What makes the interior of a home look tired and dated?

Interested in people's views as it's sometimes difficult to discern in your own familiar surroundings.

I've just had a navy kitchen installed so that's me fucked Grin
@Divebar2021 Toilet mats are horrible! Envy
Yes but toilet mats exist because not every man can hit the target.

Tilltheend99 · 20/01/2022 20:41

Also, fake wood floors are the worst.

MissFritton65 · 20/01/2022 20:42

@DJSteves me too especially as I've industrial looking light fittings too! 🤣🤣

ArabeI · 20/01/2022 20:47

Those shapeless, or conversely, box-like, dark brown leather sofas; seemingly ubiquitous looking at online estate agents in the last few months. They made a room look tired and dated, in my opinion.

@OwlBasket

Anything that’s is (or has) been actively fashionable will look dated within a few years. The general rule being more actively on trend it is the sooner it dates. Well until 30 or 40 years down the line when it’ll start look cool to younger generations again.
This.

I think that in a few years time, the current maximalist interiors will look as dated as grey interiors look today

stuntbubbles · 20/01/2022 20:48

Wallpaper is extremely not dated! Wallpaper all the things! Just no feature walls or worse, a feature chimney breast.

For full disclosure my house has Artex, dust, soggy towels, giant piles of laundry, junk on top of rickety IKEA wardrobes, and a host of other crimes. It is dated and tired.

ArabeI · 20/01/2022 20:49

Also grey, wallpaper borders, feature walls, and fake flowers. Also those enormous family photo prints on white backgrounds.

Signoramarella · 20/01/2022 20:50

Anaglypta wallpapering. My house has this. It is fucking horrible. 1965 I think its from....

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/01/2022 20:55

Tired, grubby furniture
Coloured or patterned carpets, which have seen better days
Washed out duvet covers
Marked, dirty walls
Yellowing woodwork
Damaged kitchens and bathrooms
Corroding taps
Sagging cupboard doors

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 20/01/2022 20:55

Beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that… Anaglypta’s been having a bit of a moment amongst trendy instagrammers and interiors magazines 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Scotabroad24 · 20/01/2022 21:02

Washing everywhere is dated? Thats me in trouble!
Chrome is dated? Definitely fucked now Grin
My walls are also a pale grey... I'd better stop talking!

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/01/2022 21:02

@Signoramarella

Do not despair. You have now reached the pinnacle of fashion.

What makes the interior of a home look tired and dated?
DJSteves · 20/01/2022 21:03

@MissFritton65 my industrial lights haven't even gone up yet. Grin

FindingMeno · 20/01/2022 21:04

This is all so interesting.
And, I particularly find it interesting that relatively recent trends look dated.
Another question to add. What makes a house look modern and fresh?

Can someone explain why an open plan kitchen/ dining/ living space is environmentally unfriendly? Can’t get my head round that one!

Innocenta · 20/01/2022 21:05

@Tilltheend99 you genuinely solved a mystery for me with that! I didn't know what they were for...

Cissyandflora · 20/01/2022 21:09

😀 we're back in fashion

We just paint over the anaglypta

Would worry about the plastering if we removed it

userxx · 20/01/2022 21:10

@Maireas

The question is what makes a home look dated - washing hanging around doesn't date a house, just makes it look messy

Was thinking exactly the same, whilst eyeing up the bloody airer!

Cuck00soup · 20/01/2022 21:11

Too much stuff. It’s the box of papers that need sorting and the bag with the craft project, and the pile of stuff to go to the charity shop when you get round to it.

My other pet hates are dolls, pastel towels, plain panel doors, woodchip walls and furniture covered in lace.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/01/2022 21:13

If something is expensive and high quality it won't date even if the cheaper copies will so, for example:

Real marble in a bathroom will never date. Fake 'marble' ceramic tiles will.
Original parquet flooring will never date. Fake LVT 'parquet' will date.
Hand printed wallpaper with the pattern designed for the specific room will never date. Cheap wallpaper is likely to date.

Beyond that I think an eclectic look with an individual mix of antiques, hand-me-downs, vintage and modern pieces is the least likely to date. Individual pieces may go in and out of fashion but the overall look still works. My PILs are architects, they have a gorgeous Victorian house loaded with original features that they've lived in for 50 years. Their furniture is from all periods and from all over the world, they have persian rugs over the pitch pine floorboards, the walls are full of modern art. It's fabulous.

DSGR · 20/01/2022 21:15

Lots of these lists are just people’s taste.. nothing to do with dated!

Clutter....curtains or vertical blinds ( as opposed to Romans blinds or shutters) .....wall paper.....anything chrome, silver plated or glittery......patterned carpet ( or any carpet really in a living area) ..... too many patterns going on.....bare walls ..... wall lights.....anything mahogany..... shag pile rug.... chipped or stained wood furniture......China ornaments.....anything mirrored ( a mirror itself is ok but not a mirrored table etc)

This list is bonkers. My house is about to be filmed for an interiors site. I have:
Curtains
Wallpaper
Carpet
Pattern
Wall lights
Chrome (on light fittings)
Mahogany
Shag pile rug (and in fact full on shag pile carpet)
An item of Mirrored furniture

In fact there’s not much on the list I don’t have!
