What do you do with your chipped crockery?

I'd really like to replace all our crockery and mugs etc as they're all chipped and are cheap Ikea ones but I feel guilty throwing them away in the dump as they are still usable. What have you done with yours? Is there anywhere they would be considered useful?

It's dangerous to drink or eat from chipped crockery. A chipped cup might collapse in your hand and a chipped plate in unhygienic.

Is that better?

Why not grow some little plants in the cups?

Could you possibly break them down and use them as a type of crock/gravel for outdoor pot plants? So you'd put this at the bottom of the pot, then soil, then your plant.

Mosaic123 · 16/03/2021 22:31

Good idea.

Downthefarm · 16/03/2021 22:43

Chipped crockery is unhygienic because bacteria get trapped. That's what I was taught, anyway.

HollowTalk · 16/03/2021 22:46

Does chipped crockery go in the recycling bin, does anyone know?

General waste I think, that's where mine goes anyway.

Or at the tip, it goes into rubble! As I discovered today when I had to tip loads of rubble and found a perfect and undamaged Denby milk jug which matches a set I gave to my daughter and a lovely little Le Creuset espresso cup! 😊

I'm convinced that there's no issue and I'm pretty paranoid about this stuff

I can't imagine my grandparents fretting over this stuff

Interesting discussion here

I understand that in the case of a mug if you put your mouth on the chip, but with plates and bowls the food does not touch the chip if it's on the edge.

I don't use cracked crockery as it could break but chipped is fine here. If it's not fit for charity, but not fit for rubbish either then I wouldn't replace it.

CausingChaos2 · 16/03/2021 23:24

I break them up and use in the garden for improving drainage 🪴

TaraR2020 · 16/03/2021 23:26

Crocks for planting!

DuesToTheDirt · 16/03/2021 23:38

I used to replace them, but with the environment in mind (and the expense of replacing) I now just keep using them, unless they are say mugs with a crack right down. Most of the chips are on say the rims of plates, so not dangerous in any way.

NoSquirrels · 16/03/2021 23:56
  1. Ignore for as long as possible whilst wishing you felt less guilty about wanting to replace.
  1. Remind yourself Marie Kondo says it’s fine to let go of imperfect stiff, just say thank you.
  1. Repeat steps above as many times as necessary, irritating yourself in the process.
  1. Sentimental stuff - favourite mugs etc - relegate to pen pots (further relegating the previous sentimental mug to water mugs for painting crafts or something similar)
  1. Unloved/not special stuff smash them gleefully in the garden and use at the bottom of plant pots. Wonder why you didn’t do it aaaages ago.

My mum kept chipped things in a box in the garage, when she was really pissed off she’d go in to the garage and smash the shit out of it with a hammer Grin.

ItsDinah · 17/03/2021 01:20

Really useful if broken up for providing drainage at bottom of plant pots. Plates to stand plant pots on. Use for standing things on in fridge and cupboards. Helps to keep shelves clean. Cups for laundry and bird food scoops.Grow mustard and cress on plates. Most fun is smashing them all and using for mosaic.

HappyAsASandboy · 17/03/2021 01:54

If it's chipped or broken then it goes to the tip and into the rubble section.

Proudboomer · 17/03/2021 01:57

Plates I break up to use in garden pots. I put the bits around the plants to keep down the weeds and make my pots look pretty.
Cups
1 use to plant succulents in
2 hang from trees with old cooking fat and bird seed in
3 pop in the flower beds and use as beer traps for slugs
