Grey paint disaster

I’m having an absolute nightmare trying to choose a grey paint for my bedroom. I’ve tried about 20 different samples now and nothing is right, it’s either too dark or too light or too purple or too blue, my room is north facing too which doesn’t help.
I have decided that I want a colour that is lighter than dulux chic shadow but darker than dulux polished pebble, can anyone help? Even if it’s not by dulux, I’m open to suggestions! I have tried goose down but it’s too blue/cool and it seems a bit depressing in a dark room. Grateful for anyone’s help!

I have used Cloud Burst by Crown paint which sounds like it could the kind of shade you are looking for? It's a light warm grey,.

I had this sort of drama looking for the perfect pinky coral for DD's nursery. In the end I used the smorgasbord of testers to mix the colour I had in my head and then got it colour matched at Valspar. It sounds like you have enough samples you could do the same thing.

Dulux Goose Down we've got, I'd say it's in the middle. We've also got polished pebble in another room and polished pebble is lighter.

Have you tried pebble shore? I accidentally bought it instead of polished pebble. I couldn't face returning it. It turned out to be the perfect, soft true grey for a small dark room. I'm so glad I got it now that I've seen reviews saying my original choice looked like a cold blue in dark rooms.

LG Rolling Fog. Have used it in four rooms, all aspects, all sizes. A fabulous warm grey that suits any light and decor.

I had the same problem. In the end, I used dulux grey steel 4 and grey steel 3 depending on the room ( the kind you get mixed up). They both give the same colour, but it depended on the natural light of the room as to which one I used. Gives a proper pale grey - no blue, purple or brown tinges

Dulux Egyptian cotton is a lovely pale grey in darker rooms.

MeanderingGently · 06/04/2021 22:32

I've used Goose Down, it does have a pale bluish hue and can look blue rather than grey in certain lights....

wheresmymojo · 06/04/2021 22:38

I was also going to suggest that you use the testers you have plus some white to mix the exact shade you'd like and then get it colour matched

Try dulux just walnut, looks a bit brown in the wrong light but it was perfect grey in my north facing room where all other greys looked purple

MrsBungle · 06/04/2021 22:41

We have goose down in dd’s room and it’s nice but I do think greys look different depending on the room and the light. Our house is a 60s monstrosity but every room had massive windows which means lots of natural light,

Morechocmorechoc · 06/04/2021 22:45

We have cloud burst for south facing, its too dark for north. Agree with pp, pebble shore. Our old house had polished pebble and pebble shore in sitting room and it was lovely.

JackieWeaverFever · 06/04/2021 22:50

Try dulux rum caramel 4 or 5 depending on darkness
It looks brown online but comes out a really nice grey. I used it in a NNW facing room
No less than 5 people I know bought it based on seeing it in my old flat (including, somewhat creepily, two of my neighbours)

MrsBDarcy · 06/04/2021 22:54

F and B pavilion grey is a definite grey

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 06/04/2021 23:13

Pebble shore is a nice warm grey if not very dark. Have it in a north facing bedroom and it's not a chilly grey. Have polished pebble in the hallway outside it and it's a much bluer grey

shash1982 · 06/04/2021 23:29

We painted a north facing room in grey steel by dulux. You get it mixed at a dulux decorating shop.

buckeejit · 06/04/2021 23:40

Dulux night jewels 5 or F&B Cornforth white or pavilion

Saz12 · 07/04/2021 09:46

Pebble Shore is a nice one. Looks good with dark greens.

I risk being shot down here, but why grey for a north-facing room? Wouldn't a warmer colour be better? I'd go for a pink or yellow.

Also, in case it's not already part of your trials, paint onto a sheet of paper and pin it up, so that you don't get patches that are hard to paint over.

We found goosedown a bit too blue. Dulux engraved locket is nice colour. In between chic shadow and polished pebble

Toomuchleopard · 08/04/2021 20:18

Valspar Smooth Pebbles is a very warm grey

Bobbots · 08/04/2021 20:21

Have you looked at the B&Q own brand range? We did DDs room in a grey from there, I will google which one. Sounds like it might work for you.

AcornAutumn · 08/04/2021 20:22

Maybe no grey is right because grey isn't right for that room.
