Period house - what is your tv on?

Our lounge is Edwardian in style with high ceilings, coving, and wooden floors. The furniture and decor is mainly in keeping with this except for my 90s style wooden tv unit which is spoiling the look!

Ideally I would like built in alcove shelving and cupboards either side of the chimney breast but they are ££ so need something else in the short term until I can shell out for those.

Wondered what those of you with older houses have. Has anyone seen anything that would fit the bill?

Mines on the side wall of the inglenook so gets pulled out to face the room when we want to watch then pushed back when we don’t, and when pushed back it’s effectively hidden from view/much less noticeable.

LittleBearPad · 02/01/2022 15:50

Alcove shelves in the sitting room sorry! But they were here when we bought.

In the family room a fairly normal oak sideboard - not a media unit.

I know exactly what you mean. My PIL had exactly this and Solved by a glass corner tv unit that is invisible really and has a tube at the back for the wires. Sounds odd but works brilliantly.

I bought an old 2 drawer dressing table (probably 1940s or thereabouts) from a second hand shop and it sits on that. It's the perfect height. My house is only 1930s though.

dontcallmelen · 02/01/2022 15:55

Mine is on fairly old small sideboard, which I decoupaged in a pattern wallpaper as the the walls/curtains/sofa are plain.

HamCob · 02/01/2022 20:38

Some good ideas, thanks! Maybe I should steer away from a traditional tv unit then. Off to hunt for some ideas on Insta 🙂

Mine is on an alcove unit too. Had ours built when we first bought the house.

Thoosa · 02/01/2022 20:43

A big antique blanket box. Associated wires and clutter tucked behind.

BabyBornThisWay · 02/01/2022 20:47

I have few pieces of Ercol furniture (all s second hand) and the tv sits on an Ercol sideboard

Hebeee · 03/01/2022 00:45

Our house is a 400 year old converted mill (converted over 100 years ago, but tbh most of the character features are those we've had to put in ourselves 🙄) and we have a fairly eclectic mix of stuff/decorating styles.

The TV in the main living room is on a mid century sideboard but as we also collect arts and crafts movement pieces, we chose one that almost has a vibe of that period (so it has A-frame legs which is rather unusual!).

In the other room (a more recent addition), the smaller TV is on an oriental style painted console table.

Hebeee · 03/01/2022 00:48

Meant to say that in the larger room, the sideboard plus TV is in a recess, so not immediately visible when entering the room. Although the TV is quite big we didn't want it to dominate the space which has other features, such as wall panelling and an antique curved sofa 😉

Shmithecat2 · 03/01/2022 00:54

Mine is on a console table in the one of the recesses next to the fire place - not dissimilar to the pic. I hate TV stands.

We have a grade II listed cottage with lots of beams. In the snug I have relented and allowed DH to put the tv on the wall above the fireplace. It makes sense as otherwise we couldn't get enough seating in and now it's up Im tolerating it. In the main sitting room the tv is on a long scaffold board unit under a window (tv at one end so as not to block the window). The furniture is arranged around the fireplace with the tv on one side of the room so that although you can see the tv you don't notice it as much when you walk into the room and the focus is on the fireplace.

I would go for a chunky wooden unit of some kind or a blanket box or sideboard if possible, rather than a tv unit. Can't stand tv units personally so we always just pop the tv on a piece of furniture instead.

I have nine in a 1920s glass-doors bookcase with some of the shelves removed. Made chintz floral curtains for inside the doors. It looks cute. Not a huge tv though.

About10thusername · 03/01/2022 01:47

Ours is on an old blanket box that we keep camping stuff in (we only get out once a year)

ABitOfAShitShow · 03/01/2022 01:56

Haven’t made this happen yet (new tv currently on the floor and it probably will be for a while) but I plan on getting an easel for mine. I have a Frame though and I’m going to buy an extravagant frame from Deco TVs so it’s a more obvious art tie-in.

cloudtree · 03/01/2022 05:07

I have a Samsung The Frame tv which looks like a picture on the wall.

NotMyFIrstTIme · 04/01/2022 14:32

Our house was built in 1900 and we have a fairly eclectic mix of furniture. We already had a large, rectangular coffee table/storage box (think JL Maharani range) when we moved in and bought this for the TV
TV Bench/Stand
It's solid & very well made, and much nicer than a very similar one, at the same price point, that The Range sells.

JaninaDuszejko · 05/01/2022 19:12

It's now on a Vitsœ unit in the alcove, but for years we've had it on a battered old trunk of DHs. I have a pathological hatred of TV units.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 05/01/2022 19:18

Ours is on the wall. But it's just above an armchair, and is a black TV on a dark blueish grey wall so blends in and doesn't look as though the room is arranged around it

trickyex · 05/01/2022 19:38

Am going to order an OLED LG TV which will go on the wall, it will be on the same wall as the door so you dont see it as you walk into the room.
Quite discreet.

beggingforsleep · 06/01/2022 07:32

How much money do you have? These are cheaper than a bespoke joiner option diyalcovecabinets.co.uk/

Rrrob · 06/01/2022 07:38

Alcove unit too. Could you do an ikea hack to get units/ shelves that look built in? We’ve done this with a wardrobe upstairs and it cost 1/3 of the price of the built in wardrobes we have in another room.

CaravanConcerns · 06/01/2022 07:53

Sideboard in a recessed part of the room here too. It's dark wood (we have a lot of dark wood) so picked up pretty cheaply from ebay or Facebook marketplace I think.

Giggorata · 06/01/2022 09:12

I've just decided that my big one is going up on a wall (not above the fireplace) with a pull out and swivel device.
At the moment, it's on a coffee table, one of those ones with drawers, but it is too imposing.

The other smaller one is also on a multi drawer coffee table in another room, which is going to stay as it is.
