Master bedroom-What should I do?

I’m keen to improve my bedroom without spending a fortune. What would you change/rearrange to make the bedroom nicer.

At the moment as soon as you walk into the room the mirrored wardrobe is on the far wall, there is a gap, the bed and a nightstand. The other wall is the window and a radiator. Opposite the bed is the dresser, then the bedroom door and a dressing table. The final door leads to the en-suite (pics attached).

Should I move the bed to in front of the window, ignoring the radiator? Do I need to get rid of the dresser or change my bed frame?

The thing that stands out to me is the fact that the wallpaper is on a fairly stark white background whereas the rest of the room is quite warm. I'd be tempted to lose the wallpaper and maybe spray the bed frame an off-white along the lines of the dressing table.

Honeywort · 17/02/2021 09:09

I’d definitely agree about the wallpaper - it’s quite different to the feel of the rest of the room. Good idea about respraying the bed frame, though actually if the wallpaper was changed, the bed frame might “go” with the room better anyway.

It’s hard fitting furniture in - if you were to remove a piece, would the dressing table be the one to go ( I need a dresser/chest of drawers for clothes storage but use the en-suite for dressing table like tasks). Finally, and this is a personal opinion, I don’t like the teddies ontop of the wardrobe - to me they look cluttered and don’t look like you are displaying them there on purpose. Feel free to disagree with that one - it’s your bedroom after all!

Honeywort · 17/02/2021 09:11

Meant to say, I love the wooden doors and skirting - beautiful and warm looking

VelveteenChair · 17/02/2021 09:13

This is a very hard room because of the doors. You need to move the bed to the opposite wall so that your feet don’t point towards the door. Bad feng sui!

randomstuff · 17/02/2021 09:32

Thanks everyone. I agree with the wallpaper comments, it was the only thing we didn’t change when we moved in! What colour should I change it to?

I like the idea of spraying the bed, but think maybe the bed frame is overpowering the room anyway...?

If I lose the dresser I would need somewhere to put the tv.

I teddies have accumulated over time. Ideally I would like to make use of the space above the wardrobes for storage, as it seems a waste. Maybe I need nice storage solutions that look easy on the eye.

I thought beds were supposed to face the door?

Thanks @Honeywort to be honest it kinda grates me that they are 2 different shades.

Quick fix - paint the walls and over that wallpaper, buy a new lamp for the bedside table.

Other options - get rid of the dressing table and put the chest of drawers in its place to create more space. You could swap the bed to the opposite wall although I probably wouldn't. Replace the short curtains with floor length curtains - I think that makes a room look larger & the ceiling height feel higher. If you moved the drawers you wouldn't have anywhere for the TV so either remove it or buy a wall bracket for it.

(Obviously you could strip off the wallpaper & do it properly / replace with new wallpaper!)

CallmeNessa · 17/02/2021 09:41

Sorry x-post!

For those teddies you could buy one of those storage boxes that look a little bit like an old fashioned trunk with the metal fixings - found a photo but no idea how to post it as using my phone.

randomstuff · 17/02/2021 09:44

@CallmeNessa Thanks. I clearly need to get rid of the wallpaper and maybe invest in a wall bracket for the TV. I do like the look of floor-length curtains, I have always been hesitant though, as I thought we would lose the heat from the radiator as it would cover it, am I wrong?

OP posts:
randomstuff · 17/02/2021 09:46

@CallmeNessa I'm not really sure why the teddies are there, I guess it was just somewhere to put them. They have kind of accumulated over the years. I'm thinking they need to move into the loft.

I'd take the wallpaper down then either have the wall skimmed or fill and sand any imperfections before painting depending on its conditions and your budget.

A colour like Egyptian cotton would go nicely with your woodwork and is quite warm. A wooden bed frame, in oak or teak would suit the room better. The one in there currently doesn't really work with the decor.

