Too plain or just right?

This is our newly finished guest room... too plain or does it need a little more too it? I don’t really want to paint or wall paper if I’m being honest!!

Too plain or just right?

It's a big room and I think the lamps and accessories are just too small.

BrieAndChilli · 11/05/2021 17:01

I think move that feather thing over with the other bits and then get a large piece of art for above the bed.

OppsUpsSide · 11/05/2021 17:02

I think something on the walls, pictures, mirror would do it.

BrieAndChilli · 11/05/2021 17:02

Maybe one of those padded storage benches at the end of the bed?

MysteriousMonkey · 11/05/2021 17:03

I agree with Brieandchili... Or even just move the feather thing over and don't get anything else. It looks too small there all by itself

Poppins2016 · 11/05/2021 17:04

I agree with the pp, the furniture looks a bit lost in that large room!

I'd consider a large painting above the bed as the wall hangings are also a bit small for the space...

Could you add a rug at the end or either side of the bed?

Annonymiss123 · 11/05/2021 17:05

@BrieAndChilli

I think move that feather thing over with the other bits and then get a large piece of art for above the bed.
This is exactly what I was thinking (except I'd completely get rid of the feathering things).
Justa47 · 11/05/2021 17:07

@AJB120

I would get throw and cushions for bed.
Nice big picture or mirror and a floor lamp.

Plexie · 11/05/2021 17:07

I think the decor is fine - it's just a guest room.

On a practical note:

  1. Don't put anything heavy on the wall above the bed - some people (eg me!) worry that it will fall on them. There was a thread on this recently, albeit about a glass-fronted picture falling into a child's cot.
  1. Bedside tables: the lamps are small and no good as reading lights. Also lose the clutter (plants?) as guests are more likely to want the surface space for glasses or phone.
UCOinanOCG · 11/05/2021 17:17

If I was staying with you I would be looking for the mirror to dry my hair and do my makeup. You can get cheap ones at Ikea which you can lean up against the wall.

AJB120 · 11/05/2021 17:19

Thank you all so much for your great tips 😁 I’ll have a look online tonight for some new bits!

I'd be very happy with that if I was your guest as it's a lovely spacious room and looks nice and light.

JaninaDuszejko · 11/05/2021 17:39

I think a guest room is best if the surfaces are as clear as possible for the guest to put their things. Do you have somewhere to store their clothes and a mirror? A bed blanket is a good idea, different people like different temperatures for sleeping.

Willdoitlater · 11/05/2021 17:39

It's lovely. Very calm and elegant. The hanging items are not to my taste, I'd have a bare wall (after all, you can't see them when you're in the bed), but they're not awful, and I guess you like them, so keep them.

Saz12 · 11/05/2021 18:34

It’s nice!

I’d mo e the bedside tables a touch further away from the bed.
If you can, get a bigger chair - it’s a spacious room so the smaller chair looks a bit lost. Or else have a dressing table.

BrieAndChilli · 11/05/2021 18:39

Don’t have plants on bedside tables - last thing you want when fumbling around in the night for your phone/glasses/water is to knock a plant and end up with earth sprayed everywhere!
I agree although we can’t see other side of room is mirror and somewhere to put clothes/toiletries etc.

MayflowerMaisie · 11/05/2021 18:43

Very pretty!
Where is your duvet cover from... it would be a great match for our room?

AJB120 · 11/05/2021 18:56

There are built in wardrobes on the other side of the room with a full length mirror on the doors, will absolutely move the plants from bedside table too! Thanks again for your advice everyone 😁 the bed sheets are only from Asda

I saw a tv design programme recently , and they just used one roll to do 3 drops of wallpaper behind the bed , that’s all. No more and it was very effective. You’ve a high ceiling so might need more rolls

UCOinanOCG · 11/05/2021 19:28

Seems like the perfect guest room.

Twinkie01 · 11/05/2021 19:31

I'd paint the wall behind the bed so you can see the accessories and put some nice pictures up maybe on a picture shelf. Sorry, it does all seem a bit drab.

7to25 · 12/05/2021 17:22

A small suggestion but the bedside tables could be eased away from the bed slightly- you've got loads of room.

Virgo19 · 16/05/2021 22:52

I really liked your wall colour . M having grey carpet too in my bedrooms .what colour is it ?

AlmostSummer21 · 16/05/2021 23:01

I'm another vote for nothing above the bed!

It's a perfectly fine guest bedroom.

It would look fab with a navy wall behind the bed😂

Family/friends or paid guests?

Tightwad2020 · 19/05/2021 12:24

I don't know how easy this is to do, but I've been looking enviously at those big, padded hotel-style headboards a lot recently. Seems like a good way to add colour, comfort and pizazz to a bedroom all at once. That, combined with the previous suggestion of something at the foot of the bed? I would dial up the colour on the bed with different duvet cover, throws and cushions/pillows - with the grey walls, grey carpet and white woodwork, it's all very muted. But I'm in the middle of adding colour to my house, so that's where my decorating head is at right now. All very subjective!
