Gorgeous white plates

I need new plates but everything I can find are massive!! I'd like them to fit comfortably in our dishwasher so approx 25cm diameter whereas everything I've looked at is 27+

Tried Denby, John Lewis, Portmeiron - am interested in something which could be pretty long term rather than a cheap set I'll never be able to get replacements for (which is what I've got now)

Any manufacturers / other good retailers I could try?

We got square ones from IKEA as we also needed smaller ones to fit in the dishwasher

FusionChefGeoff · 23/03/2021 21:48

Thanks - I'm after round ones really. Why don't they make a) dishwashers that fit the mega plates or b) smaller plates!!

Or have we got greedier and plates used to be smaller?!

I'm also hoping to get smaller ones to below with portion size.

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/flitighet-18-piece-service-white-50333921/ is 26cm too big?

FusionChefGeoff · 23/03/2021 21:56

It's the smallest so far! But again for portion control I'd like to have a rim as I'm less inclined to pile it right to the edges then Grin

This would be ideal but they're out of stock plus I'm nervous of random stockists as it would
Be so hard to replace breakages.

We recently replaced our supermarket set with Denby Intro. The dinner plates are apparently 26.5 cm. Is that too big? They do fit in our dishwasher and do have a rim.

dementedpixie · 23/03/2021 22:02

Says 25cm dinner plate

Defiantly41 · 23/03/2021 22:07

M&S Maxim (not Maxim Coupe). 26.9 cm but fits in dishwasher easily. Have had them for year, very sturdy, easy to buy spares.

John Lewis "House" range fit comfortably into a normal sized dishwasher. I gave alway all conran plates as they did not . May not be as smart as you want but have a rim and fit into dishwasher. Also - seem to have the longevity to get replacements. They are decent quality & nice . I would be a bit surprised if you have tried John Lewis and these don't fit. But - good luck @FusionChefGeoff - let me know if you can find decent white deep pasta bowls Grin

dementedpixie · 23/03/2021 22:09

That would be too big for my dishwasher as it has a cutlery tray at the top so there is less room in the bottom rack due to where the top rack had to sit

Kiki275 · 23/03/2021 22:11

Royal Worcester Serendipity are a nice size. I got mine from Boundary Mill and add pieces when I can afford it x

FusionChefGeoff · 23/03/2021 22:26

This is bonkers but I'm seriously thinking about getting a new dishwasher as well now!!! Our current plates are 27cm and they are too big. They fit but the Spinney water bit gets stuck on them so the top shelf never gets properly cleaned.

We've got a couple of really cheap and nasty IKEA ones left from about 15 yrs ago but they are 25cm with a big rim and I much prefer them so that's what I'm trying to recreate really - but in a more grown up fashion!

However, I may end up finding a random set and buying way too many then keeping the spares in the garage!

Plates are good on that one from Dunlem but don't like the bowls. Oh God this is going to go on forever!!

I've found a possibility on a very odd site and have ordered a sample of plate, side plate and bowl (buyer pays for returns so not risking a whole set it would cost a bomb!)

They are very cheap compared to what I was looking at so could just buy 12 settings and keep spares.

These any good?

I have vintage plates and bowls and they are much smaller - also helps with portion control. Also have larger plates which didn't fit in the dishwasher until I realised I could move the top shelf up a notch.

BasiliskStare · 23/03/2021 22:46

Gosh @FusionChefGeoff Have just measured John Lewis House plates and they are 28 cm but fit nicely in bottom drawer of dishwasher - I do realise I am becoming too invested in this problem,. Conran plates were more 30 cm plus & lovely but had to be put in on an angle & it just wasn't worth it day to day,

I don't think my dishwasher is unusual so not to be able to get a 27cm or 28 cm plate in sounds unusual.

All the best to you Flowers

Tinkletwat · 23/03/2021 22:51

Was also going to suggest Villeroy & Boch, you can often pick up discounts and should be easy to source replacements if you break any. Ours still are in good condition after about 8 years.

SwedishEdith · 23/03/2021 22:54

Sainsbury's own fit. Our massive M&S ones which chipped really badly as well were too big.

blitzen · 23/03/2021 22:55

I had this problem until dh discovered you can raise the top shelf in a dishwasher to fit bigger dinner plates. Think he saw it on YouTube!

dementedpixie · 23/03/2021 23:00

Yeah, but if I raise the top basket I can't fit my glasses in. I'd rather just use smaller plates tbh

dementedpixie · 23/03/2021 23:01

P.s. my issues are partly caused by having a cutlery tray at the very top.

TheCraicDealer · 23/03/2021 23:03

Yes, have you tried adjusting the height of the top rack?

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 23/03/2021 23:10

A friend of mine bought a set of Eternal Beau style crockery recently and rang me up to say it's no wonder we were thinner then as the plates are so much smaller! I think they have expanded a lot in recent years.
I bought catering crockery as I kept breaking and chipping normal ones on granite worktop and tiled floor. Some of the plates are huge but you often have a wider range of sizes to pick from, I have small side plates, large side/salad plates (which I often use for lunches and snacky meals), large plates (quite honestly they are too big for everyday use) and pasta bowls which we use more than the plates. Have a look at the Churchill super vitrified stuff

WithIcePlease · 23/03/2021 23:10

I'm thinking of doing what someone on MN suggested - getting rid of cutlery tray and buying a basket from Amazon
DH likes the cutlery tray but I'm not bothered tbh. He's the only one in the house with the patience to do the angling of plates for the spinneys to turn
Wine glasses on top layer non- negotiable here
