Hello

After being stranded for days with no heat and electricity we are fitting a log burner as back up heat

We have two positions and we can't decide

We have a open plan kitchen/conservatory

First is where TV in conservatory and second is were Tree is at top end of kitchen / dining part

See photos

Which would you choose

You probably need to get a fitter round to look at where the flue would go- one place might be much easier logistically than the other!

incognitodorrito · 04/12/2021 20:36

I’ve just had one fitted at the end of my extension as fitter recommended, it needs to be a certain distance away from main house for the chimney part. I think yours would look great centrally positioned at back of conservatory

SilverGlassHare · 04/12/2021 20:37

Provided it’s as easy to put the flue in both places, I’d go for the corner where the plant is. I’d worry I’d lose half the gear through the windows of it was where the tv is, even if they’re double/glazed.

Honeyroar · 04/12/2021 20:37

Neither would be that good. Where the tv is - where would the flue go? Wouldn’t it just look a bit “dumped there”? And at the other end be of the room it’s a bit “out of the way”. For me, a log burner needs to be a feature of the room, something you can sit round in winter. I’d want to change the furniture around somehow so it and the tv could be on the back wall near where the dining table is.

squirrelnutkins1 · 04/12/2021 20:38

Neither. Any other options?

2reefsin30knots · 04/12/2021 20:39

I reckon they'll be illegal shortly. Easy win on the climate change agenda.

KG1000 · 04/12/2021 20:40

I would choose the tv position because it is near the sofas....cosy!

Although, it would depend on the practicalities of fitting the flue. When we had ours fitted, positioning it by the inside wall was going to be significantly more expensive.

Can't see anyone living in a rural area letting that happens after the fiasco of the last week.
Woeismethischristmas · 04/12/2021 20:50

I’d get the fitter round to consider options. You can run a couple of radiators off a wood stove if you have a back boiler that would give you more even heat distribution or heat water. I have an open plan living / dining / kitchen also open to upstairs and it needs a 12kw stove but can keep the place toasty without anything else. Personally I’d choose the spot where the plant is you can get some nice corner stoves.

Indoctro · 04/12/2021 20:50

Yes sofa can also sit across the room as that where it used to be

So sofa would go across the room the yellow box and tv on other corner purple box

Or log burner could be purple box side and tv stays where it is

All the positions are fine the installation company has said and there isn't much difference in price

The reason I'm fitting it is for back up heat after being left for days with no power

We have oil heating and underfloor electric but when power went off within 12 hours the house was so cold I had to leave with the kids, I'm not being left in that situation again so that's while it's being installed.

@bigbluebus this is why we are fitting one we are rural NE Scotland and I'm not allowing my family to be stuck in the cold like that again with no source of heat.

We have been told we only need 5Kw stove and have already had quotes etc it is now just down to our preference on location, all are doable and within our budget
My husband feel the stove should be something we are looking it, one corner is the tv and other corner stove and the window in Middle has a lovely view across countryside so he feels it give it a nice feel about it

I think back corner by plant is more practical as would push heat into whole area kitchen and sitting area

Illegal in urban areas perhaps. Can’t see it happening rurally.

Are you getting on that has the flue at the back or the top?
Top tip for power cuts: you can fit a pan or stove top kettle on the top to boil water/heat soup etc. There would be more room on the top if it has a back flue. (Also had a power cut for 68 hours and no way to cook)

We are ok for cooking as have a gas cooker fed off bottles in our garden

It's just heat that we fell short on and in the mist of winter it was cold.

The more Interior wall, and more in centre of room and more centre of the house -- so your thinking not your husband's. You'll be relying on people moving around to get air flow up, need it a more central position.

I've heard several north Scotland people on radio lately saying they have same plan as you!! I've been so grateful for my burner when we lost power in past.

Indoctro · 04/12/2021 21:20

@ragged yes in the last week alone the installation date has gone back to April from March as there has been a huge flurry of people in my area requesting them.

You need to some kind of self sufficient way to cook and heat yourself as if the power goes no one is coming to help you

This week has proved that.

Woeismethischristmas · 04/12/2021 21:29

Those little fans you get for the top of wood stoves are surprisingly effective at circulating heat round a room

mineofuselessinformation · 04/12/2021 21:34

I agree with @ragged. In my last house I had an open fire with a chimney that went up through the middle of the house. On the more than once odd occasion where we ran out of oil, the chimney helped to keep the rest of the house warm.

Witchonastick · 04/12/2021 21:40

So glad we had ours after no power for nearly a week!
We only have a small one, but it easily heats the whole of downstairs.
If you get one with a hot plate you’ll be able to boil a kettle, heat a saucepan etc. Makes such a difference to your misery level in an extended power cut!

Witchonastick · 04/12/2021 21:41

And saves the leccy bills in normal times Wink

squirrelnutkins1 · 04/12/2021 21:48

I think it would be better to have a more central location in the room. Ours is only a small room and it's amazing, I don't even have the radiator on in the living room, the log burner heats it up way quicker!
I'd def get a fan for on top to spread the heat round the room.

These locations would be better I think x