Putting the teddies out of sight is an excellent idea, they are just gathering dust atm. The wardrobe doesn't really fit in either but it would be a bigger expense to replace it.

I think I would move the bed to the left a foot or two further away from the window and move the wardrobe to where the dresser is currently so that it's not the first thing you see. Then a bedside table on each side and a large potted plant where the current dressing table is.

I'd either have long curtains or Roman blinds. If you go for curtains then unless you have your heating on overnight you won't lose heat. If you do though the blinds would be the better option.

After that I'd budget for some finishing touches to warm the room up and make it more personal as that is missing here. So depends on your taste and personality. I would have green plants (fake and real), a large decorative headboard or artwork above bed, pretty things on dresser.

If your wardrobe is then in front of your bed you could try to hide the tv in it if you have space.

PickAChew · 17/02/2021 10:16

More grown up wallpaper would change it immensely.

manyhorror · 17/02/2021 10:21

Sorry I meant a large potted plant where the current bedside table is

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/02/2021 10:25

I agree with scrape off wallpaper and just paint the room a nice neutral colour.

Have the mirrored wardrobe face the window, this will make the room brighter and seem bigger instantly.

I’d take the TV out of the bedroom entirely. Sell it on Gumtree and buy a Fire HD pad (very cheap off Amazon) to stream TV shows while in bed.

I agree you don’t want floor length curtains as it would affect the heat from the radiator.

I’d get rid of the dressing table & mirror. Sell it. Then put tall dresser where it was.

I’d get warm colour, cosy bedding and new curtains to match.

BuddhaAtSea · 17/02/2021 10:36

I use my bedroom as a retreat from the world, it’s such a personal/intimate space, it’s hard to advise not knowing you and what you like, your life style.

I was lucky/unlucky enough to have to start from scratch with mine, post divorce.
I don’t have a tv in the bedroom, but that’s because I have almost a home cinema in the living room and I have full control over the remote 😂.
I do have a portable Bluetooth speaker though, and I use the iPad in bed. Can you hang the TV on the wall?

I have plain white walls. I know for most people that’s boring, but I’ve figured I need a calm space. I hate wallpaper with a vengeance, if I moved in your house, that would have been the first thing to go.
Also, because your woodwork is natural, I think your cream walls make the room darker? So so would go with a lighter paint. The room is big, but you have large furniture too, so anything that can make it seem airy would work.

I have a simple but really solid wood bed frame, painted white. My DD had a metal frame bed and it squeaked something awful. I think the frame in your room is slightly too imposing. As and when and if you think of changing it, perhaps look at a frame without a foot board? is that what it’s called, no idea! I think it would allow a bit more flow to the room.

Would you use/like a couple of lamps on the nightstand? I have two black ones, nothing special, Sainsbury’s, but I can angle them for when I read in bed.

Although my house is strewn with soft toys, they belong to the dog, I’m forever picking them up and shoving them back in her toy box. I wouldn’t leave them on display though. What I do have is a large ceramic artichoke (it’s a candle holder), it lives on the windowsill. Try finding an ornament that you love, be it a candle holder, a potted plant etc. I have a huge one on the chest of drawers.

You don’t have any art on the walls that I can see, sorry if I missed it. The first thing I see when I wake up is a large seascape my friend painted for me. Do you have art trails where you are? Google it (the art trail). You can pick up art quite cheaply.

Not sure about the wardrobe/chest of drawers, I would probably try and find a chest that’s not as tall.

I do have dressing table envy though, so cool, I so wish I had one!!!

Radiators are a pain the the neck, there isn’t a good place for them anywhere. Do you use yours? I don’t. If it doesn’t bother you, put the bed there, I would get too hot. Just experiment, see what works for you.

I don’t have curtains, I’ve got shutters, but that’s mainly because I am rubbish at choosing colours/patterns.

Hope that helps.

