Would you rather have a small bedroom with walk in wardrobe or a large bedroom?

I currently have a large room with lots of floor space. It's an odd shaped room, so I'm thinking of putting a dividing wall to create a walk in wardrobe. This would leave a smaller room for the actual bed.

Would appreciate thoughts.

Personally if it didn't affect the size of the bed I could have (King) and it's just dead otherwise space i'd put the walk in wardrobe in.. It depends if you spend alot of time in there though

KateLumley · 11/08/2021 12:52

There would still be space for the king bed. I am usually sleeping or watching tv in bed. The wardrobe would have space for exercising.

It sounded good to me till you mentioned space for exercising.

Would it not feel a bit claustrophobic and cluttered?

DaisyWaldron · 11/08/2021 13:01

Walk in wardrobe. I sleep better in a cosy space, so as long as there would be good natural light, enough room to walk around three sides of the bed comfortably and decent bedside table/storage space, having a smaller, less cluttered bedroom would be nice.

Walk in wardrobe, definitely. I'm messy so being able to have a "hide it" space would be perfect for me!

Rainbowshit · 11/08/2021 13:07

We've just built an extension and the builders were horrified that we wanted to make the bedroom smaller by taking some of it for a walk in wardrobe.

Honestly it's amazing and I'm so glad we did it. We do have plenty of space round the bed too though.

Walk in wardrobe, 100%. DSis had one which I'm very jealous of, she has her dressing table in there as well. Much more efficient use of space and keeps the clutter in the actual sleeping space to a minimum.

Larger bedroom.
Too many wardrobes in all the houses weve seen with walk in wardrobes. We'd never fill them with clothes/stuff so a more flexible floor spare would be preferred.

Larger bedroom.

Walk in wardrobe.

No way I could do yoga in a wardrobe. The clutter would distract me. I’d want a space in the bed part for my yoga mat even if that means the wardrobes are not “walk in”.
KateLumley · 11/08/2021 13:29

I'm thinking a mirrored wall with hanging / shelves either side to make the space feel bigger. The wardrobe will be in the space that I already use to exercise, so not much difference there

I'd have the walk in wardrobe. The reason people usually need a large bedroom is to store clothes, so if you could get all that clutter stored elsewhere, you could have a nice serene bedroom

Dollywilde · 11/08/2021 13:40

Yes to the walk in wardrobe as long as it doesn’t impact on the light. My best friend has a half open room off her bedroom which she uses as a walk in wardrobe, and I’m madly jealous because her actual sleeping space is just bed, bedside tables, some art and a large window. All the crap lives in the walk in wardrobe space and her bed space - despite being smaller than my bedroom - feels much bigger due to lack of furniture.

KateLumley · 11/08/2021 14:19

The room is double aspect, so there will be a window in the wardrobe.

OP posts:
RubyGoat · 11/08/2021 14:23

So it will effectively be a separate room?

KateLumley · 11/08/2021 14:54

I guess so, although it will only be accessible through the bedroom.

I would 100% have the walk in wardrobe, all the little bits of crap could live in there, it would be awesome! Your bedroom would always be tidy and calm, I’d love it. You would also be able to get dressed more easily and wouldn’t forget clothes you own, everything organised and accessible.

Primrosefields · 11/08/2021 16:35

Our bedroom is L shaped so we have made the first part our dressing area with wardrobes, drawers, shoeracks and rails. We put up a rail with voile curtains to section the areas off from each other's then you turn the corner and we have our bed and bedside tables. There are windows in both sections.
I love that the side where our bed is free from clothes and the other side has all our clothing, shoes and accessories organised.

Our previous house had a large square bedroom and I prefer the new layout in this house.

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/08/2021 16:37

It would depend on the plan of the room.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 11/08/2021 16:37

Walk in wardrobe. A small bedroom that is uncluttered looks bigger than a large one full of stuff.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 11/08/2021 19:03

I much prefer the larger bedroom.

My friend just created a "master suite" with a small bedroom, then lovely sized ensuite blending into a good size walk in wardrobe.

In her case, the layout of the bedroom part is squished. There's only room for a king bed and 2 tiny side tables. It feels cramped

BoxHedge · 11/08/2021 23:24

It depends on the floor plan. There are some beautiful dressing rooms on Pinterest. Or it can work well in a sort of corridor space with clothes on both sides.

nocoolnamesleft · 11/08/2021 23:26

I'd love a walk in wardrobe.

Divebar2021 · 11/08/2021 23:34

We have a dressing room off the main bedroom and I love it. I still have a super king size bed and plenty of room to get around it. When I see photos of huge bedrooms with acres of floor space I wonder what the point is. Having big reception rooms for entertaining makes sense but unless you’re planning an orgy I don’t get the point of large bedrooms.
