Pink bedroom

My son is four. He loves pink and wants a pink bedroom.

I'm happy to do this with soft furnishings but not painted pink as I hate decorating and if he dislikes it in a year, I'll begrudge having to repaint!

How would you incorporate it so it still looks like a boys room, not like he's living in his sister's bedroom?

This is going to go well 🍿

sapnupuas · 29/01/2021 18:02

Really? Oh shit. Why???

I double checked I hadn't posted in AIBU by accident then.

Pink is just a colour

marshmallowfluffy · 29/01/2021 18:06

The problem is that you think a pink bedroom won't look "boyish " where as a boy who loves pink is just going to see his bedroom. You're overthinking this.

sapnupuas · 29/01/2021 18:09

I'm aware. It's just to save me having to change everything if he has a new favourite colour as he gets older.

If he wanted black, I wouldn't do a fully black bedroom. Nor would I do orange, green, etc.

I also don't want it to look tacky pink so was asking which colour would work with it.

I was thinking navy.

I'll reword my question.

How can I incorporate pink so it doesn't look like Barbie's Dream House, but also doesn't look too grown up?

I mean, the attached it nice but it doesn't look like the bedroom of a child.

I understand why you wouldn't do black but navy isn't far off on the colour chart?
Would you not go for orange and green because they clash with pink or because you don't like the colours?

My teen dd has a grey/pink room which is a pretty calming combination. Think this kind of vibe

No, I mean if he asked for his entire room to be black, orange, green etc, I wouldn't. It's got nothing to do with "pink being for girls" why I've said no to the entire room being pink. I was just using it as an example.

I'm thinking white, or off-white walls.

That room is really nice but again it is really grown up for a four year old. Though, I've just shown him a different pink and grey room and he said yes (I'm so over grey, though!).

Could you do a pink feature wall? X

marshmallowfluffy · 29/01/2021 18:29

I know what you mean about the grey.
This bedroom is navy but maintains the child room vibe because of the bed and accessories

Soft furnishings, nice textures, funky framed pictures. Not on the high street decals etc

sapnupuas · 29/01/2021 18:35

I'm not a massive fan of feature walls or decals.

He'd love fairy lights, though! I wonder if they're on the website.

I also fully confess that I want it to look like it should be on Instagram. I want my entire house to look Insta-ready. I know, that's pathetic. I know. I know.

Sage is a nice subtle colour that would look nice with some pink accents (Cromarty from Farrow & Ball is stunning). Equally an off white or a grey white would look nice. Both colours will last him years and you can mix things up when he undoubtedly becomes obsessed with the next colour.

If he really loves pink and you're not willing to paint the walls, get him all pink bedding. Inexpensive and easy to change (plus I'm sure he'd love getting tucked into a pink bed at bedtime!)

NerdyBird · 29/01/2021 18:36

Do a feature wall, or maybe hang fabric in the appropriate colour?
Or do that masking tape thing that's been popular and use other colours along with pink.

ApolloandDaphne · 29/01/2021 18:40

Pink and green is great. Give it a tropical forest vibe.

waitingforadulthood · 29/01/2021 18:42

Surely if you don't want to paint, then furnishings is your best option? Fluffy pink rug, pink bedsheets, throw and scatter cushions (in differing textures and shades) a canvas? Curtains, lamps and fairy lights. If you furnish a room and he changes his mind you can sell a set on for about 50% of the cost, so not completely out of pocket.

milienhaus · 29/01/2021 18:44

I really like this look (from Pinterest) and it could work for a boy definitely!

This also came up when I searched which would be lovely: desenio.co.uk/en/alphabet-animals-1-30x40?gclid=CjwKCAiAgc-ABhA7EiwAjev-j_39dMIgRwOq_9ZvRw9uJY_DwTR2Ynvz3lKLenqpzVBUvN9oqBQQyBoCdboQAvD_BwE

I'm currently decorating DDs room similar to this but with a blush pink, burnt orange and dark green.

Do a pink feature wall and cerise pink curtains, rug etc. I dyed some plain ikea ones when I wanted a deep pink.

sapnupuas · 29/01/2021 18:49

Now we are on to something!

I wanted ideas for a colour that could break up the pink so it's not pink-overload, but also look suitable for a four year old boy. Not because he's a boy, but because he's only young and I don't want it too grown up for him.

I love Cromarty and I love that photo posted above.

Thank you.

Everything white or dreaded grey then pink curtains bedding rug and a few bit of random tat that are pink .
I'd go for fuchsia pink not wishy washy pale pink

CatRatSplat · 29/01/2021 18:52

My DD is pink made, her walls are 25% pink and the rest are silver. She has wooden furniture, and everything else including 2 rugs, cushions, lamp, lampshade, curtains and other accessories are pink. Works well and could be easily changed except the wall in the future.

HeyMicky · 29/01/2021 18:59

I'd do a very bright pink, not pale, with a bright clear blue and maybe some bright orange accents also. This kind of blue

Thank you all for the suggestions, especially as he's not going for any of mine!

I'm so glad this went well and didn't turn into something I didn't intend. Thank you.
