

billysboy · 22/01/2022 06:22

When I started as a builder 35 years ago one of my first jobs as part of a refurb was to paint some bedroom walls mint green with pink skirting which I thought was awful
Just in the middle of a modern barn conversion and have been asked for pink metro tiles , brushed gold taps with a green resin floor

On the subject of curtain length or not I think it misses the elephant in the room which is radiators

With Underfloor heating which has lots of ways of doing it but easier with overlay boards now it gets rid of the radiator so maybe it the radiator that is dated not the curtains?

User387598621 · 22/01/2022 06:32

Radiators are probably dated but so am I, I won't be changing them, they will probably outlast me, I don't expect to be still around when they become completely obsolete.

Tillyvonpantsalo · 22/01/2022 06:47

I always find these threads about things being dated a bit weird as I'm definitely turning into my mum.
Change it if it's dirty and can't be cleaned or broken, or a hazard but to change things because it's dated now seems so wasteful and not environmentallly friendly to me.

I am officially my mother. Make do and mend Grin

Any of those tacky "In this house we do..." stair painting projects
Kitchen tiles embossed with fruit
Souvenir ashtrays
Rasta figurines
Lilac anything
Woodchip paper
DVDs on display
Net curtains
Vertical blinds
New York canvas pictures
Glass doors with circular panels
Kettles and toasters with wheatsheaf patterns on them
Swarovski crystal animals on a £3 B&M glass tray
Fleur de lys carpets
Toilet seat lid covers
Brown plastic kitchen bins

thinking123 · 22/01/2022 07:28

Allot of things mentioned are just personal taste. To me a house looks tired and dated if things like curtains and cushions are very faded, if paintwork/gloss work looks chipped, wallpaper peeling, piles of clutter.

Sometimes it easy to miss these things in your own home as your are just too used to them

User387598621 · 22/01/2022 07:32

Curtains can get faded very quickly in the sun, we get the John Lewis ready made ones and change them about every five years, furniture that is not all matching is much easier to update and easier to buy in sales if you only need one piece.

FindingMeno · 22/01/2022 07:34

On the window dressing debate, I've realised that, for me, cluttered windowsills scream dated.
Definitely agree with pp's who mentioned dvds and bathroom products on display.
I need to add spice racks to the list.

Change the sofa and I think that room would be fine.
User387598621 · 22/01/2022 07:47

Our DVDs and CDs are on Billy bookcase DVD shelves in the spare room so out of the way but still available if we want them, I still watch the occasional DVD and only use CDs in the car.

Ah, you’ve been to my MIL’s house. Well, everything except the kitchen bin because she doesn’t have one, which is a worse crime than all the rest.
CorsicaDreaming · 22/01/2022 08:15

@MrsWooster

LOL 😂

I've just made a feature wall - on the chimney breast - with wallpaper.... ooops!

@kitcat15

Clutter....curtains or vertical blinds ( as opposed to Romans blinds or shutters) .....wall paper.....anything chrome, silver plated or glittery......patterned carpet ( or any carpet really in a living area) ..... too many patterns going on.....bare walls ..... wall lights.....anything mahogany..... shag pile rug.... chipped or stained wood furniture......China ornaments.....anything mirrored ( a mirror itself is ok but not a mirrored table etc)
I have a lot of this. I have curtains, carpet in living room, mahogany furniture, shag pile rug, china , silver stuff, etc. My house is fabulous.

This is so not true. Hmm

But this is:

My other pet hates are dolls, pastel towels, plain panel doors, woodchip walls and furniture covered in lace.

Lunificent · 22/01/2022 08:37

This scene: Black leather sofas with the cushions from your old sofa, apple green walls and a peeling border and dado border.

Snowiscold · 22/01/2022 08:54

Plantation shutters. They look wrong in virtually every style of property in the UK. People still seem to keep installing them, though. Solid wood shutters, on the other hand, can work in the right style of property - such as Victorian.
