Who isn't a teenage goth?
I like the look of the matt black feature walls that's all over Instagram atm, but haven't seen one in real life.
I have a black fireplace so I'm not sure it would look ok.

I'm thinking dark blue might be better..

It takes a lot of prep as it shows up all the imperfections on your wall. So. Much. Sanding.

Not a teenage goth (anymore) but yes - and I regret nothing! Not willing to share photos as would be outing but it makes me happy every day. Definitely agree re showing flaws so you do need to prep and you also need to break it up if a large wall (pictures etc) but no more so than any other dark colour.

Oh bollocks my walls aren't great, though they are mostly covered in tat.

I did in a previous house but I would also say as well as showing up bad walls in the first place they also mark very easily.

I had to get rid of them in the end as every time I so much as brushed past them they left a chalky mark. I used a flat matt paint though so maybe that was the problem.

Im only going walls that we wouldn't be touching so to speak, its the walls behind the tv and fireplace. I might sand them done a bit and decide. There's probably 8 coats of different paint on them Blush

I was a teenage goth, but also painted a wall almost black as an adult (once a goth..) and yeah, agree with the PP. Shows up all the flaws, and it really makes the room feel smaller, even as a feature wall. So think carefully about the space you want to use it in.

Personally I wouldn't do it again, other dark colours definitely, but not black.

For one wall - do it!!!

Crown rebel is decent

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 01/02/2021 08:03

I did it. Victorian property, in my dining room. I did the whole room including ceiling, coving and ceiling rose. I bloody love it.

Savoretti · 01/02/2021 08:05

We have a charcoal grey kitchen and I love it

AlwaysLatte · 01/02/2021 08:07

Black seems a bit extreme... we're in the process of painting our snug a very dark blue which is brave for us, but it's literally just a place to sit and watch television/have somewhere quiet to go. I suppose it does depend what the room is used for.

Highfalutinlootin · 01/02/2021 08:09

I did it for an accent wall in my dining room and it looks amazing! No need to sand or do anything like that beforehand, we certainly didn't. Nearly black teal and nearly black navy are also pretty popular now if you don't want to go totally black.

FTEngineerM · 01/02/2021 08:10

We have deep pacific in our living room and bloody love it. It does mark easy and by the light switch always looks grubby but the other wall has shelves and tv and it never gets marked.

Do it!
When DH and I bought our first house we made our black bedroom with mirrors. Black bedding, black furniture and black curtains. It was great. It was a nicely built newbuild so the walls looked OK.

I am not keen on feature walls, but it is your house and clearly fancy it. :) It'll be a nice lockdown project.

Following with interest.....we’re considering a black ceiling for the second bedroom which will be DP’s day sleeping room for night shifts/gaming room/cave. Textured anaglypta paper ceiling, very high.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 01/02/2021 14:52

Black is great for a bedroom as it helps make it dark and cosy.

I’m doing my bedroom next with black walls and a muted light teal ceiling.

LemonViolet · 01/02/2021 15:55

Love the sound of that @Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree although my thoughts would be not too muted on the teal, it will need a certain degree of brightness/clarity or it might look too grey next to black, could still be a light shade of teal though. We’re choosing a teal at the moment and a lot of shades come up too grey for me in artificial light/darker corners that will only be accentuated next to black. Could go more muted on accent tones in soft furnishings like rose/lavender.... sounds really lovely actually.

Cocolapew · 01/02/2021 16:30

I still haven't decided Hmm
I did my bedroom very dark green and love it.

I'm thinking dark blue might be better..

F&B's railings is an almost black navy blue but isn't as harsh as pure black.

desperatehousewife21 · 01/02/2021 16:57

Yes me! I love black and not just cos it’s ‘on trend’ all over insta atm Hmm
I’m in the process of painting most of the house black with areas of animal print/ monochrome wallpaper.
It’s made the front room super cosy I love it! I can’t imagine wanting anything else. I used Lick paint in black 02.

Has anyone painted their walls black?

We just painted our hallway black. It looks better than before (pinkish white, don't know why the old owners did that) - we primed first because I had done some paint samples on the wall, then painted very very very charcoal grey/black. It's the same colour as our bedroom, which has white and grey bedding and dark grey accents. Really pops against the white woodwork (small Edwardian terrace). We are also painting our living room the same colour although it's already dark, just fancy it darker!

Works in hallways/small rooms especially because they can look depressing if you try and bring brightness in... the hallway just looked dirty before. We have an old manky carpet we need to replace but the black paint instantly made it look neater! We are putting framed posters up the stairs so there will be lots of colour.