CovidCakeConundrum · 17/02/2021 10:42

You need a nice plant. Get rid of the awful wallpaper and the lilac/silver bed combo- its a bit 00s preteen/ old ladyish.
Put bears in a wicker basket or something if you need to keep them.
Turn bed around, get long curtains. It just needs to be a bit more sophisticated.
Wardrobes are good and should go with anything, room looks a nice size 👌

CovidCakeConundrum · 17/02/2021 10:43

Also what about some sort of cupboard if you need a TV?. To hide it. Tvs are quite ugly and do look particularly naff at the bottom of a bed.

parietal · 17/02/2021 10:48

is the wardrobe IKEA pax? If so, can you split it in half & get new doors? then you could put one half where the dressing table is (out of the way) and keep the other half in the current location. that would give space to move the bed towards the centre of the room with two proper bedside tables with lamps. and then the dresser wouldn't feel so squished into the corner.

i'd also repaint all the walls in one colour and get two nice bedside rugs in a similar colour

fruitbrewhaha · 17/02/2021 11:12

It does look like a childrens bedroom.

If the teddies are going in the loft, get rid of them completely.

If you were thinking of changing the bedframe, buy one that doesn't have a foot board (height at the bottom) as it makes the bed feel bigger then it is.

The wallpaper should go. Also the silver grey on the curtains and bed. Use a colour.

What colours or looks do you like. There's a lot of boho earthy tomes in fashion at the moment, or pale blue and off white is always a classic, but careful to pick the right blue or it looks cold or like a little boys bedroom.

Proudboomer · 17/02/2021 12:02

Can you move the room around so that you don’t have the waldrobe next to the bed and just have the bed and a bedside cabinet either side of the bed. Looks a bit strange with only on cabinet and a huge waldrobe next to the bed.

Oddbutnotodd · 17/02/2021 12:11

Agree the teddies should just go. I’d paint all the woodwork and walls. Change the curtains to full length. The bed then would blend into the room.

Grognonne · 17/02/2021 13:23

I agree with painting the woodwork. As it’s a newish house it makes it look a bit unfinished. If you paint the same colour as the walls it will make it look bigger.

dudsville · 17/02/2021 13:26

I centre the bed on a wall and get rid of the wardrobe and chest of drawers and replace with one unit that serves both functions.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/02/2021 18:30

It's quite a small room for all the furniture and the positioning of the doors make it difficult to arrange the furniture in a way that works, suspect the best but £££solution would be to get fitted wardrobes on the same wall as the door to the ensuite that used all the space and then just having the bed and bedside tables.

Since we're not in fantasy world though I agree with PPs the quickest win is to get rid of the toys, wallpaper and TV. Store the stuff currently under the dressing table in the wardrobe or in an attractive basket under the bed. I like your bed and bedding, it's the thing I like most in the room. I think if you paint the walls to go with the curtains and bed the room will immediately feel more cohesive and that's the cheapest way to see an improvement. I'd also have a sort through of all your possessions and get rid of what you don't need. That will give you a better idea of what furniture you really need.

With the current furniture I'm assuming you've already tried them in different positions and this arrangement works best? Without the dimensions of the furniture and space it's difficult to advise on a better arrangement. Are you very attached to the furniture or are you happy to sell and look for alternatives that fit this room? The dressing table is very fancy, and doesn't go with the modern wardrobe. If you love it then get a nice stool to go with it. I can't work out of the dressing table, chest of drawers are a set or not? Are they old and solid wood and worth painting or are they cheapo MDF? I have no sense of your taste from this room at all.

CherryBlossomTree7 · 17/02/2021 18:35

What I would change are the wallpaper, chest of drawers with the tele and the teddies. There are some really nice features in your room: the door, the carpet, the bed, the dressing table. The teddies let the nice features down. Definitely put those out of sight.

Wallpaper-wise, I would go for something neutral with texture. Next used to do stunning textured wallpaper.

The chest of drawers is nice but the tele on top looks clunky. I would have a tele mounted on the wall.
